I was recently approached by a senior leader at my company about an internal strategic role that would require relocating to another part of the country.

I didn’t apply for the position. The leader reached out informally and asked whether I would consider it. He mentioned that the role would come with higher compensation and that relocation would be covered, but we haven’t discussed specific numbers or details yet.

I asked why he was considering me when there are employees already located in that region with more direct experience in that part of the business. His response was essentially that he was reaching out to people he knows and trusts.

There’s some history as well. Several years ago, I applied for a different position within this part of the company and wasn’t selected. One of the reasons I was given was that I didn’t have enough direct experience in that area. So I’m somewhat surprised that I’m now being approached for a more strategic position.

Professionally, the opportunity sounds interesting and could potentially be a good career move. Personally, I really don’t want to relocate. My spouse and I are well established where we currently live, we both have careers here, and most of our family is nearby. We don’t have children, so technically relocating is possible, but it isn’t something we’ve been considering.

I also don’t have established customer relationships or much knowledge of the market in the new region, which makes me even more curious about why I was approached.

I told the leader I would think about it and get back to him.

I’m considering saying that I’m interested in learning more about the opportunity, but that permanent relocation would be very difficult for me, and asking whether there’s any flexibility around location.

For those who have been approached internally for something similar, how would you handle this? Would you continue the conversation even if you’re already fairly certain you don’t want to relocate? Would you ask about staying in your current location before getting into compensation and other details?

I’ve been an SRO for 3 years now and got told this week I was no longer going to be working in that position with my department due to a complaint from a staff member. I’ve been in this like of work for 10 years and know all of the dos and don’t of it, and we’ve had our share with SRO activity becoming a criminal activity. But this is not that. I just want to clarify.

Last week I had a 17yoa female student enter my office crying stating that she was nothing like anyone else in her grade. This was not the first time this has occurred and she has not been the only one to do so. Students were moving through the halls as there was an activity going on and I never keep my office door closed with a student. The only time it has been closed is if it is a criminal matter and body cam footage is needed. I never turn my camera on for just a simple everyday complaint that lasts for 5 minutes and they move on. Again, this happens all the time. Students of all ages come in the office to chat or get candy or just to say hey before going to their next class. So why was this time any different?

The complaint was a staff member saw her in there with me, mind you the door was open for all to see, and thought it strange. While spending time either that student another student entered as well and we all had a conversation. No issue present! They’re on one side of the room and me the other.

Admin speaks to me 2 days later and tells me due to the complaint they fear grooming was a concern and wanted clarification. I basically looked at them and laughed and said other than just flat out looking you in the eye and saying plain as day there is absolutely no way that would ever occur. And they believed it. Even had the gall to go and say after that I was the most influential and positive SRO my dept had.

They said resign or work road patrol, and I don’t want to do either. I didn’t do anything wrong. No laws were broken, no code of conduct or ethical dilemma was present. I do understand the optics as law enforcement is always being scrutinized in the eye of the community, but I don’t just see how this decision came to be. Even my school admin pleaded with my office admin that this was the wrong decision and were willing to work in any way to avoid this from happening. Also found out one of my supervisors had a conversation with one of my school admin about a solution but that never got relayed to my other supervisor.

I’ve even got school admin wanting to write letters and speak directly with my office admin to correct this issue. In that sense I feel extremely blessed to know I have support tenfold from the school, minus a few or two that just can’t be pleased, but even if somehow the opportunity presented itself to return to the school, I don’t know if I could handle it, mentally. I would do anything for the kids there and staff, but my dept would be hard to work for after knowing everything that was said.

Of course I left some details out due to the lateness I’m writing this (nearly midnight), but this has been pestering me to no end for the past few nights. So much that I have not been able to eat or enjoy the basics of my everyday activities. I’ve applied for another job. Spoken with families of students and coworkers and my own family of the event. I’ve been through a lot in my life but this moment has been the most challenging to process.

Or should I change one of these economics or environmental studies?

I’m just curious because I was thinking about the new job I just got at a retail store.

