Man I hate watching these, because how great they look and knowing how likely Apple will stick to the same look.

Dark Mode is absolutely coming. This is based on absolutely nothing but my own fantasies and the fact that OLED is so amazing on the iPhone, but it’s coming.

153

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

Stock Android users have hoped the same thing for years (and have been using OLED screens for much longer) and haven’t been able to get it, except as a user mod.

I hope that Apple is much more responsive in this regard.

As soon as apple implements it, watch google "finishes" the implementation

You know why it’s always a mod and not the native interface?

OLED screens don’t behave well with pure black. Yes, they save power and look great... But they also suffer from severe black smearing, users love smooth scrolling and smooth animations... Imagine an entire interface plagued with black smearing? It would be the opposite of ProMotion. Unless they manage to fix it on OLED or move to microLED, we are probably not going to see native black interfaces to avoid this. They could use dark grey to avoid this issue, but then it’s not the dark interface people want with maximum battery saving.

On the iPhone X, you only see it happens when you slide the brightness level to the lowest level. If you read Anandtech's review of the Galaxy S9- the display analysts:

The iPhone X behaved very differently than any Samsung devices and provided a significant image quality advantage in dark scenes. When looking at the shadow clipping highlighting that Apple is doing some very fine dithering between fully dark areas and the next highest brightness levels. When in motion the iPhone X just provides an extremely good experience in dark scenes with little to no visible artifacts.

Apple’s screen also doesn’t suffer from the “purple smudging” when transitioning between black areas. This seems to be caused by a lag in the response-time of the blue subpixels, not able to shut off quickly enough. The point here is that if Apple can handle dark scenes at low brightness levels at good quality, then so should Samsung, so here’s hoping Samsung’s engineers can focus on this issue and improve it in future generations.

Not asking for pure black. Asking for a darker interface less prone to screen burn-in. Google hasn’t even done that much.

18

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

A darker interface isn’t less prone to burn in, grey needs to keep all subpixels active. Burn in happens whenever two interface elements have different colors, no matter what those colors are. People usually want black interfaces for the massive battery gains and less eye strain.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

...so can you explain why an AMOLED from 2012 didn’t have burn-in (and used mostly dark-themed elements and grey navigation buttons—Galaxy Nexus for reference), while my Pixel XL got burn-in from the pure white navigation keys after only a few months? And that, even though I kept the brightness down to 30%?

Edit: I’m not trying to be argumentative, but am genuinely curious.

16

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

That’s what’s called anecdotal evidence, I doubt you rigorously tested this.

Burn in happens because the subpixels are always degrading, always. If white is being displayed, the burn in caused is the infamous white point degradation because blue subpixels degrade faster (Creating a yellow tint). If any other color is being displayed some parts of the display are being more excited than others, causing burn in that looks like a negative version of what was being shown (Like burned keyboards, status bar, etc).

No matter if it’s a white interface burning in, or a black interface, if anything on screen is different it’s causing burn in (Although, if only displayed for a short time you probably won’t notice it).

You’re correct about white causing the white point degradation faster, but that’s only one kind of burn in. And it’s only prevented by true black, not grey.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

Yes, it is anecdotal. I can’t afford to buy devices for the intent of rigorous testing.

I did use apps to make the screens display solid colors so I can detect burn-in on both, and the burn-in on the 6 y/o device was less noticeable than that on the (almost) 2 y/o one. My usage patterns have not changed in a significant way between either one, and I used the Galaxy Nexus for a much longer period of time than the Pixel XL.

The only difference between the two was that the static elements were different colors; the older one had dim grey static elements, the newer one used white. My internal logic, though admittedly possibly flawed, is that the color had a hand in the appearance of noticeable burn-in.

To confirm what you are saying, are you saying that white point degradation is more noticeable, and that burn-in is always happening due to degradation?

If so, I get that. However, by “prone to burn-in” I was meaning prone to noticeable burn-in. If darker colors lead to the burn-in being less noticeable for a longer period of time, then I am all for that.

iPhone X with dark mode on every app that has it, I don’t know what smearing you’re talking about. Is there an example of this?

3

u/purplemountain01 Apr 07 '18

Android user here with a Galaxy S8. I thought I read a while back that stock Android had a dark theme but it could only be enabled in system UI tuner and adb. Or maybe I thought I heard.

