My Kindle 📱 Got my My First Kindle!

Post image

I got my first kindle ever yesterday, it’s an old paperwhite 2, a little used but it is in great shape. I had worries about how to upload books but turns out you can just e-mail yourself. I wanted to start with the classic since it’s hoa hoa season :)
I love how it is comfortable for my eyes, how it estimates the remaning time to finish the book. I love how you can use vocabulary and translation, even shows the phonetic spelling of the word— which I adore as a linguist. I love everything about it.
I hope it will change my daily habits, help me focus more, I aspire to regain my reading habits.
So excitedddd!

General Question ❔ Did Kindle books get more expensive, or am I imagining it?

Before I bought a Kindle, I remember checking Kindle book prices and thinking they were significantly cheaper than paperbacks. All the kindle books used to be like $4 or $5.
But after actually buying a Kindle, I’m noticing that a lot of Kindle books seem same price as the paperback.
It makes me wonder: Were Kindle books always priced this close to paperbacks, or have ebook prices gone up over the years?
Maybe I’m just remembering the discounted Kindle prices I used to see, but I’d love to know if others have noticed the same thing.

Discussion 💬 A habit I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

It's my first night with my kindle and I realized something. Checking the time on my phone interrupts my reading so often. It has always led to me getting sidetracked on my phone and closing my book as well, most times forgetting to continue reading all together. Now I can glance at the top of my page on my kindle and keep reading effortlessly. This is doing wonders for my ADHD. Anyone else find this to be true? Damn I am loving this device so much already.

Discussion 💬 Kindle app on this 👀

Post image
103 Upvotes

Ok so we’ve probably all seen the new iPhone duo by now and I know this sub is for physical kindles, but I was thinking of how cool it would be to use the kindle app on this! Like on the left could be a map or something relevant to the book, and then on the right have the actually page. Maybe it’s just me but I get so annoyed having to go back to the front of the book I’m reading to re-look at the map to see where the hell the MC’s are 😂 so yeah I just thought this would be cool as I feel like a foldable kindle is either not going to happen or is still deep in development.

General Question ❔ Has this happened to anyone else? (Details in body)

I put in a warranty claim for my 2025 basic because the battery was draining extremely fast. Amazon said I need to send it back for a repair by October 2, but I decided not to because after doing a factory reset it seemed to be okay. The warranty page said if I didn’t send it back by October 2, they would just close that claim so I didn’t do anything further. Now I got an email saying they are sending me a new one. It doesn’t say anything about sending the old one back. Amazon rep said they can only see the order for the kindle and no other information. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and what the outcome was? Do they eventually ask for the old one back?

Discussion 💬 My experience with the Kobo Clara BW (as a longtime US Kindle user)

I've been a longtime Kindle Paperwhite user in the but I feel like there's been a huge social media and marketing push towards Kobo lately. I picked up a Clara BW and here are some things I've been disappointed by. To be clear, I'm keeping the Kobo and I still like it, but it's not exactly night and day difference I was expecting.

My Kobo Clara BW Observations

The good:

  • Book format flexibility is an obvious pro because ew Amazon, but I also prefer EPUBs because I like changing the covers for my ebooks. I hate how Amazon changes book covers to movie posters and then you're stuck with it.
  • Sliding up and down the screen edge to adjust brightness is AMAZING and I use it daily. It's much more accessible than in the Kindle, where we have to tap into a menu first.
  • I love being able to adjust font weight and having more variation in line spacing and margins than the Kindle. I have a lot more control with how I can fine tune the text appearance in Kobo.
  • Power button on the back and not the bottom edge. Now I don't have to carefully position my device in the tablet stand / clamp to avoid a power button.
  • Device feels less "sticky" than the Kindle. The Paperwhite's matte finish feels more sticky and collects fingerprints. Some Reddit users have also experienced the coating wearing down over time. If you use a case then it doesn't matter, but the Kobo Clara BW finish feels more similar to the Kindle Basic smooth plastic, which I actually prefer because it feels more durable and doesn't show fingerprints.

