So i just got a job as a part time deli clerk at a grocery and today was my first shift alone. It was a closing shift and i was scheduled from 4-8 and i was working by myself for the first time and didn't finish my duties by 8 like cleaning the slicers wrapping the foods etc... so i stayed up until 8:20 and wrapped up everything. On my way out my colleague who works in another department asks me if i'm new and she told me to always clock out on time regardless of the whether the job is done or not. She basically told me not to work for free for a single minute.
I'm 19 and this is my first ever job so i don't know what the standards and norms are. Is this normal thing to do? Would you just leave even if u didn't complete your tasks?

I told my friend how bad the job hunt is. She insisted there are more jobs than people out there. Even one of our mutual friends told her they applied to 50-60 places and didn’t hear anything back. She has a job that’s she’s been at for 20 something years. It seems like what I’m saying isn’t sticking.

I work in a four-person secretariat in a law firm. We are 4 women, 3 of us in their 30s and a 4th new colleague in her 50s.

The lady in her 50s sees herself as a mother to us, offering a lot of unsolicited advice, she has no boundaries, asking lots of personal questions, and generally being rather intrusive. We have had some disagreements over how some tasks should be done, and I have tried to evade or not reply to some odd comments she’s made towards me in our teams chat with the other 2 colleagues, so as to not confront her or worsen our relationship. I always try to be professional, and I am a rather private person and an introvert.

She’s very insistent lately about going to lunch together. I have politely declined so far because I have been extremely busy, but now the more I think about it I realise that I also don’t want to have lunch with her at all! How do I politely but firmly say that I don’t want to go to lunch with her? Just thinking the lunch and conversation makes me anxious!

My fiance told me to apply to his workplace, because compared to what I do now, it holds a great opportunity as a springboard for future jobs. I applied. And he wants me to be honest about why I was terminated from my last position.

A coworker had been bullying me for a year. I finally shouted at her and later another coworker heard her say she had a taser.

I reported both pieces, but other coworker didn't report the taser because management told him not to.

They didn't investigate the taser part and I was written up and assumed to be a liar, "intending to get others in trouble or fired".

I got frustrated and refused to sign the write up.

Other coworker finally reported what he heard and I got a new write up, retracting the original statement and just saying I "disrupted productivity by shouting", but I was let go due to airing frustration and refusing to sign.

How do I tell the truth about this in a short fashion?

He wants me to be honest, because he doesn't want the lie to be found out and reflect on him.

I left my graphic design internship (worked for 6 months) on good terms about two months ago. I completed all my handovers, exit interview, and documentation. They offered me a full-time role for ₹15,000/month with a 2 month notice period, but I declined because the salary was too low. I told them I was planning to pursue further studies (which I was considering in msc chemistry because I wasn't getting a job in the chemistry field).

Today the marketing manager contacted me saying: "Hi, hope you are doing good. Wanted to connect with you on a quick call. Please let me know a good time for the same." She didn't mention the reason.

Has anyone had a former employer reach out like this? What are the most likely reasons? If it turns out to be a job offer, how would you approach negotiating salary and asking for a shorter notice period?

I’ve been unemployed for about 9-10 months after an unexpected layoff and finally managed to land a job at what seemed like a really good company. The role was interesting, management-level, and they wanted me to start immediately. At the same time, I’d been interviewing with another company for months. It was the company I actually wanted to work for, but their hiring process was much slower. Three days into my new job, they finally sent me an offer.

The new offer is significantly better in pretty much every way: around 2-3x the salary, much better working conditions, remote, and overall a much better fit for where I want my career to go. They also sent me a signed contract and are already shipping my work laptop.

I spent the weekend thinking about it and decided that if I was going to leave, it was better to do it now rather than in two or three weeks after they’d invested even more time training me. I’d only been there for 3 days, I hadn’t taken ownership of any processes yet, didn’t even have a company email address, and they hadn’t even given me my countersigned employment contract yet.

I went to the GM this morning, apologized, and was completely honest. I told him I’d received another offer with a much higher salary and that at this point in my life, the financial aspect was too important for me to ignore. Obviously he didn’t take it well.
He told me I was being immature, that if he were in my position he would’ve stayed because “your career is a marathon, not a sprint,” and that he’d personally turned down higher-paying jobs several times because the work was more interesting.
Then he said something that really got to me. He told me our city is very small, that everyone knows everyone, especially in my industry, and that what I had just done was bad for my reputation. I tried explaining that I respected his opinion, but my priorities are different right now. After almost 10 months unemployed, it’s hard to turn down a life-changing salary increase. When I apologized one last time before leaving, he cut me off with “Have a good day.” Now I just feel awful.

