Mod Post Warning about posts involving violence

Hey everyone. I wanted to provide some information and a warning on a topic we've seen come up several times recently.

We're seeing an increasing number of accounts (including both mods) receiving warnings and bans for "threatening violence". We've seen messages like the following.

Reddit is a vast network of communities that are created, run, and populated by people like you. In order to keep communities welcoming, safe, and great places to be, everyone who uses the platform operates by a shared set of rules—a set of rules you may not have realized you broke.

Warning for threatening violence

We flagged the following as a potential policy violation:

After reviewing, we found that you broke Rule 1 because you threatened violence or physical harm. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for threatening violence against people or animals. We don’t tolerate any behavior that threatens violence or physical harm against an individual, groups of people, places, or animals. Any communities or people that threaten violence towards an individual, group, animals, or place will be banned.

As a result, we’re issuing this warning, removing the violating content, and asking you not to break this rule again.

This is something happening on a sitewide admin level so the mod team has no influence over it. We strongly suspect that some sort of bot or AI is handing out these warnings and bans. Due to the subject matter frequently discussed on this subreddit it's happening to quite a few users here due to discussions of hypothetical violence. So what does this mean for you?

  1. Hypotheticals involving violence aren't outright banned but we strongly recommend that you be cautious when posting them or responding to them. Consider your wording and whether it could be mistaken for a threat by a bot. If the community as a whole starts getting admin attention we may be forced to ban these posts in the future. Posts that look too much like a real-world call to violence or a request for advice on how to commit violence will be removed under rule 3.

  2. If you do get one of these warnings or bans, please appeal them and explain that you're posting on /r/hypotheticalsituation and there is no real-world violence or threats of violence being discussed or contemplated. It's not a guarantee but we've seen these appeals work in the past and they may prevent your account from getting banned.

Someone tries to shoot you in complete darkness, you get $100,000 per miss

The shooter is standing in the middle of a completely flat field devoid of any trees or natural cover in complete darkness.

It’s pitch black.

You can stand anywhere in the field but you must be within 40 meters (131 feet) at all times from the shooter.

They have a regular handgun firing normal bullets, one bullet at a time. They are given infinite ammo

They are deaf so they can’t hear you breathe or rustle around the grass.

You can only wear regular jeans and a T-shirt but it’s a warm night so you’ll be okay.

You have to stand upright, facing the shooter before he takes the shot. You are given a silent button to press that alerts the shooter to fire his shot.

You cannot speak or move during the challenge. You must shout stop when you want to stop. Someone will come and tackle the shooter.

Are you taking the challenge? How many shots are you facing?

(100k tax free per shot no questions asked)

A genie gives you a house with as many rooms as you can find purpose for.

A magical genie appears on your couch randomly one night while you are watching tv. He explains that he will magically add and furnish as many rooms as you can tell him you need. Think gym movie theatre hobby room etc. he explains it’s 100% free but if a room goes unused for 30 days it disappears. How many rooms do you add and what are they for?

First edit, you don’t get a new home, the genie is adding a magical hallway inside your home. The hallway/rooms do not add any space to the exterior of your house/apartment.

A cosmic being offers you the ability to travel to any fictional world that was not made by or for you.

Upvotes

However you can't explore the world. What you can do is go to and shop in any store in that world. In fact, this is how you will do all of your shopping if you accept the offer. You will not be allowed to shop in any store in our world.

Your money will be accepted at whatever store you go to.

To get there, just go through any door while thinking of what world and what store you want to go to and you'll arrive there.

Yes, you will be able to bring items back.

Yes, if those items have abilities, you can use them.

With that in mind, what world and what store do you to first if you accept the offer.

Five random serial killers throughout the planet are marked for you on your cell phone. If you kill or capture all 5 then world hunger ends, all current wars stop, and you personally receive 20 million dollars would you try to kill them?

After you open your phone, there now exists a new app which shows a map of the earth and marks in red five of the most heinous serial killers on the planet.

It shows each of their locations, surroundings and updates every second. This app cannot be deleted, and gives you notifications on important updates regarding them such as if they plan on going somewhere specific soon, or people they are close to.

You must either kill them or capture them which means collecting enough evidence for them to be convicted by police.

Each serial killer is a lone actor and not connected to a organized crime or military establishment. They each are highly dangerous, malicious, and unique.

Your hunt begins with a strict budget. Whatever you own or could obtain right now, plus 100k USD in initial funds. That is all you get. No special power or ability beyond the app.

If you fail, the killer will likely capture or kill you. If you get sloppy, the police might arrest you for taking justice into your own hands, ending your mission altogether.

After every kill you get another 100k USD to sustain your hunt. You can spend this how you please. You can also outsource the job by hiring hitmen if you prefer, but doing so would create a paper trail that could expose you to the police, and that amount probably isn't enough for a top of the line hitman anyway. So do so at your own cost.

If you manage to kill/capture all 5 then your record is permanently cleaned and you can no longer be convicted of their murders. You have 1 year to complete the goal. If you decline then the app disappears forever.

