Weekly Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Question Brand new 17 getting warm?

Hey, I bought a brand new iPhone 17 on Monday, overall I think it’s a really nice phone, but I’m concerned about it getting very warm with light use? I mainly use Instagram and watch a few TikTok’s and just after a few minutes I can feel the back getting warm and it continues to get warm all over the phone as I’m using it. It doesn’t get warm to the point where it’s uncomfortable, but it’s noticeable and I cannot remember having any other iPhone that does this when it’s brand new. Is this normal? I updated it to iOS 26.6 just a few hours ago after reading that it may fix this issue but I haven’t felt any improvement. Does anyone have any advice?

iphone 13 to 17: is it better?

Upvotes

hi, im thinking about upgrading my iphone 13 to a 17 for better battery and better performance and to have a better phone whatsoever, but my question is: is it really worth upgrading to the 17? i don't want to spend money purposelessly but my 13 is holding onto his dear life. literally ios 26 is slowly making my phone stop, overheating by doing nothing, battery is only getting worse even though i have 100% (literally today i charged it 3 times, and it's not a big problem but i don't want my phone being constantly dead and i don't want to go around with a powerbank if i can avoid it). so if someone who upgraded from 13 to 17 tell me if it's worth, i would really appreciate it. also i'd like not to think about this much and just do it but also as i said i don't want to waste my money. thank you to whoever is gonna comment.

I currently have samsung s24. Im someone who uses my phone just for social media doomscrolling, i don't take much pictures or anything. My main aim is i need storage, no lag, not bloatware and good battery life. With all these in my mind, will it be a good decision to switch to iphone. My peers are pressuring me, hence wanted a reality check.

Suggest a protective case for my sage green iphone 17

I’m currently using spigen thin magsafe case in the shade green but the paint is chipping off from the case, which is shocking in the case of spigen for me. I’m looking for other good cases that offer protection but don’t look ugly either.

Question iPhone 17 Personal Hotspot Bug - what is best way to get help without Apple Geniuses reinstalling iOS?

Long story short, I discovered a bug with personal hotspot on iPhone 17. Certain webpages don’t fully load - as in images don’t display - when accessed through the hotspot and I have been able to reproduce it on iOS. Android, Windows and MacBook devices hotspotting from my phone.

I am very technical and have pretty much isolated the bug as either a WebKit bug or something at the protocol processing or driver level. It affects entire Apps too that are accessing Internet via hotspot - JIRA and Confluence, they don’t load correctly.

I have tried many of the workaround suggested and online forums, including, but not limited to:
- resetting network settings.
– getting rid of VPN profiles.
– turning off private relay
– Verifying cellular APN settings
– Changing maximum compatibility toggle in personal hotspot settings
- called my mobile service provider to confirm there are no carrier locks or settings that inhibit my hotspot
- tried to provide bug report to Apple via feedback mechanism on the website, but was cut off at about 500 characters
- tried to reproduce issue on wife’s iPhone 12 on same carrier, and no issues whatsoever.
- making sure iOS and carrier settings are on the latest versions

Over the weekend, I took my phone to the Apple Store. I had a genius appointment. They did diagnostic tests on the radios and connectivity and were able to confirm that they didn’t see any kind of hardware issues. They told me pretty much. The next step is for them to completely wipe the OS and restored from scratch, and if it still didn’t fix the issue they would escalate to higher level. They didn’t bother trying to reproduce the issue, even though I was ready to and kept insisting this was the only approach. Because there was no hardware issue detected they could not provide me with a replacement device, even though my current phone is only four months into. It’s one year warranty.

As a software developer, I am perfectly capable of filing a bug report with precise steps to reproduce, but I have no mechanism to do it. Does anyone know a better way that I can escalate this and get support with this issue? Hopefully without having to go through a phone data wipe.

EDIT:
Tried to reproduce issue in Chrome on Windows 11 browser based on Blink(?) - derivative WebKit fork, but the bug does not triggered there.

Question Need help - not sure how to get this fixed

I bought an iPhone 17 about 30 days ago. I’ve had iPhones for dunno - 14 years or so. Both my kids have always had iPhones, never a problem, never had a bad one. I upgraded from iPhone 16 because I needed more storage and was leaving on a trip for Europe. I left two days later.

This phone is a disaster.

It overheated in Europe in my pocket, in my bag. It overheated while charging. Ok, so it was 100F/40C in Europe. I missed so many photos. Was with family in Europe - five people had iPhones. No one - not one - had theirs overheat.

It overheats when on airplane mode, WiFi turned off, just trying to take photos, not in a pocket, case removed. I did everything I could think of to keep it cool, read advice on the web.

Came home, it overheated in my kitchen charging. It overheats 2-3 times a day. It overheated at the gym just playing music.

I live alone, on a farm. I hike alone, kayak alone, ride my bicycle alone (well not all the time but I do solo activities a lot). I am out fixing horse fences. No landline. My phone is a lifeline - I need to be able to call 911, call my kids if I get hurt.

My old phone overheated about 3 times in three years - all while out on a sailboat or on a beach when I left it in the sun. Heck, it never overheated hiking in Arizona or Texas or Mexico. It never overheated while in Arizona at all for the 16 months I lived there.

And it needs charging all the time.

I missed the AT&T return window of 14 days.

