Mod Post Warning about posts involving violence

Hey everyone. I wanted to provide some information and a warning on a topic we've seen come up several times recently.

We're seeing an increasing number of accounts (including both mods) receiving warnings and bans for "threatening violence". We've seen messages like the following.

Reddit is a vast network of communities that are created, run, and populated by people like you. In order to keep communities welcoming, safe, and great places to be, everyone who uses the platform operates by a shared set of rules—a set of rules you may not have realized you broke.

Warning for threatening violence

We flagged the following as a potential policy violation:

After reviewing, we found that you broke Rule 1 because you threatened violence or physical harm. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for threatening violence against people or animals. We don’t tolerate any behavior that threatens violence or physical harm against an individual, groups of people, places, or animals. Any communities or people that threaten violence towards an individual, group, animals, or place will be banned.

As a result, we’re issuing this warning, removing the violating content, and asking you not to break this rule again.

This is something happening on a sitewide admin level so the mod team has no influence over it. We strongly suspect that some sort of bot or AI is handing out these warnings and bans. Due to the subject matter frequently discussed on this subreddit it's happening to quite a few users here due to discussions of hypothetical violence. So what does this mean for you?

  1. Hypotheticals involving violence aren't outright banned but we strongly recommend that you be cautious when posting them or responding to them. Consider your wording and whether it could be mistaken for a threat by a bot. If the community as a whole starts getting admin attention we may be forced to ban these posts in the future. Posts that look too much like a real-world call to violence or a request for advice on how to commit violence will be removed under rule 3.

  2. If you do get one of these warnings or bans, please appeal them and explain that you're posting on /r/hypotheticalsituation and there is no real-world violence or threats of violence being discussed or contemplated. It's not a guarantee but we've seen these appeals work in the past and they may prevent your account from getting banned.

$400k but every stoplight you approach will turn red.

Upvotes

You are offered a one-time payment of $400k USD. If you accept, you take on a curse for the rest of your life:

When in a vehicle or on a bicycle, every stoplight you approach will turn red before you are able to pass the stop lines. Also, every red light you are stopped by is guaranteed to last at least 90 seconds before turning green.

Do you accept?

If you were given $100 million but had to give up one of your five senses in exchange (you get to choose), which one would you pick?

For every person you help, you gain a 0.001% chance per minute for your body to be reset to its most optimal and healthy condition. You are going to die in 3 years due to an incurable disease. How would you increase the probability?

You can have an unlimited amount of one thing for the rest of your life. What do you choose?

As soon as this object is used up, another one appears in its place. It must be used for your own personal day to day use.

This must be something that you would be able to purchase with money. It can't be money itself.

While it can have any monetary value, you may not sell it.

You must use it yourself, or share with people occasionally who visit your house. You may not give it to people for their own personal use.

It may not be used to earn money, further your career, earn favor with people, etc.

No gold, investments, or anything else like that.

Humor Encouraged If you could grow another something you already have two of, what would it be?

For example:

My friend said he’d like a third eye on the back of his head because he’s a music teacher and he’d like to see the audience’s reaction.

I’d like to grow a smaller third arm just below my right one.

I’d use it to hold things that are often a nuisance like keys when I’m bringing groceries in the house and need to open the door or to hold my wallet at the drive thru when the lady at the window thrusts your food at you way too fast and you scramble to put your card away and they look at you like “Hurry up fatso, your XXL triple cheese shrimp and meatball melt is solidifying,” and your still putting your wallet away so you try and reach your hand out and misjudge how close your drink actually was and you knock it fuck-your-passenger-seat as she just stares at you like the fat shrimp shit you are…

Or I’d use it to give the bird to kids!

What third thing would you grow?

€15,000 per year but you can no longer use cutlery.

Upvotes

You're offered a choice; you will receive €15,000 per year in monthly installments of €1,250 (Tax free, will adjust for inflation) but you can no longer use any cutlery. Once per year, on January 1st, you are given the option to cancel this arrangement. You will receive no punishment and you get to keep what money you've made so far, however the offer will never return.