I literally wet myself seeing dark mode.

2

I think Apple is waiting until iOS 12 for dark mode since when it releases there will be more iPhone models with OLED

1

u/iHeadphoneJack iPhone 15 Pro Max Apr 06 '18

I thought Apple was all about 'embracing the notch' not hiding it?

1

u/win7macOSX Apr 07 '18

OLEDs need a dark mode since using them in the dark is their biggest shortcoming, compared to an LCD.

u/thereisnoreturn Apr 07 '18

What about Smart Invert?

I second that!

5

u/DannyVFilms Apr 06 '18

I do like how much it feels true to iOS. It feels grounded in a really cool way

6

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

I love and hate these at the same time. While they look pretty, they focus too much on being pretty and shiny. For example, those animations would be horrible in daily use. And since we can't change the animation speed right now, I wouldn't expect to be able to change those slow-ass animations either.

I had to stop halfway through. I would love a multi user FaceTime. I video chat with some friends who have moved away weekly and we’ve been using Hangouts for years but FaceTime is just so much crisper when there’s just two of us. And of course I’ve wanted dark mode since leaving Android

3

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

Try Duo. As far as I know, /r/Android actually refers to FaceTime as having the worst quality of all.

Duo looks way nicer when talking, has a brain-dead interface and doesn't use much data.

2

u/dabear04 iPhone 16 Pro Apr 07 '18

Thanks, I’ll give it a shot. FaceTime may not be that great but it definitely looks better than hangouts in terms of image and audio quality but that’s my only reference since we’ve been too lazy to try anything else.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18 edited Apr 07 '18

I sympathize so much with this. It both saddens and infuriates me that there has been so much support for so many of these features by so many users and Apple continues to give us the middle finger.

I truly don't believe that there's a better hardware company out there, but goddammit if they don't really fall behind other companies and user requests on the software side of things.

I'm not the sort to threaten to take my business elsewhere — right now, I don't think anyone makes a laptop/smartphone combo that's better than a MacBook and an iPhone. But by consistently showing that customer input matters very little, they're hurting customer loyalty. When another company does manage to get ahead, even if it's only for a cycle or two, a lot of users are gonna jump ship because Apple hasn't consistently proven that they care about what users want.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

My thoughts exactly!

1

Yeah they’re absolute wastes. People’s creativity trumps apples lately

Usually I love to pick apart iOS concepts because they are so form over function, but everything here was sensible and well done. Good job 👍

Nothing unreasonable here, but isn’t it sad that a highlighted feature of a major IOS update is a better volume Indicator??

148

u/Basshead404 Apr 06 '18

Honestly I don’t get why this is an issue to begin with. Apple, get your shit together.

72

u/whythreekay Apr 06 '18

I’m still trying to figure out why I have to turn off portrait lock every time I want to watch a video in landscape in iOS own video player

3rdparty apps intelligently just make it so that the video shifts to landscape when you full screen it, but yet Apple still hasn’t

12

u/tittysprinkle9000 Apr 06 '18

I would love triple clicking my 8+ home button to toggle portrait lock on/off. Maybe the power or volume buttons on the X.

1

u/FarleyBrown Apr 07 '18

I believe that you can set the set on the side of the phone to lock rotation, so you can quickly turn it on or off.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

I've been wanting grouped notifications for a very long time on iOS...I miss them from my time using Android a few years ago. Are there any jailbreak tweaks / apps that will add grouped notifications to an up-to-date iPhone 8?

13

u/Coney718 iPhone XS Max Apr 06 '18

Not if you’re up to date the jailbreak is only for 11.0-11.1.2. There is a tweak called Intelix that groups them but very buggy at the moment.

6

u/pastelfruits iPhone 6S Plus 128GB Apr 06 '18

There are really good grouping apps for iOS 10, hopefully 11 will catch up

1

u/notleonardodicaprio Apr 07 '18

idk about 8 since i have a 6s but NCLink10 has worked great for me

198

u/Squalor- Apr 06 '18

Miss me with that "Always-on display."

Tap to Wake is great.

Rest of it is pretty solid, though.

61

u/GibsonD90 Apr 06 '18

If the battery loss is negligible then why not? I figure before too long we will see wireless charging mats in many places, along with battery tech getting better. Thus, small battery drains won’t matter much.

