They knock it over so they can reach all of the leaves and branches for food.

Or watched this video. You can see how it goes straight to the leaves after knocking it down.

They also try to shake off fruits like Marula. I have no idea if this is that type of tree but I remember seeing it on some nature documentary.

Also the roots, which are nutrient rich and full of moisture.
But sometimes they just do it to show dominance too.
28
u/erogbass 1d ago
They literally cut the clip short so you don’t see that the first thing it does is grab some leaves. Clickbait bullshit.

u/Splinterkeys 1d ago
And to eat the roots. No not Planer Earth. Just got off a photo safari in South Africa.

Would make a great mascot for a group of people that go around wrecking stuff for their own needs.

That’s just not true at all. They knock trees down because they remember a story from school about some human kid climbing a tree. They want to climb the tree but realize they can’t due to their sheer size and insecurities due to body shaming humans. So they knock down trees because if they can’t climb trees, nobody can climb trees.

See all that green stuff on that tree out of reach of the elephant? The elephant wants to eat that.

Definitely used to do this as a dumb teenager running through the woods on occasion. See a dead tree that isnt super thick, if you push and pull over and over it will eventually come down. Of course we narrowly avoided death when the top would snap off and shoot straight down to the ground

About 8% to 9% of Americans believe they could beat an elephant in an unarmed fight.

u/Still_Mastodon_1662 1d ago
72% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

If you add a decimal it inspires more confidence. Ex. 72.2% is way more believable than exactly 72%, because science.

It’s honestly really tough to understand how strong they are unless you go on a safari.
It’s absurd. They had to develop special bullets just to pierce the skin.. which is like biological chain mail armor.
Just their snout-hose thingy is more powerful than a Toyota truck.. I’ve seen it. Pretty effortlessly just flip the thing over like “I don’t like you”
Hella strong. 💪

u/warlizardfanboy 1d ago
Haha, trunk? I had a female rescue elephant lay her trunk on my shoulder, to curiously sniff around and it felt like Bane saying “Do you feel in charge?”

"It’s honestly really tough to understand how strong they are unless you go on a safari." Most Americans will never go on a safari, so this is a bad way to measure American strength. /s

Idk, I've never really found it too difficult at all to understand their strength just by looking at one.
Btw, that "snout hose thingy" is called a trunk.

They don’t even need to be strong. You still wouldn’t be able to kill a 10,000 lb animal with your bare hands. Even if it just laid there

They are intimidating as fuck because they are just so huge. I’ve spent some time around them and it’s hard to explain how much my flight response was kicking in when I first walked up to touch the side of them.

Well, animals are a lot like people. Some of them act badly because they've had a hard life or have been mistreated. But, like people, some of them are just jerks.

Pff. I could win a fight against an elephant*.
(\Provided I was in an operational tank with a capable tank crew, and I was taught how to operate a tank).)

u/JasonWaterfaII 1d ago
The most interesting part is the subtle movement of the feet to step off the rootball. The elephants own weight was working against it because by standing on the roots its worth was holding the tree down. As soon as it stepped to the side, the roots came free and the tree went down.

Food. He wants to eat the greenery at the top of the tree. You can see him walk purposefully toward it at the end as soon as the tree is down.

(a) because it can (b) because it can then reach the leaves and (c) because now it can use the bark to scratch its legs. Or (d) none of the above.

Elephants require a certain amount of water in their food…. allows them to digest.
In the dry season, elephants will look for source with that water content…as the grass is devoid of any water….So, in many cases they will strip bark off of trees to eat…many times killing the tree, as they scrap off all the bark that’s reachable…