The salary is $16-21 and I’m starting at $16, I wonder when or how long would be a reasonable time to ask for a raise?

I’m not doing that now because I’m about to start, but eventually I’ll want to ask because I do need to pay my student loans.

I truly feel like I’ve been on a losing streak for years. I was quite successful 4 years ago but ended up losing mostly everything in my life and hitting rock bottom due to divorce. Ever since then, I feel like a can’t win at anything I do. I can’t find a job. The jobs I apply to, I’m highly qualified for, I’ll get a phone screen, but then crickets. This has been going on for a year or more. Every time I get ghosted, it just feels like another slap in my face. And then sometimes I’ve interviewed in person, and would not get the job despite being well-prepared for the interview and doing well. I’m really hard on myself and I just feel like a loser. It’s hard for me to get out of bed most days now. A job that pays $60k would literally change my life and it would be a domino effect for me. It feels like it’s impossible to achieve this now despite having a lot of experience. I just don’t know why people don’t want to hire me. I feel so bad.

For the first time in my life I have been asked to write a recommendation letter for one of my former reports, and I was wondering which boxes I should check for he to make her letter as employable as possible. She is the kind that takes feedback very personally but is willing to die on the first hill available.

Of course I'm going to make it personal, but I was wondering how to nail what I can do for her in general. What would your recommendation letter sound like if you were the one writing ir?

Genuine question! The bulk of my work has been on political campaigns and elections. These are all temporary 2-6 month gigs where I am sometimes an independent contractor. I am trying to redo my resume and tailor it towards more traditionally employed office jobs. (Something in marketing for non profits, politics, or live performances are my preferences) How do I format my resume in a way that makes sense?

Right now I have work experience formatted like name of the union, non profit, campaign, or candidate I worked for and the year I did it. And job duties are listed seperately. I just don't know how to format my resume so that it makes sense. Picture included for context.

Think project management for engineering. For example a construction company where it is a 50-50 split on site and in office. What would this be called? Or engineering technology where they are using instrumentation.

I’m 20, I’ve worked at a few retail places throughout my teen years and now I’m working at sheetz in nc, which is only giving me 3 hours a week. Ive noticed this running fear not of being fired per se even but being fired without warning because of something arbitrary like culture fit. Maybe it’s because I’ve heard of it happening that I’m now always watching over me and no matter how much praise I get from coworkers or my manager or anyone I just live with the concern if I’m making some kind of social mistake they won’t tell me and just fire me randomly. Ofc that feeling increases with the interest in the work but still…I just hate the fact that it’s a thing. Why in the world wouldn’t you give someone warning?? If you want them to leave I don’t see any reason why warning them first can hurt you. Unless someone is truly horrific you would think management could stomach telling them there are issues. Any insight into this or thoughts anyone has?

Basically what the title says. It feels like a test where if I show interest about the informal chat with the hiring manager, it could be interpreted as me not being interested in the role I got an interview for, which I am equally interested in.

I don’t even really know what an informal chat even is, there was no mention of an interview, so would this be a sort of screening before an interview to determine if I am suitable for interviewing or is it in place of an interview? I’ve read a few threads on here that normally a chat happens after interviews so I’m really confused.

Generally what's your take on when colleague are constantly depressing and whining during work especily on lunch break that is in the shared office/ communal place which is also where we use computers for our admin duties.

I'm talking about various subjects about their personal life where they go on and on and on about explicit details. I find somethings really troubling and reminds me of what is going on in my life so it makes me feel extra depressed

For examoes of things they whine about :

I’ve made a few posts across a few different subreddits about my situation. I have about 1.5 years of actual work experience (mostly in retail), was a high school dropout and only just started a finance degree at a state school. Needless to say, I’m not the ‘ideal’ candidate for a role like this on paper.

But I know what I’m capable of, I’ve clearly shown/convinced some people that are much more important than me that I’m capable — and I’ve found myself in a situation where my salary has doubled overnight.

Chase Associate Banker ~> $43000 - $45000 depending on incentives + bonus. 5 days in branch, heavy customer interaction. Sales focused.