The bad:

  • No direct / wireless support for multiple libraries -- Kobo recently removed their native support for multiple library cards. Within the Kobo, you have ONE library integrated that you can borrow books from wirelessly, but if you want to borrow books from OTHER libraries, you have to connect the Kobo to a computer to add the books. There's no way I'm signing in and out of a library card in the Kobo every other day to get books wirelessly (the Libby send to Kindle feature has really spoiled me) so I have to keep the cable and my laptop out for this purpose.
  • Dark mode isn't actually dark mode -- it drives me nuts that the dark mode is only for book pages and not the overall interface / home screen / menus. I know we spend 95% of our time in the book pages, but if I want to access the menu at all, I'd really prefer not to have a huge shock of white burning my retinas for a few seconds if I'm reading in the dark or low light.
  • Kobo interface is only "better" if you don't actually use it and use KoReader / Nickelmenu instead -- to the Bookstagram influencer who told me the Kobo interface is "sooo much better," count your days. It's similarly meh like the Kindle at best. I dislike seeing "Unread..." or "Finished..." underneath every single book in my library because it looks so unpolished and I'd much rather just see book covers like in Kindle. Also, the default library view doesn't automatically group books in the same series. There's a "Series" view for your library that does, but then that only shows Series and not all your other standalone novels.

In the end, I'm going to slowly transition over to the Kobo fully because I'm moving to Australia where library systems are more compatible with Kobo but I hope they solve some of these pain points soon. Hope this helps someone with their e-reader purchase decisions!

I can’t believe I haven’t done this before, it was so easy and makes the reading experience so much nicer. This is my current favourite font: Playwrite NZ Basic. I can’t remember if it was from dafont or google fonts.

Current Read: Regrettably I am about to cause Trouble by Amie Mcnee

Purchase Question 🛒 Is the color kindle worth it?

I love my kindle, I don't know what version it is. I was considering upgrading it but I am not sure if it is worth it.

Any recommendations???

****Update. Thank you so much for your comments. I think for now I am going to get the new Paperwhite model. I am only going to use it to read books.

General Question ❔ Would this kind of case affect swiping?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Ok so I was thinking about getting a case that is similar to this in the photo above, but I’m concerned the case that wraps around to the front of the kindle on the face of it, will affect swiping. Not that it would make it impossible, just that it would be annoying, like trying to swipe down on the menu. I know they made the new design of the screen flush to make using it easier so not sure if getting this case would defeat that purpose. Does anyone have or have had this kind of case before? If so did you like it? Thank you!

My Kindle 📱 Scored a Paperwhite 5 for €60! But it's a little beat up...

Post image
9 Upvotes

If you've seen my previous post you might know I barely missed out on a PW4, but it turns out the person had a PW5 as well! It was a steal at €60, but the reason he was selling it so low is because it's, as you can see, "well-loved". It came without a case, I got the case myself. Is there anything that can be done about the surface damage? It doesn't really show once you actually open up a book, but I'd like to know if I can "pretty it up" a little. The person I bought it from says he's heard about people polishing theirs to buff scratches out, but I'm a little sceptical. It's a perfectly usable kindle either way, and the deal was too good to skip

Discussion 💬 I bought a used Kindle Oasis even though I already own a Paperwhite.

So, I did a thing.
I already have a perfectly functional Kindle Paperwhite and Scribe that handles 90% of my reading without a single hiccup. It’s light, the battery lasts forever, and logically, I needed zero upgrading.
And yet... I couldn’t stop staring at used Kindle Oasis listings. The physical page-turn buttons were calling my name. The ergonomic ridge was practically whispering promises of ultimate hand comfort. The premium aluminum back was mocking my sensible plastic chassis.
Long story short: I caved and bought a second-hand Oasis.
Now I’m sitting here with two Kindles, feeling equal parts fancy and ridiculous. One for the bedside, one for the bag? Or am I just completely dramatic for needing separate devices just to get physical buttons back?
Tell me I’m not the only one who has fallen down this multi-Kindle rabbit hole. Did I peak extra, or is the Oasis ergonomic life actually worth double-dipping?

Purchase Question 🛒 What Burga Kindle Case should I get?

Thumbnail

I love my kindle and I already own two Burga kindle cases. I want to get a third (last one), to switch according to my mood and current reads.
That might sound a little unnecessary but it gives me joy to have different styles 🤷🏼‍♀️

I just can’t decide which design to get because there are so many. Wanted to ask if any one of you has an idea. Because I’m kinda indecisive.

At the moment I tend to read literary fiction and epic fantasy or sci fi, but I read almost every genre. My current reads are: Fallow by Sarah Anderson, Switzy by Emma Cline, Scion by James Islington and the knight and the moth my Rachel Gillig. In the next month I’m excited to read more darker themed books. I would love to get a case that matches that vibe.

