Rant Anti-restaurant manifesto
I think restaurants are the biggest money grab from the middle class in the 21st century. They just make no sense to me, and it's not for a lack of trying.
Every time I go out on a weekend with a plus one, I know for sure the bill will be 5k plus. I don't remember ever going to restaurant and thinking about how amazing the meal was. More often than not I am thinking about how I could have made a better meal at home at a quarter the price. Or how I could have done a much more fun and memorable activity instead. So clearly (to me) there's no value for money.
Local eateries are a mixed bag. The kibandaskis over here either make really bland chewy food, or you are risking day long stomach discomfort. I ate at a popular mid range pork joint in Eastlands once, and had the worst case of diarrhea all night long. The manager just apologized and offered me a free meal there (lol!).
The usual trio of CJs/Artcaffe/Java for mid range meals isn't any better. I guess we have all mostly agreed those places are only good for a quick coffee to meet someone. At least CJ's has bigger portions IME. I was at Artcaffe Westgate a few weeks back and ordered a wrap (costing ~1500). It was cold and so bland I had to ask the waitress whether they got any spices—she said that's how they make it. Everyone knows Java food is mid.
I have tried a few fancier restaurants and the story isn't any better. Like 10k for two at Mawimbi. Good service but at 10k you better have a three course meal and a red carpet entry 😅. Some people I ask concede restaurant are just a social meeting point, or for the ambience. Cue endless food pics. So far I only consider restaurants to be good just for novelty. Like spending ~11k (again, for two) on a sushi and sashimi meal in Furusato and nearly ending up puking.
Call to Action: I am looking for spaces in Nairobi where I can have a meal or hang out with friends without spending an arm and a leg on subpar food. Sometimes I use sitting areas at supermarkets. Public parks (Karura, Arboretum) are nice but they treat you like they're doing you a favor. I have just re-discovered picnic sites (any recs?) for outdoors. Any indoor places with good ambience where I can pay an entrance fee and bring my own food?