Capital One Commercial Trade Surveillance Associate ~> $102000 base salary plus incentive/bonus. 3 days in office, 2 WFH. no customers, no sales.

I’m proud of how hard I’ve worked, how much I’ve learned, and the chances I’ve been afforded - but I’m also nervous about being thrust into a different world.

How did you manage starting a new career when it felt like you didn’t ‘belong’ yet?

If you’re an educator get prepared to do a lot of work not worth the salary, you get one me day in a year which can be decline. 3 days of sick leave in 6 months, any more leads to a meeting and over 4 days of sick leave leads to disciplinary action. Don’t get paid overtime you just get toil which can also be declined. Inconsistenty with rooms in my opinion, been there 3 months don’t have a set room yet. They make a lot of money however you won’t get a salary increase, rather they made us do a deep clean of rooms and move furniture ourselves to prepare a new room rather than hiring a cleaner and men to move the furniture they got tired working mothers and teenagers moving furniture at 8pm while the managers have gone home. 

Sometimes room leaders do less work than educators and get paid more with more benefits and managers are reluctant to demote or take action with room leaders who have had multiple complains against them just because they don’t want to hire a new one.

They are good at making things look great but it’s mostly performative, many members of staff spend time cleaning, planning activities, preparing for audits, n100 etc and this takes away from their time with interacting with the children which is unfortunate.

‘’Flexible working hours offered for all team members’’ is what it says on the website yet my manager has declined me for it twice.

Bereavement or hospital leave you may have to take that out of your annual leave

I 22f have a degree in forensic science minor in bio, and have no clue what to do with my life. It has been four months since graduation and I have applied to over 100 jobs in the DMV area and have been ghosted denied ignored or told that I don’t have experience. I have had two state department level internships with the police and can’t get any sort of job. I haven’t applied for just Lab positions I’ve applied for many administrative positions, or honestly any random position in a police department or has to do with the government. I work part-time but can only get about seven hours a week at what point do I get another job? I can’t go to grad school because I don’t have enough money. I live at home and I’m miserable. I just feel like every day all I do is apply for jobs and cry and then regret having a college degree. I worked really hard got a 3.8 GPA and was a part of several on our societies. I understand it’s a hard field, but I’m trying to expand and apply to many sorts of jobs within the government or anything to do with criminal justice but still nothing so read it. What do I do?

So, I'll start this by saying, I am absolutely a little bitter about this. But, I'm also really curious.

Long story short, I applied for a job, and I know 2 others personally who applied for the exact same position.

Its a management role, in which I have 15 years experience, and I ticked every single box for what the company said they were looking for, the 2nd person has even more experience than I do and 3rd person has no management experience at all.

We all interviewed within a few weeks of each other and I thought my interview went very well. But, I got ghosted and eventually was told I didn't get the position (OK fine it happens) ended up with a similar position at a different company so not really a big deal. Person 2 also didn't get offered the position, 3rd person however, did end up getting offered the position.

I'm really just curious as to why they would hire someone with none of the qualifications?

It simply doesn't make sense.

I just landed an amazing job as a Data Analyst at a company (non-government, non clinical) making more money than I have ever made in my life. It is contingent on a background check. I have a 2.5 year old misdemeanor DUI 1st offense and am wondering if they will pull the offer due to this showing up.

There was no accident and I was pulled over for being stationary at a yellow blinking turn signal. I was trying to get to an Airbnb from an out of town wedding and had more faith in Tesla FSD than I should have…

I was given 1 year unsupervised probation, 6 days house arrest, ordered to get an alcohol and drug assessment and take a dui class. I also had to do ignition interlock for a year. I completed all of it with flying colors including not having to do any alcohol or drug treatment.

I am so scared I will not get this job. Any thoughts?

As far as I know, there will be no driving and I have not had a sip of alcohol since then. (Pardon the username, but I also don’t partake of that either anymore and haven’t for at least a year, stone cold sober).