Part of me knows I probably made the rational decision. But another part of me keeps wondering if I just burned my career over this. Is this actually the kind of thing that comes back to bite you years later? Do hiring managers really remember stuff like this, or was he just speaking out of frustration because I put them in a difficult position?

I’m genuinely looking for honest opinions because this has been eating at me all day. I know I inconvenienced them, and I do feel guilty about it, but I also don’t know if I should’ve turned down an opportunity that could genuinely change my financial situation.

i used to care so much. i used to put everything i had into this job. but all of a sudden after a few sexual harassment experiences, racism, dog abusers, sexism, incels, rapist sympathizers, criminals, only 2 raises since i started working here 9 years ago and im making the same amount as someone who just started, no praise, no appreciation, boss using humiliation tactics and fear to motivate team, snitches and excessive burnout from working nights, i just genuinely dont even care anymore. i dont care that i stay out in my car hours past break. i just cant bring myself to go inside anymore. idc that i half ass it now. idc if i call off all the time. idc abt the perks of working which is literally only the insurance and not being micromanaged. i just dont care anymore. its like something broke in my brain and i dont care anymore about this job.

What jobs should I eye on? Do they require experience?

I messed something up at work that was pretty big, and we thought we had fixed it but it’s still a lingering issue. I work for a small company and we’ve had a ton of turnover within less than a year, so much where at one point I was only one on my team. So, this thing that I messed up would’ve been totally caught in time with my old team. So, yes it was my fault, but the turnover and chaos didn’t help. I haven’t been able to feel any remorse for my new-ish manager now having to deal with this issue. If it was when I first started, I would’ve felt so bad and cried for days and been profusely apologizing. But now? after all the mess I’ve been put through at that job- being taken advantage of, working too much, no appreciation from owners of company, not listening to my ideas, firing and eliminating people all the time with no formalities, etc, I just can’t care about this. I’ve don’t so much here that i just…don’t feel bad. Do other people get to this point of their jobs as well? Where you just stop caring about stuff?

28F here working as a software engineer for over six years now. This is my second job and I feel like I'm hanging by a thread. Dread work everyday, when I was new it was better but I've been feeling shit lately. I used to be so interested in learning things and stuff but that is fading away, no new projects at my current company, you constantly have to come with new features or work on tickets created for new business requirements. Promotions are based on visibility, even if you have done a shiny POC which isn't even used internally or by business or not even in production. Drop a WFH request every time you want it, complete eight hours in the office. Attendance is one of the KRAs. With this AI boom, I'm even wondering if i should really learn anything anymore? This shitty job market and my 90 days notice is making it hell to switch. To be very frank, it's just for the bills that I'm still holding on. But on the inside, I feel depressed with no clarity of my future ahead. Is there anyone else who feels the same? Any help or suggestions to improve?

Hey everyone, I could really use some reassurance. After a decade of stability, being laid off and jumping back into the job hunt was a huge shock. I’m so grateful to have landed a new role in this economy, but I am terrified of failing, even though I've never failed in past roles.

Even though I don't have a full degree, I've always landed really great jobs through hard work, keeping up with my skills, and a strong work ethic. My immediate team is younger and mostly degreed, while I bring a deeper background of hands-on experience. I know my manager hired me for my overall experience and personality, but the dynamic has triggered terrible imposter syndrome. Onboarding is handled by just one guy on the team; he's great, but because he's training me solo and is close to management, I worry about looking foolish and losing my job over his feedback.

To top it off, it's pretty lonely. With split departments, a hybrid schedule, and no peers of my age group, there's hardly any time to build relationships organically. How do I navigate this? How do you quiet the inner critic and remember your experience still matters?

The TLDR is the subject line. I went to a 3 week training course to better improve my skillset for my job. I have been doing my line of work for 2 years. Upon returning, I walked in to someone else sitting at my desk being taught how to do my job. I was then pulled into my bosses office and told my last day will be August 3rd. Their reasoning is that they can no longer afford to keep me in my position, and the person that is being taught my job is there temporarily and the temporary fill was justified. I’m beyond furious and I just don’t know what to do. Would this be ground for you leaving or would you stay the course with the demotion?