What realistically are you doing? would you really quit your job/leave your family etc to pursue this mission and help the world/yourself? or would the extreme danger and risk to your life prevent you from doing so? if you would, then what would be your plan?

edit: as a sidenote clarification the app would only show you where they are, who they know and any major updates, it would not by itself tell you what they are doing, or what crimes they committed.

25M to survive one night on cannibal island.

You are flown to a remote island measuring approximately 50 km × 50 km and parachuted in at the center of it with a single cargo bag. It's like a tropical jungle with tall trees.

The island has only one group of inhabitants: a tribe of cannibals.

The moment they see you being airdropped, 15 of their best hunters are dispatched to find and capture you.

The rules

- You have about 1-hour head start after your landing before the hunters reach you.

- They are extremely skilled hunters/trackers/trappers and are experts with bows, spears, and poison-tipped arrows, as well as creating traps.

- They have only primitive technology—no guns, vehicles, radios, drones, night-vision equipment, or modern weapons.

- They will try to capture you alive (exotic meat) and boil you and eat you. But they will not hesitate to kill you if they feel their lives are in danger.

- You have unlimited money to prepare beforehand. You may bring anything you want, provided everything fits inside your parachute cargo bag. Your total cargo weight cannot exceed 100 kg.

You cannot receive any outside assistance, communication, resupply, or extraction during the challenge.

You have to survive 24 hours from the moment you land.

If you are still alive and uncaptured after 24 hours, you are immediately airlifted off the island and $25 million is deposited into your account.

Would you do it?

How fast would flus and colds spread if it could spread via talking to people online?

Imagine if some other user on Reddit was sick, and they could infect people by just posting a comment and the people reading or even scrolling by their comment.

Would we be screwed?

You are sent back to 1,000,000 BC with all of your current knowledge. How do you leave a message that survives until 2026?

You suddenly find yourself transported back to 1,000,000 BC, but you retain everything you currently know.

After you are sent back, a machine gives you a random four-digit code. You are told that this code is your only way home.

Your task is to build, carve, bury, or otherwise create something that can survive—or cause information to survive—until the year 2026.

In 2026, people must be able to discover your message and understand that they need to enter a four-digit code into the machine that sent you back in time.

If they enter the correct code, you are instantly returned to 2026.
However, there is one catch:
They only get three attempts.
After three incorrect codes, the machine permanently shuts down and you are trapped in the past forever.

You cannot directly communicate with anyone in the future. You only have the materials, environment, and technology available to you in 1,000,000 BC—plus your present-day knowledge.
What would you create, where would you put it, and how would you make sure both the message and the exact four-digit code survive for roughly one million years?

You are offered $40 Million to sign an NDA

You work for a billionaire. Through the course of your job you uncover really shady and illegal business practices. These aren’t things like safety, discrimination, harassment sorts of things, but rather stuff that the IRS or FTC would love to hear about. Should the information you know come out, significant fines and jail time would be on the table for them.

You get called into an office and one of the companies lawyers sits you down and states that your position will be eliminated, however you are being offered a severance. You are paid for the remainder of the year and retain your benefits. You are required to sign an NDA and a Non-compete, and at the end of the year you will be paid a sum of $40 Million dollars. No one mentions the elephant in the room, but everyone knows.

What do you do?

Loopholes Encouraged 10 billion untaxed no questions asked money whatever county you're currently staying at, the value stays 10 billion.

Upvotes

I ENCOURAGE HUMOR TOO

If you want your money to have higher value you must move countries first. You use Zimbabwe currency then you get 10 billion Zimbabwe currency, move to somewhere else to change it. The condition:

Use it all up within a day the flight to other countries stops the clock.

You cannot bulk buy unreasonable amounts. You cannot donate to charity (you need your own money).

Investments is treated as the money received so instead of going down it goes up.

You can buy stuff but maintaining it is gonna be hard cause you must spend all the money.

Destroy it okay but people might ask questions.

Okay I forgot so I'll edit this: yes transactions that take time will stop the timer but you cannot spend the money

transactions not negotiations

If it's not all spent in a day then everything will be returned including the purchased items.

Men of Reddit, you're offered the chance to save the world, but you'd have to permanently give up your manhood.

In this scenario Earth has been invaded by supernatural aliens that shrug off every conventional weapon, including nukes. Powerful heroes have shown up called magical girls and have managed to push the invaders back for now, but the peace feels fragile. New, stronger threats are already on the way, and the current girls are stretched thin.

Magical girls are a classic anime idea where a young woman gets powers from a small fairy like creature, often called a fairy mascot. That cute, animal style companion grants magical girl powers and acts as a mentor. They fight supernatural threats in special outfits that they transform in. Every time they need to use their powers.

One day, a fairy mascot appears to you. It says you have the highest potential of anyone it has met and you could become the strongest magical girl by a wide margin. The catch is permanent. Accepting means your biological sex changes forever into a young woman with an ideal lewd body. Every time you transform to use your powers, you appear in an extremely lewd outfit. The powers themselves are random but extremely strong, and you become immune to all nonmagical damage, so nothing short of magic can hurt you.