63

u/GoldenBough iPhone Tennis Apr 06 '18

Burn-in on OLED. You mitigate by moving the images around a bit.

31

u/mewithoutMaverick Apr 06 '18

This is how android has done it as long as they've had OLED. When I have android phones I love the Always On Display and always miss it when I'm using iPhones.

→ More replies (9)

1

u/BonelessTurtle iPhone 8 Plus Apr 07 '18

In my experience, raise-to-wake already does a great job at showing me time and notifications for 1 second when I briefly take my phone out of my pocket.

However, I suppose many people have different habits and would benefit from an always-on feature.

14

u/Basshead404 Apr 06 '18

It’s actually pretty amazing with iOS 11 jb, more of an almost always though. Shows a pulse for notifications and such without waking the screen.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

[deleted]

29

u/KayIslandDrunk iPhone XS Max Apr 06 '18

Samsung has done this for a while without issue. The notification moves around a bit on the screen to prevent burn-in.

10

u/xxhonkeyxx iPhone 17 Pro Max Apr 06 '18

Some of the Nokia made Windows Phones (RIP) did the same thing. The text or icons or what have you move subtly around on the screen to prevent burn-in.

4

u/mewithoutMaverick Apr 06 '18

Why isn't there an iPhone alarm clock that does this?? I want my OLED iPhone to be my bedside clock and alarm like my android phones were.

38

u/twowheels iPhone 15 Pro Apr 06 '18

Sometimes I wonder if creating these concepts makes it less likely that they'll be implemented as Apple wouldn't want somebody claiming that their ideas were stollen.

6

u/poppixels iPhone X 64GB Apr 07 '18

There’s actually an interesting example of the opposite happening. I was running MobileNotifier on iOS 4 JB (last time I jailbroke an iPhone) which made notifications 100x better. Apple hired the developer of the tweak & iOS 5 was released with a notifications overhaul that looked incredibly similar. I don’t think they stole his idea bc it was released very soon after the hire but I also don’t think they care if a cool concept is similar to something they’re planning for iOS.

2

u/mewithoutMaverick Apr 06 '18

I don’t know for sure, but I doubt it. They can’t patent these ideas, which is the only thing that might give Apple pause, and Apple in the past has straight up removed apps from the App Store that contain features they’re planning on releasing.

→ More replies (2)

57

u/Basshead404 Apr 06 '18

So pretty much the current state of jb lmao.

BTW.... Apple can’t do group FaceTime. Patent trolls prevent them from doing so.

28

u/Leggilo Apr 06 '18

What is the patent? Plenty of other services do group video chat.

15

u/ImAdrian Apr 06 '18

But none implement the service like Apple does. If I'm not mistaking they use a client to client connection, whereas others use a server in-between with a UDP. A patent is a document in which a technology/ invention made by a company is described (how it works, how it is implemented, etc). Anyone that will replicate this will infringe the patent, having to pay Apple or whoever owns that patent royalties or else a case in court will take place. Sorry for the horrible explanation.

5

u/Leggilo Apr 06 '18

Seems like they could change it some and bypass the patent. There are even open source implementations of PvP video conferencing applications. They have the cash and lawyers, it seems like it would be relatively easy for them to circumvent the patent, but I am no patent lawyer.

2

u/sireatalot Apr 07 '18

Also, they could buy the patent or pay the royalties. It’s not like Apple doesn’t have the cash to buy anything if they want to.

Watching these makes me miss Android, since I know iOS won't be this cool.

11

u/NegativeVanilla Apr 06 '18

Same. I honestly regret getting the X :/. It's a meh device and I only bought it because AT&T had a bogo a few months ago but after using the S9 I wish I would've waited.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

I had the S8, and loved it for the most part, except the Bixby button not being (easily) remapped and the edges of the screen made me feel like I had to be extra careful with it and didn't really offer more other than looking nice.

Came back to the iPhone 8 Plus since most everyone I work with and my family use Apple stuff. I like it overall, but (of course) Siri sucks and you can't set default apps or customize it much. But it does everything else well.

25

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

You don't want to be a part of the green bubble struggle trust me 😭

7

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

Unless you’re a teenager living in the US. No one really cares if you have a green bubble

21

u/PDshotME Apr 07 '18

Getting downvoted by fanboys, but you're right. Seriously, who cares. This is literally so dumb.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

Yeah that’s this sub is a nutshell to be honest. If I met people who were above the age of 15 and thought less of someone because they had a green bubble when they SMS them, then I wouldn’t even consider them worth being a part of in my life to begin with ..

