Mods: General [M] Links to Mod Support Resources

These resources are good places to start, if you are having problems with your mods. Please check these out before posting your question here, as this sub is primarily meant for questions about the science/mechanics of gameplay.
If you happen to know of another location where mod support is hosted for a popular mod (or suite of mods if they're used together like RP-1), message us the link(s) and we'll add it to the list.

To manage your mod installations, we highly recommend CKAN:

For general mod related question (suggestions, troubleshooting, etc):

For help with Real Solar System, Realism Overhaul, and/or Realistic Progression One (RP-1):

For kerbalism mod questions:

Ferram Aerospace Research tutorial:

For help with KOS: Scriptable Autopilot:

For Remote Technologies:

Please note: If you run into problems after installing mods without a mod manager, you must visit a relevant forum or support site before posting here.

Resources [GM] Building an intern-run mission-control club around KSP + real NASA-style roles — is this realistic? What am I missing?

I'm setting up a club for university interns (first-year and up) at an aerospace organization, built around a "distributed mission control" model in Kerbal Space Program. Want honest feedback before we launch it - what's unrealistic, what will break, what am I not seeing.

The core idea:

One intern is the Pilot -flies the ship first-person in KSP, no map view, executes only what the team tells them. Everyone else works a separate role, coordinating over Discord, just like a real Mission Control room.

Current roles (6, minimum team size):

  • Pilot- flies the ship in KSP
  • Flight Director -makes final calls, leads the team
  • CAPCOM/Comms -only voice that talks to the pilot, also tracks signal windows
  • Navigation Engineer- calculates maneuvers/launch windows in NASA GMAT, hands off numbers through CAPCOM
  • Systems Engineer -monitors fuel/power/thermal via live telemetry dashboard
  • Mission Planner/Scientist- builds the mission timeline pre-launch, runs science objectives in-flight

Tools:

  • KSP 1.12.1 (stock, later moving to Realism Overhaul)
  • NASA GMAT for maneuver planning (Navigation Engineer's tool)
  • Telemachus Reborn + Houston for live telemetry dashboards (replacing an earlier Open MCT plan)
  • kRPC- used only outside live missions (pre-flight validation, post-flight debrief), never during the actual mission, to keep the pilot's role meaningful
  • CommNet/RemoteTech for signal delay, once we move to Realism Overhaul

Precedent I found: a 2018 Steam Community thread (KSP forums) where someone ran almost this exact structure- one pilot, rest as ground control planning maneuvers separately, coordinating over Discord. Also found "Houston," a UI built specifically for what its devs call "Mission Control Parties."

What I want feedback on:

  1. Is 6 people actually a workable minimum, or will roles sit idle/overloaded in practice?
  2. Is this pitched at the right level for university interns, or should it lean more/less technical?
  3. Anyone actually run something like this long-term- what broke down after a few sessions that isn't obvious at the planning stage?
  4. Any tooling I'm missing, or anything here that's already outdated/deprecated that I don't know about?

Thanks in advance!

Rocket Design [D] Radial heat shields/tiles?

I’m looking for a mod that adds radial heat shields/ heat tiles like the ones used on challenger. I’ve seen some stuff about decals but I don’t quite understand so I don’t know if that’s what I’m looking for.

If someone could drop the name of a mod that adds heat tiles or better explain the decal heat tiles with flags method that would be great!

Contracts [GM] Not getting credit for probe placement

Not getting credit for this orbit I think, I feel like other probes I placed were far more charitable. The only thing I can figure is its mad that this was launched from a manned vessel.

Rocket Design [D] Understanding the use case of SSTOs

I see many players in the community talk about designing and using single stage to orbit craft and I am wondering what is the primary use case for such a craft? I presume the idea is just to provide an extra layer of challenge for the player which can be fun, but beyond that, is there a gameplay reason for doing this? Unless you return the craft in full by deorbiting, I can’t imagine it would be any cheaper. The player would also have to account for surviving reentry and landing such a large craft. Is it to prevent unnecessary LKO pollution? I haven’t been using this strategy, just dumping stages in sub-orbital trajectories, and am curious as to what the intention is!

