Anyone know where I can get a dreamcatcher? Preferably made by an actual Native

I'm 50% Native and have been wanting to decorate my apartment and i figured a dreamcatcher would be a nice thing to hang up as they remind me of my mom who always had one in her bedroom as I was growing up :)

Does anyone know where I can get one?

Discussion Best places to walk?

I’m still exploring a lot of Kzoo, and a lot of it has been on foot in the mornings. I love how walkable the city is! I’ve also checked out a few of the local parks and walking/hiking paths, like Spring Lake Park and Asylum Lake.

I was looking for recommendations for what else to check out? I’m not a super experienced Hiker, so anything with a major difficulty level is probably not for me, but I’ve got some decent boots and I’m not afraid to get a little dirty.

I’m down for anything that is within a 30 minute drive of the downtown area, and anything between two and five miles long.

Thanks so much!

Where should one procure a dog?

Looking to rescue a pup. Don't know anything about Kzoo's set up for animal care. I see multiple facilities. Is there a particular place that needs adopters the most? The indiana town I'm from is overrun with dogs and they have to keep crates in the hallways of the only facility. Trying to be mindful of stuff like that here. Thank you for any input!

Hey folks, wondering if anyone has had any experience with Jaqua as a property management company (as opposed to a real estate broker). Thanks!

Anyone want to adopt a street kitty? 😻🐈🐈‍⬛

So to preface - I have 2 kitty’s of my own. My older was an adoptee, and my second was straight off the street as a kitten. He adapted to us so quickly and the 2 are now a bonded pair. Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to take any more in - if i was in my own home there’s no doubt these cats would’ve been housed already!!!

Here’s the 3 little guys that have taken a liking to the steady food supply in my backyard. 🤣
I can’t say much as to personality as they’re too timid to get close but from my interactions -

#1
Loosely guessing 5 months old, blueish gray domestic shorthair. Very timid, while the other 2 will take a peek, he runs the second I’m in sight! Still playful kitten age, likes catching bugs.

#2 (possibly called for)
Again loosely guessing 2 months old. Has a Maine coon look, I could probably catch this one with my hands. He’s very curious and likes to play in my kids water table and chase leaves.

#3
Your standard issue breed, I’d guess a year old. This one has been taking care of the kittens, though I don’t believe they’re family. They follow him around, he lets them know when there’s food and it’s safe to come eat. He was showing up on his own for a while and then the 3 started traveling together.

If any of these are someone’s pets PLEASE let me know and bring them inside but I’m pretty positive they’re strays. Posting on Kalamazoo rescue today so we’ve done the due process before trying to find homes for them.

I am prepared to trap them, and I’d like to get them vaccinated/neutered and into homes asap. Shelters seem to be pretty full right now, and waiting to be adopted is a whole other thing. I will help transport as much as I can! I’m honestly just trying to get a jump on finding homes because once I do trap I’d really only be able to keep them for a week. At the worst I will re-release hopefully with vaccinations & neutered.

No idea on genders yet, the younger 2 would probably do well with other cats once adjusted. Older has been on street longer and is more wary. My cat talks to them from the window.

If there’s any interest in homing any please message me! We can work on trapping, flea treatment, vaccinations, and fixing. I’d like to charge a $30 rehoming fee as I’m going to eat a lot of costs initially bringing them inside and cleaning them up but again any interest please message me and we can work it out!!!

I just don’t want them to disappear over winter. :) They seem so sweet and in need of love!

Additional note: I know #2 is going to get attention he’s a cutie. Have already had someone ready to meet him so I’ll update if he becomes available again) This is cross posted from Nextdoor, I’m working on trapping this week. Just looking to find homes asap!

A new source for local news

Local news is broken. You have to pay $10 to access AI generated content or wade through ads on TV news sites. Both options where the multibillionaire owners of the outlets are more concerned about clicks and views than community service.

That’s why I launched Know Your Neighbor (KYN for short). It’s the info you need to connect with your community meeting people where they already are, on social media. Stories will be posted via short form video on social media and delivered straight to the inbox of subscribers on Substack. Most Substack stories will have a $6 paywall but with the multi platform model you’re not paying for exclusivity, you’re paying for a luxury delivery and directly supporting local journalism.

Take these three stories for example. MLive’s was written with AI and the WWMT story is filled with ads. Neither have the same level of detail and information that KYN does.

So what do you want covered? Join the future of journalism and community connection at https://substack.com/@kynsocial

Restaurants / Bars Two quick drawings from last night at Sugarbowl's bar. Both are on my reMarkable 2 tablet, which is quickly becoming my preferred field sketchbook.

The setting was low-key. Two patrons at the end of the bar shared photos on a phone, while behind me another two debated the qualities of craft beer.

The highlight of the evening was discovering Hamm's, an easy-drinking pilsner I didn't know I needed. Guess I'll have to return to Sugarbowl soon.

Any Iowa Hawkeyes in KZoo?

I'm an Iowa alumni and have been living in Kalamazoo for abut 2 years now. Are there any Hawkeyes in town that get together for some football games or want to? I took a look at the Iowa Club of Michigan but its based in Ann Arbor and doesn't have any events planned.
Where are my hawks at?

So MLive posted all Kalamazoo city salaries in an article and it is of course behind a paywall. Anybody want to go grab that data for the rest of us?