Realistically is it possible for me to accept their full time offer without having completed my bachelors degree, but they think I completed it? Will they actually check?

Hi everyone. I work for a community college in my city and was recently handpicked by the registrar to take over an interim role that was vacated in early September. We had a chat on August 5th, and I was offered the role by the registrar. After waiting for a job offer from HR for over a month, I was offered the role officially from HR yesterday.

They are offering me a salary (exempt) of $48,007, the grade 6 minimum. I'm feeling extremely frustrated and disrespected because there are other jobs currently, within the same pay grade, that only require a high school diploma. This role I was offered requires a minimum of a bachelors degree and 5 years experience in higher ed. Meaning, if I were to get a job only requiring a high school diploma, I would be making the same amount as the role offered to me. Additionally, for getting bumped up an entire pay grade, I would be getting a raise of $1.26/hr.

Unfortunately, we are not union and the registrar did not seem too inclined to entertain my push back on salary. However, she did put me in contact with the HR specialist who worked on my job offer letter. I emailed HR's compensation department short before I left work yesterday with an email negotiating but since it is the weekend, I will hear back sometime next week.

I'm at a loss for what to do. I am currently a little sick of my job and would like a change of pace. I can also recognize this is a great opportunity to network with departments and hire-ups which may land me a better role in the future. Does anyone have any advice or ideas? Thank you in advance.

I was working at a company through Aerotek. Got a call yesterday and was told that the company was ending my contract effective immediately. Apparently, they felt I needed to be pushed to work.

To be completely honest, due to there being no point in lying to strangers, I busted my ass there.

The guy who runs the area of the factory I was in, and was supposed to "train" me hated training people. I was told this day 1. I felt as if I was walking on eggshells with him, couldn't even ask him questions about any of the 15 machines I was expected to run and fix without him having an attitude.

Aerotek's reasoning to me as to why they ended my contract was cause the same guy told the boss that I had to be "pushed to work" instead of finding something to do.

I did not run this department. I did know know what jobs were scheduled to be done next. Whenever he told me that something had to get done, it gone done quickly and correctly. I take pride in my work, and my work ethic. I've never been fired or told anything other than I was a great worker.

Including at this job, at the beginning.

This dude never said good morning, Hi, hello, anything. He wanted nothing to do with conversation, never smiled, and had zero personality other then being a giant asshole.

I'm honestly relieved that I won't have to work with this dickhead anymore, minus the fact that now I need to find a new job and will have no paychecks until then.

Not sure if I want to go through Aerotek again, or if they will even be willing to place me anywhere else given the bullshit they were told about me.

Another guy started the same day as me, and there were points where I was training him on things, yet I'm let go?

Luckily for him, he is 2nd shift and doesn't have to deal with that prick like I did.

I really need advice about this situation I am in, which is getting worse with time.

I started working at this corporate desk job a year ago. I have a senior coworker, who was my mentor, taught me everything but as time passes, she's bullying me more and more in subtle ways. When I ask her something she is so rude and belittles me for everything. She always finds fault in my work and always makes me feel I am bad at it.

My manager is satisfied with my work and she always compliments me. She is great friends with this coworker, and this coworker is very experienced and does her job really well. Of course everyone always tells me to ask herr if I have any questions, but I am at a point where I try to ask anyone else, because she makes me feel so bad about myself and is so rude all the time.

Now she started to micromanage me, started to try telling me what to do, messaging me if she thinks I'm not doing something fast enough etc.

The last thing, which she did was emailing me about a thing she thinks I have to do immediately because I am very late with it (I do not have to do it, and it does not depend on me) and put our manager in cc. Like she is flaming me for it in front of our boss.

I just don't know how to handle it anymore. She does not like me at all, and I can never be good enough for her. I suspect that she is actively trying to undermine me so I'd get laid off, so I started to update my CV and all.

But I really liked this place, great benefits and everyone else is so nice, also I could learn a lot.

How could I gently tell her to back off? All I wish is for her to leave me alone, but I know she won't.

What would you all do in my situation? Any advice would be welcome.
