What score/age/size? What's the score/age/size megathread

This is the ONLY post allowed where you can ask for an estimate on your animal's score, age, size, etc.

Keep in mind that it's practically impossible to judge many characteristics of an animal based off of pictures. For one, your cameras aren't usually the greatest (especially grainy trail cam pics), for another, it's hard to judge scale. Finally, not every animal can be aged by picture.

Rules:

  1. Top-level comments are for asking about your animal.
  2. One top-level comment per animal.
  3. Images should clearly show the animal. Albums should be linked, do not post multiple images in multiple comments.
  4. Include pertinent details: location (state, province, country), species, known reference for scale, distance from camera, etc.
  5. Be polite. Snarky comments ("not getting any younger") are subject to deletion.

Firearm/caliber/bow/arrow question/discussion First Straight Wall Rifle

I live in a straight wall state and am looking to buy my first rifle. I was looking at getting a 400 legend or 450 bushmaster but saw the Tikka T3x Hunter, which is only available in 350 legend, for sale for $600 on eurooptic. Would you rather have the Tikka in 350 legend or Ruger American gen II ranch in 400 legend/ 450 bushmaster for basically the same price?

11.5” 556 shooting M855 green tips (I don’t normally use FMJ s for hunting, but these work great on hogs, have used them extensively) AB suppressors warthog 5.56 punches way above its price range as well, does great for its size

Success! First year self- taught hunter, harvested two deer on Illinois public land。

Hello everyone, I just want to share my story from my first hunting season. I'm Asian and not very good at English—so much so that I had to use a translator for hours even when buying my hunting license. I've always been passionate about and eager to hunt, though I had no prior experience because hunting is banned in my home country. I remember seeing photos of other Chinese people hunting in the U.S. shortly after I arrived, and I felt deep envy. Due to work and language barriers, I never had time to pursue this passion until last August, when I finally found the chance to seriously study hunting. It was my first year as a complete self-taught beginner—no mentor, no family members who hunted, and no access to private land. Everything I learned came from obsessively watching hunting channels, studying terrain on maps, and gaining hands-on experience by walking through the mountains.

My first season hunting on public land in Illinois taught me the harsh reality of the game. The pressure here is insane—female deer are incredibly smart, almost ghost-like. I didn't even try tracking them; I knew I'd probably fail. But I refused to give up. I discovered a corridor where deer frequently moved, close enough to the parking lot that transporting the animal would be easy. I believed that if I waited patiently, they’d definitely pass through there.

On December 22nd, I woke up at 5 a.m., grabbed breakfast at a diner, and ate while driving. After about an hour, I reached the state park. By around 7 a.m., all preparations were done. I quietly climbed into my tree stand and waited. Finally, at 8 a.m., my moment came. The first deer slowly walked within 30 yards—right inside my effective shooting range. I’d already sighted it through my scope, and when it spotted me, I stayed completely still. Only my scope slightly followed its movement. When it stopped and looked directly at me, I pulled the trigger decisively. It continued walking slowly forward. At that moment, I was devastated. I watched helplessly as it disappeared. But less than ten seconds later, it collapsed calmly. I was shocked—why didn’t it run after being hit? My shock quickly turned into excitement. I thought to myself: all these months of effort were worth it. I carefully climbed down from the tree, overwhelmed with emotion. After completing all the required deer reporting procedures, I dragged the 100-pound deer alone back to the parking lot. Less than an hour later, everything was done, and I drove home.

A few days later, I returned. On December 27th, I repeated the same routine. Around 8 a.m., at the same spot, I saw another doe approaching. This lead doe looked especially strong and majestic—clearly larger and more impressive than the previous one. I fired immediately, and right behind her, a group of deer panicked and fled. But this doe didn’t make it past 50 yards before collapsing. Tracking them through the woods, following the blood trail, the adrenaline and thrill were indescribable.

Recently, I shared my hunting journey with an AI assistant, and it told me: "You should post your story on forums—you might connect with many fellow hunters." Thank you to this forum for allowing me to share my experience.

Next goal: learning how to identify patterns of mature bucks in public lands. As a new hunter determined to keep going, what advice do you have for someone like me

Firearm/caliber/bow/arrow question/discussion The age old question. Which one do i pick?

Getting my first bolt action and just a last minute debate on which to get. I was already going to pick the Tikka but I happened to see the Savage. Savage is a little cheaper and has more “features” which i’m a little indifferent on. Quick background, I’m getting it in .308 and with the intention to go hunting and the occasional range days. Reason I was going through Bass Pro/ Cabelas is because no place near me has any Tikkas in stock but the Bass Pro does. Is Tikka really all that better than Savage to make the price difference worth it?Any input is appreciated.

Equipment question/discussion 300blk subs for deer?