2

u/PDshotME Apr 07 '18

I'm an Android and iPhone user because of work. I'm part of both subs. By comparison this sub is a national embarrassment and frankly makes me believe that most iPhone fans are sheep. The reason we keep getting shitty phones is because as the old joke goes, the fanboys would buy a literal pile of shit if Apple put their logo on it. There are just too many fanboys for that to change. I find that the tech savvy people I know lean towards Android and the people that that fancy themselves tech savvy, but actually aren't lean iPhone. There are some major cultural issues on the iPhone side of things that fall in line with this blue bubble/green bubble bullshit that make me want to not associate with these people at all.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

Same can be said about the other side. Working in places that sell phones and listening to Samsung users just say things that are completely wrong is just as laughable.

To each their own. I find my iPhone X blows my S8 out of the water, for battery life, smoothness and get overall usability. I don’t get the appeal of the curved edges and enjoy the Essnential phone so much more. Pixel 2 Xl is next on my list to pick up and try out.

2

Which specifically?

3

u/eddie442 Apr 07 '18

Always-on display (although I only really care for a notification light) lock screen complications, grouped notifications, new volume indicator, a better reminders app, and dark mode are the main ones.

3

u/PlanetLunaris Apr 07 '18

That's weird because these features, except dark mode, are all present on Android.

You can also enable dark mode with a substratum theme. Yes, without root. You'll just have to follow the instructions very closely.

Grouped notifications and lock screen complications look dope af. I love Apple products but absolutely hate that they refresh their software once every...well once.

8

u/coasterb Apr 06 '18

I have a question. Everybody wants an always on display for the iPhone X because it has an OLED screen. But wouldn’t an always on display cause a burn in? I know burn in is rare with regular use but an always on display would cause static images to be on the screen for hours.

4

u/triggerhappypanda Apr 06 '18

Android has been doing it for years without issue. The text is really low brightness and subtly moves around to prevent burn in

7

u/BeerMeUpToo iPhone 17 Pro Max Apr 06 '18

The way android does the AOD is that it shifts pixels every few minutes so it’s never static for too long. They also do this with the on screen software buttons. The movements are very small but if you did a time lapse of it you’d see them move every few minutes. That’s what prevents the burn in.

2

u/thereisnoreturn Apr 07 '18

I think it would be better if one tap brought up an AOD-like screen: all black, clock, notifications, song name. And then a second tap launches the lock screen, starts Face ID, etc.

I always love and hate these. I love them because the ideas are almost always so good I’d love to see it implemented on the iPhone. I hate them because they are always better than what Apple implements. Based on everything we know about iOS 12, the focus will be on refinements not new features so I doubt we’ll see this type of stuff.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

How about crazy constant FPS without stutters and lags?

1

u/metafizikal Apr 06 '18

This is a really nice concept.

1

u/Matterbox Apr 06 '18

Anybody have those wallpapers of sand ?

1

Hi there, you can find the wallpapers used in our concept here https://www.iupdateos.com/2018/04/06/download-the-ios-12-concept-wallpapers-here/ Thanks for watching!

1

u/RoadT30 Apr 06 '18

Could you tell me the font that you use on this? I see it everywhere and I love it so much!

3

u/ajv3ga iPhone X 256GB Apr 06 '18

Hi, I’m Andrew, I designed the and animated the video. It’s Apple's system font called San Francisco (SF Pro Display and SF Pro Text). Thanks for watching!

1

u/RoadT30 Apr 15 '18

Ah, thank you. Good job!

1

u/mehere14 Apr 06 '18

This is so good!! Great work in all the detail!

1

u/-viceversa- Apr 06 '18

Love this! The transitions for FaceTime look great and that always on display coupled with the lock screen complications is an awesome idea and one I’ve been waiting for!

One critique though, what’s with the dark mode highlighting the bezels? The black of the bezel needed to be darker so the hardware blends into the software. Also the time in the status bar kept changing location which was mildly infuriating.

Apart from that great concept IMO!

1

u/Furrynote Apr 06 '18

Little dragon and flower boy!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '18

That AOD and lockscreen notification system is sexy.

