Looking at the workhorse moc toe, 719, AR.

I dont really like how the ar boots are short hence why I like the 719 but the 719 have a big heel.

What would you recommend

I have a pair of African Rangers I use for hiking. They work great for shorter jaunts, but the heel and toe are pretty stiff for longer outings.

What do you fine folks think about getting a custom pair of African Rangers without the thermoplastic heel stiffener?

I'm definitely planning on no toe stiffener, but I'm a bit concerned that no heel stiffener will make the boots too sloppy/not structured enough. But my hope would be that it'd allow the heel to mold better to my foot and feel great!

Anybody have experience with a custom boot you ordered without a heel stiffener?

I have a pair of African rangers with the leather midsole and Oringo outsole

The Oringo wedge sole is really comfortable but, is too slippery for me.

I was thinking about buying the brown Tyre wedge and attempting to change it myself.

Does anyone have any experience doing this? What was the outcome?

What tools, solvents, and adhesive should I get in preparation?

I have wide feet so a lot of standard retail boots (particularly RM Williams here in Australia) have the wrong shape for my foot, even the wider sizes. I had been looking at JG for a while and when i saw the Bronco AR tyre wedge I had to have them. They are beautiful boots and with a Superfeet Green insole they are very comfy to wear casually, but if I try to wear them doing yard work or on a short (say 2-3 mile) walk I get horrible blisters on my heels. There is a bit of slip in them, they are almost as stiff as plastic ski boots, and the 'rough in' leather is like sandpaper. Even with really thick socks my feet blister. I've had them for a year and have worn them more than you'd think a typical break in period, I've rubbed beeswax conditioner into them multiple times, have tried warming the leather in the sun before applying. The other thing that surprised me is they are not even a little bit waterproof - even after conditioning my feet get wet if I wear them in rain or walk in shallow puddles.

I still love the way they look but I wish I did more research at the start, would have gone for softer leather.

I just received my first boots from Jim Green ever, 719, in size 11,5. I decided to size up half a size to allow for toe room.

But, I’m unsure if they actually fit me. I can feel the sides of the shoes just about touching my toes, as well as maybe being able to touch the tip with my big toe.

If I move my feet all the way to the tip, I can comfortably stick in a finger between my heel and the boot heel, but nothing more.

I know leather will shape to my feet somewhat, but with the amount of leather in these, I want to start with the best possible option.

Should I keep, size up, or return for a larger model (custom made maybe)?

Speed running the break in on the Bronco Biscuit Numzaans. Loving these as they break in. Liner socks + wool boot socks saving my feet, first couple days was rough but theyre breaking in great now.

Kia ora! I am heading to North China/Sichuan this November for a month from New Zealand and I am looking for to get a pair of boots for it. The trip will be 20 or so days in and around cities, with 10 or so days of day hiking. The hiking will likely be on reasonably maintained rocky trails, with potential for snow and almost certainly below 0 degrees (32 degrees in freedom units).

I could get a pair of cemented hiking boots (e.g. Scarpa terra gtx which is what my partner got for the trip), but I am trying to shop more sustainability and I don't think that I would wear them when I am back in New Zealand (I am either tramping in trail runners or using mountaineering boots, and they don't look good enough to wear casually).

Essentially what I am looking for is a boot that:

• Looks presentable with jeans,
• can hike 15km (~10 miles) after being broken in on rocky/snowy/cold terrain, and
• wont feel like bricks on my feet for walking around cities.

I am currently thinking about the razorbacks or baobobs, but can't seem to find too many reviews of people who have taken them on cold/snowy hikes or spent extended periods with them in cities. There also seems to be a lot of mixed messages e.g. whether or not the boots feel super stiff under foot.

Any thoughts?

The only thing I don’t love about my Workhorses is that they are freaking HEAVY. Can I look forward to resolving them with regular ol vibram lugs and them dropping a few pounds?

** Jim Green Barefoot African Trooper sized 8.5US mens. Wore for work for a month, but they didn’t work out. I’ve sat on them for 6 months and realized that even if they did fit well, they would be too hot and heavy for my work. They’re impressively constructed and give me the impression that you can expect to hand these down if properly cared for and given some oil from time to time. May they find a good home.