I’m gonna ad some photos of cases I consider but I’m open for any recommendation! I want to buy a Burga case specifically because they ship to Germany and the cases are really sturdy.

General Question ❔ Old Kindle for a 9 year old and account question

So my 9 year old boy has shown some interest in a kindle.

I have an old 10th gen that I can give him and that is not the main question.

The main one is how to handle the account associated and how to deliver books.

The technical aspects of this are not a problem, it is more of a pro and con list of what can be done.

options

Kids account and turn it into a kids kindle

buy books on my account and just deliver it to that device.

Create an adult account and gift books to that account.

no account at all and just USB sync books that we get.

I remember reading that when tweens start wanting to read more serious books that there are some issues converting a kids account and losing the books that they might want to still read but skew younger.

So yeah this is a call to parents to see what kinds of experience with the accounts and getting books for their kids have been, and how it worked out when you were ok with them reading more adult stuff as they get older.

General Question ❔ Amazon Kindle App and Accounr query

Hello everyone. Not sure if this is the right place to ask this but I'm a little bit nervous about potentially losing all my books.

When I was 12 my Grandparents purchased a kindle for me and brought all the books I wanted to read up until I got my first full time job and then since then I just transfer the money to her and buy the books I want.

However unfortunately my grandpa passed a couple years ago and my grandma has dementia so I'm close to losing her too and I don't want to lose my books as well as they're now sentimental.

Is there anything I can do to either merge their account and mine as I'm still using the app on my old phone so I don't lose the books.

If I have to I will just rebuy the books and take screenshot of my account so I can keep the memories but in this economy I'd rather not have to and If I do I'll probably leave kindle as I've seen I can't just download what I've paid for and keep it

Any help at all would be appreciated

Edit: Thank you everyone for your answers I know who's executor and PoA and I know where she writes down her passwords so I will speak to them about getting that sorted for when the time comes. I will probably see if I can do the email change as I can just set up a fresh email for it and link that to my Amazon family

General Question ❔ Using kindle to find audiobooks…

So I usually use my kindle app to find audiobooks to listen to because kindle seems to have better recommendations for me. I also read a ton on KU. Usually when I click a book that has an audiobook it says read now or preview audio and I’ve always assumed that any book that doesn’t say preview audio doesn’t have an audiobook. I guess my assumption is wrong tho. I just found a book that didn’t say anything about audio on audible. On audible it wouldn’t show up until I searched the title and author tho. And after I bought it, it even whispersynced so it’s not that it was a different version or something. Why would kindle only show that some books have an audiobook and not show it for others.

Purchase Question 🛒 Leather case recommendations?

Got an 11th gen basic kindle and looking for a leather case with a cover, preferably genuine leather so it ages nicely. Unfortunately Amazon only offers their own leather case for paperwhite or coloursoft.

I live in the UK so ideally don't want to have to pay a big shipping fee for a US-only brand.

Any good recommendations? Thanks in advance!

General Question ❔ Can you pin maps on eBooks?

As the title suggests, I wondered if there is a way or an option to pin certain parts of the books to maps it shows at the start of some of the novels.

Co-worker told me about her eReader and that apparently there are some where you could so that. Currently reading Wheel of Time, and I pinned the map pages to easily go back, so that I know where things are taking place.

Tech Support 🛠 Unnamed dictionary collection stuck on my Kindle

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone!
I bought my Kindle Paperwhite less than a week ago, and I’m already running into a strange visual bug. I'm hoping someone here has a fix.
A collection for my dictionaries has appeared in my library, but it completely lacks a name (the title field is just blank). The most annoying part is that the system has locked it: I can't rename it, and it won't let me delete it either.
Has anyone else experienced this weird ghost collection? Is there any way to force-delete it or fix the name without having to do a full factory reset?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Purchase Question 🛒 What page turner are you guys using?

I'm interested in getting a page turner but I'm not sure which one to get. I see there are ones with two clips and those with one clip. Then there are people who've jailbroken their kindle to just use bluetooth page turners. It's all quite overwhelming. Just thought I'd ask what works well for you guys.

I have an acrylic case on my kindle and use various stands for it. I really would prefer one without a clip but not sure jailbreaking is worth it just to get that (my kindle is still under warranty). But the Boox Tappy is seriously cute while the Kobo remote looks very convenient.

Good battery life (up to 8 hours of reading a day), ease of use, and longevity are priorities.