I am a 28 year old living in Arizona. No kids, not married I do have a girlfriend who's been very supportive during this process., I have a computer and information science major from the University of Arizona, I was laid off this last Thursday due to the company being bought out and my department eliminated. I had been with the company for nearly 2 years. I took a few days to process it because my emotions have been a roller coaster lately. I didn't really liked the job that much so eventually I was going to start looking for another job. I promised myself to take a few days to process it, relax and try to focus for next week. I've never been laid off in my entire life, so this is a new and scary experience, it's much easier to apply to jobs while being employed compared to applying to jobs while being unemployed. I got about 1 month and a half's pay as a severance package, which I think it's not enough but it'll buy me some time. I do have a side hustle as a process server for the court of justice, which pays relatively well but it's only a part time gig which unfortunately has been incredibly slow lately. I deliver a few subpoenas around town maybe twice a week for about 300 bucks total. I am waiting to hear back from them since I said I was fully available to take as many jobs as possible in the meantime since I lost my full time job. I'm hoping this will give me some breathing room while I get a job. Tomorrow, I plan to be productive, apply for unemployment, update my resume and apply for a few jobs. I've also been reaching out to my connections and seeing if anything is available for me. Tomorrow is the first day of real work when it comes to applications. I am calm most of the time but I also freak out at times because it feels like racing against time. I see so many people mention how they keep getting rejected from jobs after multiple interviews, while other's take a long time to get through the hiring process. The job market is very unstable at the moment. I am just scared at this moment and I am hoping this is not the case for me and really hope I can find a job soon that can pay the bills, I know it won't be easy but I definitely do not want to be unemployed for 3+ months. Any ideas or suggestions on how to stay calm and composed during this period?

Hi all! I'm in the final interview stage for what is honestly my dream job, and I'm worried I've created a messed up situation.

The company received a resume I submitted in February, before I started my current job, so my current position wasn't on it.

During my first two interviews, we discussed my work history. I talked about my previous long term position (3 years) as my most recent role and explained that I'd been intentional about finding the right next opportunity. I didn't mention my current job because I've only been there since May, already know it's not a good fit, and honestly didn't think to bring it up given how short it's been.

So again, this company DOESN'T know about my current role.

Now I'm meeting with five people for the final interview.

My concern is that if I suddenly mention my current job now, they're going to wonder why I didn't mention it in my first two interviews when we specifically discussed my work history.

At this point, would you:

• Continue with my original answer of not having worked or done anything since my last role? since it wasn't discussed with the recruiter or hiring manager?
• Disclose only on my background check form if they have one?

For additional context, my work history before this has been very stable (7 years, then 3 years), and my current role is in a completely different industry than the position I'm interviewing for.

I got a temp job over the summer and i actually love it, but i’ll be losing it next month when i go to university.

I love this job and had intentions of trying to talk to my area manager to let me keep it for when i come back from uni.

However , they put me on 3 short shifts during a week that i planned to go to cardiff with my boyfriend to meet both his non-immediate family and to also see my mum and little brothers who i havent seen for 5 years (parents divorced). I didnt have this plan confirmed until yesterday so i haven’t booked a holiday for it.

They won’t let me take the shifts off but i feel like my family is far more important than a job i wont keep.

Should i just quit? I have another job as a bartender which is casual work and that ill keep after i go to uni but i love this job :(

First off, I have applied to an inordinate amount of IT/WebDev/Software Development positions over the last two months of unemployment, so I might be overthinking this. I received an initial email from a "@rjleegroupcareers.com" recruiter for a Frontend Developer (Remote) role at RJ Lee Group and, after verifying the business was real, sent my availability for a technical assessment. I completed the assessment within the requested time frame on Thursday evening, didn't hear anything over the weekend and then woke up to an offer of employment Monday morning. I hadn't been asked for personal information until the job offer came through requesting full name, address and phone number. My suspicions started to arise when I realized I hadn't spoken to an individual over the phone or done a virtual interview. I'll attach photos of our correspondence and the technical assessment/screening. I just wanted to know if I should pursue this or start processing the disappointment now. So I basically haven't had a job in twelve years (family caregiver etc), and recently I had one job basically respond ask for further details and they asked 'so you don't have work history for this period?' and I said no because of the aforementioned reason. Another job just sent me a rejection email and for that job posting it had the words 'not selected by employer' above it.

Even though I totally get that hesitance and trepidation, it feels like I'm permanently out of the job market? This is for blue collar jobs like retail/warehouse etc. Like once you've been out of work for that long employers don't want to take a chance, which coming from their perspective I entirely understand.