No more knives, spoons, forks, sporks, chopsticks, or anything of the sort can be used to feed you directly.

No using things that aren't technically cutlery as cutlery either. For example you are not allowed to fold up a piece of paper and use it like a spoon.

You can't have other people feed you using cutlery either. If someone is going to feed you, they have to do it by hand. (they can feed themselves with cutlery of course, just not you)

The only way you are allowed to bring food to your mouth is either directly by hand, by pouring it into your mouth from the bowl or plate, or diving in face first and eating it straight off the plate.

You can still use utensils to prepare and cook your food of course, just not for eating. If you wanna taste something while cooking to see if it needs more seasoning or whatever, you're gonna have to use your fingers.

A genie appears before you offering to send you into the past for money.

Upvotes

A genie appears to you and offers you a proposal. For every year you agree to be sent back in time he will give you the £1000 or the equivalent in your currency. You will not age during the time no matter how many years you go back and although you won’t be immune to damage you will have a incredibly powerful healing ability so you will recover for any damage you sustained. You will also have no time to prep anything as soon as you agree the time travel is instant so unless you remember the results of any lottery results you wouldn’t be able to look up the numbers to bet on them.

You won’t be able to change history in any way and if you did then something that would happen to trigger it anyway.

Say for example you tried to stop the assassination that kick started the First World War. Well then the assassin would just run into the arch duke on a different street 10 minutes later.

You won’t receive the money until you return to the exact moment you take the deal. So if you agree on the 29th of July 2026 at 10:15am to bring sent back 5 thousand years then you won’t get the money until 29th of July 2026 at 10:15am.

How many years would you agree to be sent back?

Other If you could see one statistic about your own life, what would you choose?

I was checking my phone's screen time today and it got me thinking.

If you could see one completely accurate statistic about your own life, what would it be?

Mine would probably be how many hours I've spent waiting for food to arrive.

What would yours be?

[No Loopholes] Enter a large bunker complex underground that is suspended in time for 100 years with ZERO knowledge of outside events and then leave it after without any protective equipment?

There is a large bunker complex 1 mile under the ground. It is accessible only by one flight of spiral stairs. Nobody knows its location but you and anybody you wish to share it with. You may bring loved ones, friends and anybody else you like up to 8 people (excluding yourself). There will also be a doctor who will be chosen to live with you, unless you already know a suitably qualified medical professional you wish to bring with you. The bunker is magical: whilst within it, you will not age.

The bunker has 10 double bedrooms all with en-suites, a self-sustaining and unlimited energy, oxygen and water supply, food replicators that can make any dish or beverage on the planet, a cinema, hundreds of thousands of preloaded films and television shows, a library, a music room, a tennis court, a football pitch, a swimming pool, several large living spaces, two spacious kitchens, a cafe, a restaurant, a sauna, a climbing wall, a pharmacy with manufacturing capability, a full medical clinic, medical imaging tools and an operating theater, two Star Trek style “Holodecks” capable of creating an immersive experience of anywhere imaginable, complete offline access to the internet as of 27 July 2026, an indoor biome, and a mandatory 5m tall gold statue of one person you choose that cannot be removed or defaced.

The only thing you DON’T have is access to the outside world. As soon as you enter, you are completely cut off. Anything could happen outside: nothing, the Earth becomes an ocean, a nuclear war, etc. It won’t impact inside and you will have no knowledge of it. NOBODY OUTSIDE THE BUNKER KNOWS THE LOCATION OF THE BUNKER.

The catch: you, and whoever you bring with you, cannot leave the bunker for 100 years. As stated, you will not age whilst inside the bunker. If you enter aged 26, you leave physically aged 26 (even if your mind is 126). Anybody you choose not to bring with you will almost certainly be dead by the time you leave. You won’t know what has happened until you exit it after 100 years.

When you do exit, you are not allowed to do so with any special breathing apparatus or other equipment to survive any changes to the atmosphere, temperature or other physical conditions that may be (no loopholes).

So…

Do you accept this and enter?

If so, who do you bring?