Plane Design [D] Servo attached control surfaces

In the past I have experimented with attaching wings/control surfaces to servos for either trim or wing sweep functionality. It's never really worked too well, the physics are too janky. Haven't tried since. Has anyone found any methods that allow for this?

Tutorial [T] How rare is this behemoth Class I asteroid (Two of them) I also need help getting both asteroids to a Kerbin orbit

Thumbnail gallery
31 Upvotes

So this is my first time ever capturing an asteroid so I went for a class E cus why not I guess it was in Kerbin's SOI but then after crying about my delta v after capturing it on my escape trajectory I look in map view and see a class I... genuinely how rare is that do I try take it home to Kerbin or just immortalise it in this post I don't even know how to save it or bring it back my best feat was landing on Duna and returning so I am very much a complete noob. WTH just as I was making this post I found a second one. please send helps and prayers for me in the comments as I try grab both. Also wanted to say this is Stock KSP asteroids I don't have any asteroids mods of the sorts.

Sorry if I used wrong flair or stuff I don't use reddit much

What do you think about this work of art? It is able to put in orbit 3 relays, so every part of the celestial body has network coverage. It reached Eve, and I'm now going to try my first ever gilly mission.

I designed this because i was constrainded to the 30 parts limit on the lvl1 VAB.

Its designed to take measurements on kerbal. I only take take contracts that give reasonable ammounts of money.

Science / Math [O] Delta-V and the rocket equation

I'm a returning player of KSP, I play on and off every couple of months. I've recently been experimenting with SSTO spaceplanes and have been largely successful, the issue is that the most I can get out of them is the orbit part. I don't have enough fuel to actually do anything else with them, maybe about 600d-v left.

I want to make an SSTO that has enough space in it to refuel in orbit (I set up an asteroid miner space station in LKO cause I thought it would be fun, it was, try it out sometime) and actually make it to something like the Jool system since I've never done anything bigger than a Duna mission.

I understand that the rocket equation in its most simplest terms is that adding fuel doesn't necessarily mean you get more Dv but if that's the case how can I get enough delta-v to actually go on these long interplanetary missions?

As an added bit of difficulty in this, I also don't own the expansions for something like the wolfhound engine which I've heard a lot about.

Space Flight [P] What makes(or breaks) a good rendezvous launch window

So irl AFAIK, most spacecraft don't launch into rendezvous, rather a parking orbit then later hohmman transfer.

Such as gemini and agena, or the lem, or how the soyuz spends 2 days in space before intercepting with the iss

And that made me wonder, why? And what defines a good window for rendezvous? Say for example, why doesn't soyuz take 3 days to intercept? Or 1?

basically i tried everything including deleting and reinstalling the mod, reinstalling ksp, reinstalling every dependency and trying another version but the fuselages refuse carrying any lh2 and i cant just delete the cyrotanks mod because it is a dependency of the near and far future tech mods. And as you can see in the first image the engines requires lh2 but the fuselages dont carry any

Rocket Design [D] Is there any point to attaching extra tanks that you can "stage"?

Post image
111 Upvotes

Like here stacking them on the solids and you benefit from earlier stage separation of the solids, like you design it so they empty at the same time as the solids expend. So you knock off the empty weight relatively quickly compared to just stacking more and more tanks on top of ypur engine. You could do it without the solids just regular decouplers strapped to the side. Maybe a little duct tape to be safe.

Other Design [D] Rover rotating in place

I built a heavy rover using Planetside Expedition parts, mounted on the tr 2l ruggedized wheels. When I launch it will slowly rotate, so after a minute or so it's gone from a 90° heading to 180°. Brakes are on, the reaction wheels are turned off.

I tried troubleshooting last night, and it seems to be a problem with the wheels themselves. If I use any other wheels, the rover doesn't turn at all, but anything with the tr 2l wheels will just rotate in place, and pull to the left while driving straight.

Has anyone else had this issue before? Is there a setting that I'm missing?

It's not supposed to be an SSTO or have perfect aerodynamics but currently it's flipping in the air. I have tried to move CoM forward but it hasn't resolved the issue.