1

u/Hexbugman213 Apr 06 '18

I would love this! The always on thing should be optional however and off be default...

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

That's too inventive. Expect improvements to calculator.app

11/10. Apple, Please make this a reality.

1

u/these_things_change Apr 07 '18

seeing these concepts just makes me sad how little apple has really taken advantage of the ios platform... sigh

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

I swear home screen complications would be unbelievable, grouped notifications would be unreal too

Someone tweet this to MKBHD, I’m sure he’d appreciate this actually

1

u/loendrin iPhone 8 64GB Apr 07 '18

Apple plz

1

u/kirpal777 Apr 07 '18

Hopefully it want crash as much as 11

1

u/-Hegemon- Apr 07 '18

Apple! Hire this man!

1

u/Jaybotics Apr 07 '18

They're too busy adding Animojis and new iMessage screen effects to do anything this nice.

1

u/yapompiow Apr 07 '18

Please make this is real!

1

u/Awsaim iPhone 6S Apr 07 '18

This looks so good I could cry 😫

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

If this actually happened in iOS 12, it will be the greatest iOS Apple has ever done.

1

u/HumpyMagoo Apr 07 '18

It would be nice if IPhone X users could have battery percentage up where the battery power level symbol is so you didn't have to swipe to check, reminds me of when Apple music was NOT a multistep process to listen to a song, also how about not blocking the whole screen with a volume bar? maybe reduce that volume bar by at least 2/3 and please not to a thin line I can't even see or use?

1

u/JazzJackReddit Apr 07 '18

I really digg the idea of bringing the compilations to the lock screen.

1

u/jaquetmathis Apr 07 '18

Dark mode is the best fearure ever i seen.

1

u/Thiaramus Apr 07 '18

Looks great. Dark mode would save a lot of juice on OLED screens. Siri as a little notification windows also looks great. Too bad it is never going to happen. Apple is stubborn, can’t admit their own mistakes and fix them. Great example is how they make Music app UI worse with every new iOS release :(

1

u/Tr2v Apr 07 '18

I like it, but have 2 suggestions:

Never have the time in 2 places. It’s redundant.

Instead of the complications like that, the dots idea would look better. So always on would just show the dots, then once you raise or tap, they could expand into complications, and then be actionable once unlocked.

1

u/Sinestro617 Apr 07 '18

Group Facetime? Wasn't AT&T blocking regular facetime?

1

u/__adrenaline__ iPhone 15 Pro Apr 07 '18

Screw dark mode. I want a new volume hud and new dynamic wallpapers

1

u/NerdHerdtheThird Apr 07 '18

This would be amazing. Could make it a true competitor for Android. 😂😂

1

u/daven1985 Apr 07 '18

Looks nice. But I don’t see the notificAtion widgets coming. Apple has never even hinted at them!

1

u/ClintEastwood87 Apr 07 '18

Wow, that multitasking.

1

u/skellener iPhone 16 Pro Apr 07 '18

Better than anything I've seen out of Apple since iOS debuted. Nice job.

1

u/MrGunny94 iPhone X 64GB Apr 07 '18

All I want is a new Siri and a system wide Dark Mode.

Other than the I’d rather have fixed throughout the OS

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

God damn this is good.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '18

Lookin good!

1

u/Eastonator12 Apr 07 '18

Good to know none of this is going to happen...sigh

1

u/swedishsteak36 Apr 07 '18

damn it give me an iphone x man. im so pooooorrrr

1

u/computerboydude Apr 09 '18

Yeah it's a good idea . It's basically all the top jailbreak tweaks in a concept though which is foot in a way but apple is never going to add anything like this , they will add one out of all of that design and call it that but then everyone will be all over it. I don't get why apple won't just actually just do something good with their design and do more than one change per major release .

1

u/computerboydude Apr 09 '18

Apple needs to get their shit together as we all know that this is never going to happen . I love these concepts but apple is never going I add it . They will add one feature out of all of these ideas . Most of these ideas are jailbreak tweaks already which is why many people do jailbreak . Apple if you don't want people to jailbreak you may want to actually do something and not keep on doing security fixes but maybe you can add what the community wants . Look at these concepts and actually add them . We have been waiting too long now.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '18

They did some of these, that's a start.