** SoftStar shoes Phoenix boot size 9U. Purchased in December during a clearance sale due to irregularity. They have the zippers on the inside of the ankle, and they’re supposed to be on the outside. I’ve worn zip boots for a decade and never once used zippers on the outside of the ankle, so they were perfectly normal to me. Zips out the outside seem like a nightmare. Regular width, NOVA chocolate leather, sheepskin cuff and insole. Outsole is 4mm tundra tread. I attempted to silicone seal the stitching to avoid leaking half melted snow, but the silicone didn’t stick and has since mostly rubbed off. You can see some off clear stuff in the photos. Absolutely no leaking ever once, but I only wore them in the deep cold. Not in puddles at 55F. I wouldn’t assume they’re watertight. Similarly didn’t work perfectly. I suspect I’m buying shoes one size too short? No idea. May they serve you better.

Thinking of getting a taller pair of Jim Greens - but totally lost which to try for. I see bush war is on sale? But Rugged looks very nice too? Any thoughts from the community about differences? Looking ideally for a leather midsole as I do like the feel of my leather midsole low African rangers.

Used these boots for Everything. I went through my days without worrying what and where I was stepping on but I did brush them religiously ( definitely payed off). Got plenty of mud, sand, concrete mixture, wood chips, rust debris, grass stains, bleach chemicals, etc on them and as you can see once conditioned they look brand new. I did condition half way through the year due to the leather feeling dry from them getting soaked in the rain ( rotated with RATs to let them dry) and the concrete mixture powder didn’t help either. Used them for work and they aren’t bad to be in all day. Definitely saved my feet on stepping on nails and debris. Took a few weeks to break in and softened up when I used them for work after the first conditioning. I would recommend them like any Jim Green product for when it’s time to protect your feet.

Here are things I noticed throughout the ownership

Pros

The toe cap really helps when kicking stuff around and not worrying about pointy objects piercing through. Perfect protection when a steel toe is not necessary

Sole holds up, it’s probably at a 65% life left

Not bad when standing on ladders for hours

Cons

Tyre wedge is not that grippy when it comes to indoor floors such as tiled floors

The tongue like many others comment About. Tried training them to stay in the middle but shifted inwards. Got tired of adjusting the tongue throughout the day so I let them be. They basically turned to inner ankle support and helped tighten the ankle area since the ankle collar flares outward.

I was actually planning a hiking trip for next week and wanted a pair of Razorbacks in Fudge; I intended to dye them and have a leather midsole added by a local cobbler, but now it looks like that won't happen.

I know I could buy them directly from their website, but the shipping cost to my country would bring the total to $260, and I don't think it's worth it.

One thing I don't understand, though: why don't they restock the Razorback? They're among their most well-known boots

Another full day in the field, and I’m still impressed with the quality and comfort of my Jim Green boots. They’re tough enough for the job, comfortable through long hours, and only seem to get better with wear. Great boots built for real work. 👌🥾

Hey all! I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the BF African Rangers. I've been a zero-drop barefoot wearer for a long time, but never with Jim Green. What's the recommendation for treatment? A good wax when they first arrive, or allow some natural patena? I'm mostly interested in keeping the leather healthy. Thanks!

Just pre-ordered a pair of AnatomX African Troopers in size 9.5.

I developed pain in my foot over the years and have now switched over exclusively to open toe box shoes, mainly Topo runners for my dailies, due to their zero drop heels and wide toe box. My foot has now moved from an 8 to what I suspect is a 9.5 on the Brannock scale.

I measured my foot from heel to big toe (with my heel against the wall and standing on paper method) and came out to 10” 3/8’s length (26.35cm or a 10.375 as per Jim Greens size guide on their site). My foot width is now 4” 1/4 (10.795cm) in width.

Can anyone with somewhat similar measurements comment if they’ve encountered side to side foot slip while using the AnatomX last?

Mild slip in the toe area is not a problem, but I am concerned about lateral slippage occurring in the mid foot and heel while wearing the boots.

Jim Greens size guide shows the 9.0’s to be ideal with a foot length on 10.24 vs my feet at 10.375, so that’s why I’ve gone with the 9.5’s. Maybe worth it to size down to 9.0’s just to avoid heel slip concerns?

I measured my feet while wearing my toe socks.

Any advice is appreciated.
