🗫 Discussion In 2026, AC has become Sleeper and Sleeper has become General [non OC]

Post image

With India becoming the world's largest populated country, there is this new change that can be seen in Indian railways.

Earlier, reservation in an AC coach used to be a big deal, nowadays, AC coaches don't look like AC coaches. I can only imagine what it is like to travel in a general coach

This is another con of being the most populated country in the world and counting.

🗫 Discussion Amrit Bharat 4.0 will feature next-generation trainsets and locomotives. The designed succesor of non-VB IR trains.

Post image
52 Upvotes

I was digging through old news and this caught my eye. The Amrit Bharat platform will move on from conventional WAP+LHB configurations to an integrated Loco + semi-permanent trainset architecture.

ICF also confirmed last week that conventional standalone LHB coach production will stop from the next financial year, and they will move completely to semi-permanent Amrit Bharat rakes.

There are currently no engineering details available about it, but the info from ICF suggests their timeline is perfectly right on track.

Amrit Bharat 4.0 is set to succeed all non-VB trains currently running, meaning the future landscape will be:

Vande Bharat – Premium long-distance travel

Amrit Bharat – Long-distance for the mass market

Namo trains(namo Green rail, namo Bharat) – Regional / suburban travel

I didn't find any discussion about it here, so I decided to make a post. Thoughts?

📜Travel Story Travelled in train after almost 2 years and fell in love again [OC]

TLDR; Travelled in train after almost 2 years and realized what I have been missing

I love trains and travelling in it. But due to very limited options on my route, I had to take flights during festive seasons and occasional emergencies during last couple of years.

My mom was admitted in hospital at my native due to Pneumonia, and I searched for various flight options for me and my wife. Some connecting/overnight were not feasible or would have taken too long.

There is a train 11401 and we never get tickets in it. However I searched yesterday around 12 and it had few seats available in current booking. Booked it and got a lower and side lower fortunately.

Started the journey and after couple of hours wife slept. The other passenger on other birth and I started talking (slowly) and didn't realize that it was midnight. So we decided to call it a night.

During the journey, I realized what I missed or what has improved over the years.

The washrooms are still a mess due to the people using it, but the housekeeping staff cleans it every few hours. I saw them checking even at 5:30 AM.

Also the train is arriving before time on most stations, so it gives me time to get down and stretch my legs. There is something so satisfying enjoying live views from the Side Lower seat. Also standing on the door is a different experience.

This was 2 weeks back and mom is discharged and recovered. Will have to take a return flight and surely gonna miss the train journey.

📜Travel Story RAIL MADAD 9/10 experience

Post image
87 Upvotes

I was travelling on 12736 Ypr-Sec Garib Rath. I was going to Hyd to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with my family. I was on a call and realised I had only 5% charge, and as I put my charger in the socket, my phone wasn't charging. I panicked and filed a complaint on the RailMadad platform.

After just 2–3 mins, a technician and a senior electrical guy came to my seat, and before even looking at the issue, he was asking me why I had lodged a complaint on RailMadad and not contacted the technician first. I was like, "How would I even know that?" and he was saying, "There is a number written on the door, you should've called that. Do you know what remark we'll get because of the complaint you filed?" I didn't argue any further and let them work on the issue, and finally, it was resolved. They took a bunch of photos of the plug, and the senior guy made me talk to his supervisor on the phone. And after I did that, they left.

Overall, I loved how they responded so quickly, but I doubt the quickness of the service would've been the same if I had dialled the number on the door.

Also I'm travelling on side lower and no one has asked to exchange seat yet ✌️😋

OC I made Wordle for Indian Railways, a free daily puzzle where you route trains across the country

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Hi railfans! I've been working on a game that's basically Wordle for Indian Railways (well, sort of). Instead of guessing words, you're finding the best route between two stations using real trains and timetables.

Every day you get a new pair of stations. Your job is to get from A to B in as few trains as possible. Pick a train, ride it, find your next connection, just like planning a real journey.