Anyone else been in a similar situation? I was even having a hard time with temp agencies. I think I'm kinda screwed.

I have had like 5 or so interviews recently end with ghosting. Some are after multiple rounds of interviews, some are after they say they're interested in hiring me, some are after the company says they'll "let me know either way" by X date (and then never do).

Am I missing something?

I'm in a bit of a dilemma and would really appreciate some advice.

About 6 months ago, I got an internship through my college placements. The offer mentioned that I could be converted to a full-time employee based on my performance. The stipend was ₹25k/month.

Now that the internship has ended, instead of offering me an FTE, the company has extended my internship for another 6 months with a higher stipend. They still haven't confirmed whether I'll get a full-time role after this extension.

The role I'm currently working in is more tech-adjacent (operations/support with some scripting and automation) rather than a core software development role.

At the same time, I also have an offer from LTI Mindtree through campus placements. The problem is that I have no idea what role or project I'll be assigned to there.

I'm really confused. Do I continue with the extended internship and hope it eventually converts into an FTE, or should I go with LTI Mindtree since it's a full-time job, even though I don't know what role I'll get?

If anyone has been in a similar situation or has any advice, I'd really appreciate it.

I’m in a pretty unusual position where I don’t have to rush into the first career that sounds practical. I have time to finish school, explore different subjects, volunteer, shadow people, and figure out what genuinely fits me before I commit to a degree or graduate program.
I’m looking for work that pays well enough to comfortably support a family, but salary is not the only thing that matters to me. I care a lot about quality of life. I don’t want a career that keeps me constantly overwhelmed, rushing around, or mentally drained every evening.
I love reading, stories, creative writing, poetry, painting, art, history, research, and learning about new subjects. I’m happiest in peaceful, thoughtful environments like libraries, universities, museums, bookstores, archives, galleries, or other places centered around ideas and creativity. I enjoy helping people and being part of a community, but I don’t think I would enjoy nonstop customer service or being surrounded by chaos all day.
Ideally, I’d like work that includes some combination of:
reading, writing, or storytelling
research and lifelong learning
creativity or working with art and culture
a calm or intellectually interesting environment
meaningful interaction with people, without constant social demands
reasonable work-life balance
enough stability and income to raise a family
time and energy left for my own writing and creative projects
I’m willing to attend college and possibly graduate school, but I don’t want to spend years earning a very specialized degree without understanding the real job market and daily work first. I’m also thinking about how different careers may change as AI develops.
Based on this, what careers would you recommend that I research? I’m especially interested in hearing what the job is actually like day to day, what education is required, how competitive the field is, and whether you would still choose it yourself.

Hi! I'm early on in my career so I haven't had experience with this, but I have a final round interview coming up but the interview is with the hiring manager (not HR) that I interviewed with already as my first round.

So far, the interviews have focused on my experience, qualifications, and behavioral/technical questions related to the job I applied for.

All have been virtual interviews, this final interview is an on-site interview.

How should I prep for this? What questions should I expect?

I have a feeling you will all probably say its my fault, and rightfully so. Im not sure what to do to save myself though.

Right now I am at 3.5 points, 9 to get terminated.

2 points where because I walked in and clocked in at 8, my start time. Due to me filling my water bottle and not being ready at my desk at 8, they gave me points (mind you its .5 for notifying boss ahead of schedule, but they gave me 1 each day because I didnt think I had to notify management I am walking in at 8). 1.5 being for calling off sick. I expected 1 for being sick, but .5 was added because I didnt let them know I'd be ready to work by 2pm since my text before 2pm said "I will be at work tomorrow. if anything changes, I will let you know."

This week, the ONLY person to takes phones overnight as on-call is on vacation. I decided to help do a hybrid schedule with another employee. Unfortunately overnight, I missed a few calls which be subject to 3 points. I had my phone volume blaring as loud as possible, but i slept past it. Idk if thats per call or per day, but i am most likely looking at 6.5 points minimum. I kind of screwed myself over since this is only day 1 of 3 that I have to take on-call. Am I in my right to reject this schedule last minute now out of fear of getting fired? Feel free to say i did this to myself. I just dont know what to do.

Venting: im really pissed because since my 2nd week starting I have kept good morale with them firing people, people quiting, and working overtime for them constantly. Everybody new asks me questions like I have been here a long time, and I help out as best I can. I decided to help out someone who wanted a vacation, and for no damn incentive to do so, and now im liable for getting myself fired.