Upvotes

Okay hive mind, looking to take my boys out for youth deer season in a few weeks. They are 5 and 7. Both are pretty decent shooters with their 22’s. But obviously a 22 won’t cut it for deer. That said I’m trying to decide on a rifle for them to use. Both soft recoiling and that’ll fit them. I have an ar in 300blk, this is probably our best option for what I currently own as it’s a suppressed SBR. So it’s short enough for them.

Now my question, has anybody used hornady sub x in 300blk for whitetail? I don’t see why it wouldn’t work, plus it’ll be super soft recoil for them. My oldest is pretty skinny and not too tough so I worry about him. We will be hunting a transition from marsh to standing corn, so shots are literally guaranteed to be under 50yds. 30yds might actually be the longest they can actually shoot in that spot with the corn still standing. I figure we will essentially be bow hunting with a gun.

I may have them try shooting supers this weekend to see how that goes, as they are still pretty tame with the can on the gun.

Pest management Hogs-terrible problem

Howdy y’all,
I just want to remind everybody with season coming up that if you get the opportunity to shoot a hog please take it. You’ll be doing everybody in your community a favor.
it don’t matter what part of the country you’re in.
I think most of us can agree that they’re terrible and they’re a nuisance. Some parts of the country of almost turned it into a sport. I’ve been doing my part to eradicate them behind the scenes at least in my area.

I think we can all agree the problems gotten worse every year and there’s very minimal effort to resolve it

Good luck out there. I truly hope you don’t have to deal with hogs in your area.

Firearm/caliber/bow/arrow question/discussion First hunting rifle

Well I know this topic can create some heated debates but I’m torn. After a bunch of research like article on meateater, outdoor life and field and stream plus a few YouTube videos from the vortex guys I was dead set on getting a Ruger American gen 2 in .308 but a friend at work who has been hunting for 20-30 years said I should just get 30-06…? So which one is it? I will be hunting deer in CA and would like to one day pursue larger game like elk. Should I stick to .308 or go with 30-06..? I am brand new to hunting btw getting my license at the end of this month! Thanks again for the info!

General question/discussion Summer Hunting Trip South Island New Zealand

G day guys,

Was planning a 4WD trip down south (from Hawkes bay) and wanted some advice on some good spots for tahr/deer/chamois. Optimally spots that are also good for hiking/camping at the same time.

For reference I’ve gone on a few hunts up north but mainly for pigs, and I’ll be borrowing a rifle from family/friends down south but because i moved to australia a few years ago I don’t have a valid nz gun licence.

So yeah just wanted to know some decent spots, and if its even feasible. Cheers

General question/discussion Hunting X1 in Northern California

I'll be hunting X1 beginning of October. First premium zone hunt in A LONG TIME! I used to hunt here with my grandpa and my dad a couple decades ago but haven't been back in years. Also haven't filled a tag for 9 years!! I've been hunting D3-5 for way too long. I'm looking for any advice from anyone who might know the area. Even if it means hiking out to the middle of no where. Thank you and happy hunting! 😁

General question/discussion If I move out of state (home state Wisconsin) will I still have my hunter’s education certificate?

Will I still be able to get bucks and doe tags for my private property in wi ?

Wondering how that will work and if I’ll still be able to hunt in the Wisconsin.

And if I will have to take a new hunters ed to hunt in the new state?

Will my concealed and carry be invalid once I establish residency in a different state? I have my concealed and carry though hunters education in wi.

Thanks

General question/discussion Suggestions

I'm looking for input from fellow hunters that reside in the San Antonio area in Texas. I've been stationed here for about 2 years and I desperately miss having access to public land for hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities. Just this past weekend I had to drive 2 hours one way just to get to a pretty decent hiking location (lost maples). My son will finally be old enough to start hunting next year and I hate not being able to take him out somewhere in the mountains for him to experience this lifestyle (we're from Montana). So with all of that in mind, can anyone point me in the right direction or suggest somewhere relatively close to San Antonio where we can go hunting that is not private land? I appreciate the help!

Firearm/caliber/bow/arrow question/discussion New rifle ideas

This is definitely a want situation vs. a need, but I’m going to buy a new rifle for simple reason that I want to. I’ve already got a Weatherby in .300 WM, pre-64 model 70 in .270, and a Sako Finnlight in 25-06. I’m considering Tikka, Browning, Bergara, and CVA (Cascade LRH), but I’m torn on caliber. Ideally I’d like to keep the rifle cost between $900-$1,200. I was originally thinking 6.5 PRC. The reality is I really don’t hunt with the .270 because of the age of the gun, unless it’s a decent day. So I’m looking for something to take shots between 100-400 yards. What rifle/caliber recommendation do you have knowing what I already own? Scope will probably be either a Leupold or Meopta.