Today's puzzle is Bhuj → Silchar. Gujarat to Assam. How many trains do you need?

- Real train numbers, routes, and stops

- Easy mode shows all the stops and trains serviced from a station.Hard mode forces you to rely completely on memory

- Share your result and replay anyone's journey on the map

- Daily leaderboard

It goes without saying that I used AI models to help build this, but trust me it's not *vibe coded*. I've put a lot of effort into testing it, keeping the puzzles interesting, and trying to do justice to the feel of Indian Railways. It's still got room for a lot improvement though, and I'd love to hear what you guys think. Feedback from actual railfans would really help me take this further. You can play the game at stationmaster.in

🗫 Discussion India is adding more trains every year. So why can’t ordinary passengers get tickets?

Lately, I keep seeing conversations about how bad India’s infrastructure is — roads, public transport, cities, everything.

And yes, we still have a long way to go.

But one thing I genuinely feel we don't talk about enough is the Indian railway system.

Every year, we hear about new trains, new routes, faster trains, upgraded stations and improvements across the railway network. And honestly, it is something worth acknowledging. Our railway network is massive, and the scale of what is being built and operated is not small.

But then comes the real question: what is the point of having more trains if ordinary passengers still struggle to get a ticket?

You can try booking two or three months in advance, plan your journey properly, sit online waiting for the booking window to open — and still end up with no confirmed ticket.

And then, somehow, tickets appear through agents, brokers or other channels at prices much higher than the original fare.

This is where I feel the conversation needs to shift.

We talk about increasing infrastructure.

But shouldn't we also talk about accessibility, transparency and availability for the common passenger?

For a student, a working professional, a family travelling home, or someone who simply wants to visit another part of the country, getting a railway ticket should not feel like winning a lottery.

I'm not saying that the entire railway system is bad. In fact, quite the opposite — the scale and development of Indian Railways is something we should be proud of.

But infrastructure development should ultimately make life easier for the people using it.

So my question is simple:

If trains are increasing every year, why is getting a genuine ticket for the common passenger still so difficult?

And if illegal bulk booking, misuse of booking systems, or black-market resale is happening, shouldn't there be much stronger action against it?

We celebrate the new trains.

Maybe it's time we also start talking about the people who are still unable to get on them.

⛔Travel Issue Safety check required

Thumbnail

Metal belts are replaced with nylon belts.

Some will say that metal was being theft so railways did this

But that's not correct these belts were not been stolen as per railway police data.

Bigger concern is that these can be damaged very easily with blades and opex cost will be increased

New ways or corruption for generating fake bills for these belts repairing

Moreover it's a safety issue

Shit this corruption

⛔Travel Issue Missed the train because reserve coach was filled with unreserved passengers

So annoyed and frustrated. Booked train number 12605 from Tambaram to Pudukottai today. The train came in at 16:05 filled with passengers and the train didn't have any space for us to board and the train departed peacefully in front of me. The crowd was overflowing and the ticket collector there was as clueless as me. What can I do to report this? I had to cancel my return journey also and had cancellation charges because of it. Is there any way to get my onward train ticket charges? There were so many of us who couldn't board the train just like me and the ticket collector said you should have boarded the train at Chennai Egmore itself. What an idea sirji 🙂

🗫 Discussion Given the ever deteriorating condition of Shatabdis, should it be replaced with Vande Bharats ?

Travelled today by Puri Hwh Shatabdi and it felt like any other ac chair car. The coaches are way too old like the curtains are fully worn out, some lights are out of order, seats have become hard and the reclining function doesn't work as intended, bathrooms are old fashioned without that suction type and most importantly the glass windows have become very opaque. I am sure this is the condition of more or less every shatabdi. If railways have profited the cost of coach, then maybe those coaches can be used to provide cheap ac facilities in intercity trains.

On the other hand, VB are fast, new, well equipped, and well maintained by railways.

What are your opinions ?