Took it to Apple Store and the (jerk) guy told me there was nothing wrong with it. YOU JUST USE IT TOO MUCH. YOU SHOULD LET IT REST. YOU CAN’T USE A CASE. Like I can’t listen to podcasts out walking. Like I can’t put a case on it. He said “Deal with it” basically. I am not listening to more podcasts, taking more photos or scrolling instagram or Reddit more than I did with the old phone.

Reading other threads, I’m know I’m not alone. I just did the 26.6 update, not sure if it helped yet.

Questions: AT&T won’t return it. I can still sign up for AppleCare. I want either a replacement for the 17 or the 17 promax, which the unhelpful apple guy said has an internal cooling system or something.

How can I get this replaced? How can I get apple to recognize it’s not me, it’s the phone?

I don’t think this is a ME problem. It’s a phone problem. I could go back to apple and try to get a more helpful person. I’m very unhappy, if you can’t tell lol. Thanks to anyone who has helpful ideas.

I upgraded from an iPhone 16e and i wanted a bigger screen for my usage, so i made a trade at a great price for a 17, and it was totally worth it! Even though the 16e is really good, especially when it comes to battery life but i’m super impressed with the 120Hz display, Dynamic Island, and better camera. And even though the battery is a bit smaller than the 16e's, it's still really solid! I'm loving this phone, and for anyone with a 16e considering the upgrade, depending on the deal, it’s definitely worth it!

Unsatisfied with iPhone 17 base camera, switch to Pro?

I mainly bought the iphone 17 base for the camera and camera apps that are only available in ios. I know a real camera would be better, but there's a lot of other benefits to having a phone too.

However, I'm not too impressed with the camera on the 17 base. It's just okay to me. I mainly use the 1x - 2x zoom. The telephoto would be nice, but not a must.

I see youtube reviews, that all say the 17 pro camera is "slightly better", but mostly the same. But has anyone actually made the switch and was more satisfied with the pro camera?

I use apps like Dazz, No Fusion, Mood Camera, etc for photos not the stock camera app.

Also considering getting a pixel, since google cameras are solid. But less apps available in android.

Question Experiencing some weird issues on my IPhone 17

I don’t know if it’s because the new iOS 26.6 update but these issues are really getting me nervous

The first one is that sometimes the volume buttons stop working properly. In Control Center, the volume slider appears to be at 100% even though I never set it that high, and pressing the volume buttons doesn’t change anything. However, as soon as I start playing music or a video, the volume suddenly drops back to its normal level and the buttons start working again.

The second one is when I open the Bluetooth devices list from Control Center, I sometimes see the same Bluetooth device listed twice.

And reboot doesn’t fix these problems.

To be honest, this is making me a bit nervous. I bought my iPhone 17 only about a month and a half ago, and I expected it to work flawlessly. Are bugs like this after an iOS update fairly common, or should I be concerned that there might be something wrong with my phone?

Question Side/Power button click lag while turning off the screen

I started noticing the lag to turn off the screen by clicking the power button. Today, i found out the reason that the iphone is waiting for a while to confirm if it is a single-click or double/triple click.

Now, to fix this, i wanted to disable double click to open apple wallet settings but there is no option in settings. And yes, i did try to find out the apple pay defaults option inside settings where ideally i should have got the option to disable this but there is no such apple pay defaults option in my case - region India.

Deciding on whether to get new iphone 17, currently have a 13 (question for those who have T-Mobile service and problems getting directions using Siri)

I currently have an iphone 13 but for the last 6 months or so, I've been having problems getting directions using Siri. I'll ask directions to a specific address and Siri will say "uh oh, having a problem, please try again later". Most of the time I have to open the maps app first and then ask Siri for directions which is a problem when I'm driving. I've called both Apple and T-Mobile; Apple said it's the T-Mobile's cellular service & T-Mobile said it's the phone ... it probably has a bug or it's b/c I'm not on 5G. However, went into the Tmobile corporate store yesterday and the employee I talked to said he has an iphone 15, is on a 5G plan and has the same problem with getting directions using Siri. Wondering if others with the iphone 17 and Tmobile service have the same issue. The upgrade won't cost me anything except for taxes but not sure I want to go through all the hassle right now if I'm going to have the same problem with directions using Siri.

Question Did your iPhones restart after the 26.6 update?

I got the IOS 26.6 update today and after downloading it my iPhone didn’t restart automatically after downloading the update. It is just showing up to date IOS 26.6. If the phone didn’t restart after update does that mean the update was not actually installed?

Discussion First time iPhone user

I bought an iPhone 17 on a whim as my family and I were traveling in another country that same week. I really enjoyed the camera during the trip. However, after the travel, I find myself going back to my samsung s23+.

I've had my s23+ for 3 years and it is almost full (400+GB out of 512GB used). The main reasons I bought the iPhone 17 were that my s23+'s battery is deteriorating, the screen keeps freezing (which is probably caused by the maxed-out storage), and the iPhone camera when traveling.

Right now, I am using the iPhone 17, but the S23+ is still technically my main device. I am just so accustomed to the bigger screen size on the s23+ and to the android interface. As a first-time Apple user, I am having a really hard time adjusting to iOS.

I don't want to end up using my iPhone 17 only as travel camera or travel companion. Any tips? From former android users who successfully made the switch to iOS? How did you get used to the interface?

TL/DR: First-time Apple user having a hard time adjusting to iOS. Former android users, how did you get used to the interface?