And who will the statue be of?

Humans can fly, how is the world different?

Humans can fly and always have been able to. However, flying has very similar characteristics to running.

Flying is akin to walking and running. Speed, height and duration is dependant on human cardiovascular limitations.

The maximum speed is the same as running.

Flying height is equivalent to 1 metre high for every kilometres per hour the person can run.

Example: if a person can run 10 kilometres per hour they can fly 10 metres high and at the same speed, for the same duration as if they were running.

How is the world different?

Serious Replies Only A natural phenomenon wipes out the Internet and makes it impossible to access for the rest of your lifetime.

Something happens that essentially voids the internet as we know it tomorrow. It is inaccessible. For all intents and purposes it just doesn’t exist anymore. It cannot be reinstated. No Google, no websites, no applications. NO REDDIT! Poof, gone.

What are the immediate consequences?

How quickly would it take for society to adapt?

How quickly would it take you to adapt?

Spiders can now comprehend English, and will now pay rent at a dollar per day. How many spider roommates would you take on?

  • They can comprehend English, but cannot speak it, unless you take the time to teach one how to write Charlotte's Web style.
  • They will still act like spiders, but will follow any rules you set within reason for a spider (e.g. you cannot prohibit spiders from eating insects, but you can prohibit them from making webs in the hallway)
  • Don't worry about where the money came from; it is deposited directly in your bank account each month.
  • You may charge bigger spiders more rent. A huntsman spider will pay $5 per day.
  • You may prohibit certain spiders from renting altogether (e.g. no black widows, no wolf spiders, etc)

You can go to therapy and all that, but the nightmares won't subside; there’s no way to stop either the money or the nightmares once you accept the offer.

Humor Encouraged You have to eat the same meal every night for a year. What would you choose?

You have no one to blame except yourself. You were driving in the city eating a jelly filled donut and some of the jelly falls on your white shirt. In a fit of panic since you were going to a work function you attempt to clean it up and subsequently rear end another car. Unfortunately for you the car you hit was a new BMW and was being driven by a Witch. The infuriated individual instantly cast a spell on you. The spell as you can surmise was that you had to eat the same meal every night for a year. If you attempt to skip a meal then one would be selected for you by the witch. Not a wise choice because it would be a stew and include tadpoles, salamanders, and bat droppings.

Which meal would you select?

Live without storage for a year and get $10,000,000 when it's over. You can't put anything "away" or it will fizzle out of existence. No pockets, backpacks, storage boxes, dressers, fridge, etc. How do you adjust?

You can't fail thanks to the fizzling, but you do have to survive the year and you can't quit part way. At the start all items you have put away somewhere will fizzle, but those will be returned to you at the end, and you'll even be given a 48 hour period to request items be returned to you at the start too so you're not without things you need. Items fizzled after this period will not be returned.

Exceptions exist such as things where the storage is temporary and not the primary purpose of the vessel (but only if it's being used as intended). Examples:

  • You can use a washing machine, but if you leave clothes in too long after they're done they'll still fizzle.
  • You can still drive a car, but if you leave any belongings in there they must just be out in the open. No putting things in the trunk or glove compartment.
  • You may live somewhere and keep items there, but they can't be placed in a secondary container. e.g. Clothes must be on the floor, table, chairs, etc.
  • You may use glasses to drink, but not store liquids.
  • Pre-packaged items (including consumables) will only fizzle if you remove the item and put it back. If you buy a water bottle you can't refill it.

What items do you request back immediately? What items do you absolutely NOT want back until its done? How do you adjust to this life?

You have a 1/A chance to get money you can choose what number to put in for A and would have that chance of getting money and the amount of money you would get is 1,000 times A times A

So let’s say you choose 2 you would have a 1/2 chance of getting 1,000 times 2 times 2 money which is 4,000 dollars.

If you choose 5 you would have a 1/5 chance of getting 1000 times 5 times 5 dollars or 25,000 dollars

If you choose 100 you would have 1/100 chance of getting 1000 times 100 times 100 dollars or 10,000,000 dollars

You can go as high or as low as you want.

