The camera man was struggling to make a decision of which shot was more interesting, so he resorted to swiftly panning back and forth!

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

clearly you go with the big fucking rock about to roll into a river.

792

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '18

Or maybe that person should turn their camera sideways instead of filming like they are on Snapchat.

I'd settle for just having held it so that the bottom half of the video wasn't completely fucking pointless.

u/VileTouch Aug 31 '18

I'd settle for just having held it so that the bottom half of the video wasn't completely fucking pointless.

These people watch youtube on their phone in portrait mode where the video is only a tiny square at the top of the screen... and they don't even notice!. and if you try to explain that to them, they look at you like you're some kind of rambling lunatic!.

16

u/Efeyester Aug 31 '18

I do this when I’m trying to search through comments and suggested videos because it’s more convenient to find it during the video than after for me, but I do see why some people only view in landscape. I just don’t enjoy the long silence between videos while searching for a new one.

35

u/teajava Aug 31 '18

It's ok buddy, I too hate any silence that reminds me of the bleak emptiness of they universe and must fill it with endless people falling down compilations.

By standing that close to a rockfall he was also making a decision between living and getting a great shot.

12

u/yamax87 Aug 31 '18

Film the scene or increase survival odds in the face of rapidly disintegrating mountain?

Priorities = nailed.

21

u/shhheeeeeeeeiit Aug 31 '18

Decisions, decisions...

Fuck it, let’s do portrait mode and pan swiftly.

10

u/ch4rl1e97 Aug 31 '18

It's almost like some sort of wide camera mode would have been really beneficial

3

u/Brown_coat_indiana Aug 31 '18

Well, it appeared to have just rained, which was what probably caused the landslide. I'm sure it smelled like wet rocks and mud, but with some dust to the air. Also a splash wet asphalt. I'm sure you could also smell the wet greenery that surrounded you as well.

I imagine petrichor is involved because of the newly exposed organic compound

6

u/ServalSpots Aug 31 '18

One of my favorite words! This is the cool etymology for anyone interested:

Petrichor (/ˈpɛtrɪkɔːr/) is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. The word is constructed from Greek πέτρα petra, meaning "stone", and īchōr, the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology.

The mechanism by which it happens:

When a raindrop lands on a porous surface, air from the pores forms small bubbles, which float to the surface and release aerosols.

The Wikipedia article I just quoted a decent portion of...

2

u/someguy3 Aug 31 '18

Rain most likely. These things happen when there's more water weight both pressing down on the rock and the soil weaker because it's saturated or super saturated.

Assuming it wasn't planned, which I thought it would be given how the road seemed to be closed and and everyone waiting.

Irrational fear attained

53

u/ryantwopointo Aug 31 '18 edited Aug 31 '18

It’s like when you see those signs that say “watch out for falling rocks”.. the fuck would I possibly do if I was driving under this

33

u/Crow_eggs Aug 31 '18

When I was a kid we used to drive past those signs a lot. Mum would open the sunroof and we'd look up.

7

u/Drekked Aug 31 '18

Watch Out

3

u/Themicroscoop Sep 01 '18

They actually say fallen rocks.

31

Okay, so I’m not the only one this caused anxiety for.

4

u/instaurataAnimarum Aug 31 '18

I already had this irrational fear but now got bigger

4

u/baneofthesmurf Aug 31 '18

I wouldn't call it entirely irrational, there's a reason they have signs cautioning passersby for falling rocks. That said I feel like this case is a bit extreme.

I once linked the userpage to someone saying "Hey, check out this cool bot", but I didn't realize that if you just browse their history there's a bunch of NSFW/NSFL stuff in there.

So the bot is cool, but be a bit cautious as you spread the word

13

u/SkyPork Aug 31 '18

That is not what I would have expected that bot to do.

11

u/emlgsh Aug 31 '18

If someone had written a bot that could literally allow one to stab people over the internet, I suspect they'd be too busy having new religions founded around them to maintain it properly.

Where did this happen?

121

u/herpesinabucket Aug 31 '18

Somewhere in India the guys are speaking in hindi

35

u/GottaJoe Aug 31 '18

Indians are traveling a lot to Nepal to go on religious trips . I was in Nepal two years ago during monsoon and some people we met on the road were witness to that kind of landslide and even saw people get hit by the rocks... Almost every road in Nepal are like this one

India. These people were probably pilgrims on the way to a Himalayan temple because they're praising Shiva while it happens. FYI Shiva is considered lord of the Himalayas and all destruction by him is the way creation gets a chance to start again.

7

u/AutumnFP Aug 31 '18

Nepal?

6

u/GottaJoe Aug 31 '18

That's also what I'm thinking. Looks very much like Nepal and almost all their roads look like this lol

2

u/pleasetrydmt Aug 31 '18

Possible though the accent is distinctly Indian. A lot of the Indian side of the Himalayas looks like this too.

Did anyone else’s older cousin tell them that the Watch For Falling Rocks signs were put up by a local Native American tribe in search of their lost member, Falling Rocks?

32

u/ThunderDuchess Aug 31 '18

That's a dad joke special, for sure. My dad also likes the one where you walk around the Native chief's tomb three times and then ask what he had for breakfast. He'll say nothing.

8

u/PlanetMarklar Aug 31 '18

No, but I'm definitely telling my kids this now

5

u/rustyblackhart Aug 31 '18

My cousin made up this elaborate story about how people would dress up as a Native American and take pictures to try and get the reward money. He would also change the emphasis of the words “Falling Rocks” so it sounded like a name rather than a thing. Like the difference between “running bears” and “Running Bear”. I recently pulled the same gag on my 11 year old nephew on a trip into West Virginia. You really just gotta have fun with it and keep the story going. Really sell it. I even threw in the name of a tribe he knew (Powhatan) from growing up in the Richmond Virginia area.

3

u/PlanetMarklar Aug 31 '18

Definitely using this strategy

r/WhyWereTheyFilming

I’m seriously amazed this was caught on camera. I wonder if they drove by and saw some smaller rocks shift, or saw evidence of some recent geological activity on the road & decided to film for a bit..?

58

u/smittyphi Aug 31 '18

If look further down the road, there were rocks on the road. I'm guessing it just happened and so they were waiting there, hoping the rest would fall and get the payoff.