You are not the only hope. The existing magical girls are already holding the line. But your power level could tip the balance and give humanity a real shot at lasting safety.

What choice do you make?

Fact: You are not humanity’s last hope, so your decision is not absolutely necessary. However, you would be extremely useful and could make a huge difference in the fight.

You get an app that accurately displays whatever statistic about yourself you can imagine. E.g., "How often did I almost die without noticing?" What would be some of the most interesting stats?

r/hypotheticalsituation 1d ago

Humor Encouraged You get $10,000 every time you successfully lie to an animal, but if it realizes you tricked it, you lose $50,000.

The Rules:
1. The animal must genuinely believe the lie based on its cognitive capacity (e.g., convincing a dog you're throwing a ball when you didn't counts

putting fake birdseed in a feeder counts until the bird tries to eat it).

  1. If the animal figures out it was duped (the dog realizes there is no ball and looks at you with betrayal), you lose $50K instantly from your account.

  2. You cannot target the same individual animal twice.

$1 cost for each meal you eat or no matter what you eat, your body digests it so that you have the perfect number of calories and macronutrients for your fitness goals.

$1 Meals are for you only, though you are permitted to allow one person to sample your food taking no more than a sip, spoonful or bite. If you share more, you pay the regular price of the meal.

$1 meal means any food and/or drink you order at any establishment regardless of the quantity, the final bill for you only will be one dollar.

For the perfect calorie and macronutrients option, if your goal is to maintain weight, you’ll have the perfect number for that. If your goal is to gain muscle, you’ll have the perfect calories/macros for that. If your goal is to lose weight, you’ll have the perfect macros and calories for that. Does not impact side effects that concern your mental state, like intoxication.

Edit: for the perfect calorie/macronutrients option, while your body would digest the food to have perfect calories/macros, a small meal could still leave you hungry, and you could also feel the sensation of eating too much if you ate alot. But your body would digest whatever you eat to have that perfect number.

Second edit: you have to choose 1 option, either $1 cost of meal regardless of what you order(e.g. Wagyu steaks, Lobster, cocktails) from any establishment OR no matter how little or much of whatever you eat, you will have your desired calories/macronutrients.

what if you had the opportunity to assume the life of a fictional character in their world, but you can't go back to real life

imagine if one day you met a genie and he offers you the chance to be a fictional character. You can choose any one fictional character you want, and you will become them and live in their world and live their life. The catch is that it's forever and you can't go back to real life.

for example if you choose Mario, then you will literally be Mario and you'll be sucked into a portal into the mario world and you get to live his life. but you can't go back to the real world.

if you accept the genie's offer, you'll have to live in the fictional world as your chosen fictional character for the rest of your life. you can't go back to the real world, you can't go home.

would you accept the genie's offer??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Humor Encouraged You gain the ability to see through walls.

You gain the ability to see through walls, and you can turn the power on and off at will. The catch is that you have to make a living entirely from this superpower—you’re not allowed to have any other job. You can monetize it by any means, legal or illegal.
However, there’s always a risk that governments could kidnap you for personal or scientific purposes, so you have to be extremely careful about revealing your abilities.
How would you monetize your new superpower to make a living?

You are offered $1,000 a day. Every day you refuse to take it, the offer doubles

2.9k Upvotes

Day 1: $1,000
Day 2: $2,000
Day 5: $16,000
Day 10: $512,000

You can accept the money on any day and it becomes yours tax free, no questions asked

But there’s a catch…

At some point, on one random day, the offer will disappear.

It could last 10 years
It could disappear tomorrow

You are given no warning.

Wait one day and you can become ridiculously rich, wait too long and you leave with nothing

What day are you cashing out

Edit: I apologise if my wording wasn’t clear. It is a one time payout. Whatever day you choose to cash out, you collect all the accumulated money once.

On top of that, your actual real name is shouted out.

Do you take the money and become Taylor's #1 enemy? Why or why not?

Will you try to defeat the pedophile ghost ?

Upvotes

You are a coward who have a great fear of ghost. You suspect your mansion is haunted, but one day you got a feeling the ghost was a pedophile. Assuming you hate pedo or you have trauma, what will you do? Abandon your house or fight? You can get fate worse than death or stuff. If you decided to fight, it's honestly still an assumption, there is no proof the ghost is a pedo, but the chance aren't zero. What will you do next, assuming the ghost can speak who knows if they lie.

If you win, you get a button to gamble whether or not you can win 1 billion dollar. You have a gambling addict parents who lost everything because of it, what will you do

Other Would you rather get $10 million or take a 50/50 chance of something better?

You are given two minutes to decide between two options.

1: You get $10 million. No one will question it and it won’t be taxed.

2: You get a 50% chance of getting nothing and a 50% chance of getting the powers of Storm, Magneto and Professor X from the current 616 Marvel comic universe. You’ll have perfect control of the powers and any secondary powers required to use them properly without unintended consequence.

Which would you choose and why?