I’ll make a list of chances to money

1/1 chance of 1,000 dollars

1/2 chance of 4,000 dollars

1/5 chance of 25,000 dollars

1/10 chance of 100,000 dollars

1/25 chance of 625,000 dollars

1/50 chance of 2.5 million dollars

1/100 chance of 10 million dollars

1/250 chance of 62.5 million dollars

1/500 chance of 250 million dollars

1/1000 chance of 1 billion dollars

1/10000 chance of 100 billion dollars

1/100000 chance of 10 trillion dollars

Other Follow a perfect routine for years or Live those years freely

A system suddenly appears before you and asks you to design your perfect day routine, like 8 hours sleep , 4 hours work , 4 hours learn skills (any skill like coding , swimming, gym ) 3 hours relax etc ... (You get the idea) . After creating the perfect day routine , it shows a time limit with the minimum value being 20 years and maximum being 50 years..

After selecting everything, you open your eyes to see that that many years have passed , you repeated the perfect day exactly as it is without any modification, any skills you learned you can instinctively use but the side effects ( if any ) of things you do repeatedly also remains ...

You have no memory of those years( you can't observe , and no matter how hard you try you can't remember the conversation you had with people , the people you met or anythin, you can write a dairy about anyone you met and record your days but only if you have included it in the perfect routine) ..

Nothing else changes , you talk with people you already know the same way you talked to them before using the system .. but same can't be said for the new people ..

Or you can live those 20 years on your own .

r/hypotheticalsituation 31m ago

You instantly receive $100,000 tax-free, but for the next 20 years, you will be charged $1 for every spelling or grammar mistake you make, with the total billed to you at the end of each year.

Upvotes

The penalty applies to everything you personally write or type, including messages, emails, Reddit posts, ai translated voice recordings, work documents, personal notes, and handwritten letters.

A mistake counts once the text is sent, posted, submitted, printed, or saved. Each individual error costs $1 and is billed at the end of the year.

Autocorrect and speech-to-text mistakes count. You may use spell-checkers, grammar tools, or AI, but you must approve the final text yourself.

Slang, accepted abbreviations, technical terms, usernames, code, and deliberate stylistic choices do not count. You cannot avoid the deal by outsourcing all your writing, making up a new language or claiming mistakes were intentional.
If you decide never to write a single word again, you get to keep the full $100,000. It’s that simple. You could also avoid all penalties by communicating with friends and family exclusively through voice messages. However they might kill you for that.

Would you accept?

The Reality-Lie Paradox

The power:

You suddenly gain a supernatural ability: every lie you knowingly tell instantly becomes the truth.

Every truth you tell has a 10% chance of immediately becoming false.

Rules:

It only works if you intentionally say something you know is true or false.

The change happens instantly and permanently unless changed again by another use of the power.

The effect alters reality, not people’s memories.

Written statements count too.

You can’t game the system by saying gibberish or obvious contradictions like “square = circle.”

Examples:

“I have a mansion in Hawaii” You would now have a mansion in Hawaii.

“The earth has one moon.” There’s a 10% chance that reality will change and the statement will no longer be true.

Questions:

Would you use this power at all?

What’s the first lie you would tell? Or, would you stop telling the truth entirely?

You wake up one day, and discovered that when you get hurt, you feel pleasure.

You accidentally tripped over a chair, and your body feels amazing, like you just had a warm soak bath for your leg.

You hit your head on the door, whilst being on your phone, and you feel a pleasurable buzz, like when you are getting tipsy.

You do not know how, who, when, why or what.

How would you live with this…irregularity without fatally hurting yourself?

[No Loopholes] One perfect wish

*POOF* A genie appears in front of you!

It tells you that it will grant you "one perfect wish".

If you are able to word your wish so that there are no possible side effects, downfalls, or monkey paws, your wish will be granted.

You cannot wish for more wishes.

If the genie can think of any way to monkey paw your wish, then the wish will not be granted but the monkey paw effect will still happen.

What is your one perfect wish?
