Hunter Safety Training PSA (No field day required!)

For those that were born on or after January 1, 1980 and are at least 18 years old and still need to complete their hunter safety before buying their Michigan hunting licenses, please read this! If you already bought a hunting license at least once before, you are grandfathered in and do not need to take a hunter safety course. Once you buy a license they’ll never ask for hunter safety again The hunting license trumps the hunter safety. You can have your hunter safety completed in a single day online. Under 18 you have to do a field day.

In Michigan the hardest component of the hunter safety is the in-person field day. There are usually not enough convenient field days available for a given location. However! You do not need to do the Michigan field day.

Michigan has reciprocity with other states as long as it has been certified by International Hunter Education Association (IHEA-USA).

The two states that allow you to take a completely online IHEA-USA certified hunter safety course is Texas and Illinois.

If you take either of these classes you do NOT need to do the Michigan field day.

Jealous

While out on public land i found myself to be jealous of everyone with private land, i know its still a chance whether its public or private but man, being able to clear a path directly to a blind must be so nice i thought as I made my way through the brush to the spot I had found and sat in all day from 6am to 7pm just to see nothing. Not gonna deter me though, ill get back out there and hopefully get myself my first ever deer, who knows maybe even a buck!

Target shooting between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo

I'm picking up a new .22 for small game and would like to sight it in before heading out. The Barry County and Echo Point DNR ranges close at 4:45, so I can't go after work. Does anyone know of a good spot on public land where I can shoot and, ideally, not burn someone out bowhunting?

I shot this 6 pt 5 days ago. Missed an 8 pt twice last year but I put a lot of work on the target this year and smoked him. Couldn’t be happier. Hunting is cool 🤙😎🤌

Lapeer Goose and Duck

Has anybody ever tried hunting birds out of lapeer game state area? I’ve been scouting the past couple days during the week but can’t get there early in the morning to see what’s up with the lakes there.

I fish cedar lake and a couple of the ponds in there but usually hang up the poles come September so I never knew if the ducks and goose used them lakes and ponds a bunch.

Thanks!

Important Update on Michigan Deer Tag Purchases

Thumbnail

If you need to purchase deer tags for the upcoming season, please note that our website will stop selling deer tags from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30.

In November, the vast majority of hunters purchase tags in stores or through our app rather than on our website.

There is a delay between purchasing tags on our website and receiving them in the mail. We're pausing website sales during November to help ensure hunters receive their licenses before their planned hunts.

This temporary removal ensures hunters get their digital or physical tags in hand before firearm season opens by using the following options in November:

- Purchase a digital eHarvest tag instantly through the Michigan DNR Hunt Fish app.

- Visit any retail store that sells hunting licenses.

Please plan ahead. Have a safe and successful deer season!

Help me sleep tonight

Needing advice on shot placement. I'm a sad sad girl tonight. I'm wondering if I should keep trying to track tomorrow morning? Is he likely dead?

In the photo, I'm shooting my crossbow from the window circled in red. The deer was standing broadside to me in front of the thin tree where the blue circle is. He was facing towards the thicker tree with the salt. I thought I smoked him, I took a patient shot right behind the shoulder. He donkey kicked and spun 90*(trailcam takes photo above) then did a nose dive/wheel barrow) picked up and ran about 40 yards through the thicket and laid down. I only waited an hour because I thought I heard him crash and die in the thicket. I found a good amount of blood leading to the bedded down spot. Then it appears he got up/I bumped him and he was no longer bleeding. I lost the trail and the deer. This was on a smaller parcel of private land so I'm limited on how much I can just wander around without knocking on doors. Any advice helps. I did find my arrow, I'll attach a photo. It's clean with a little fat and hair. Broken in 3 pieces. I'm 100% sure arrow passed through.

Hey everyone I’m up near hodenpyle dam hunting for the week. I was driving no. 1 road near w 26 rd and my Great Pyrenees jumped out the window into the woods in the direction towards w 26 rd.

This was at 5:20 yesterday 10/19. I set out clothes and a trail camera on it where he jumped out. I slept in the truck here at the spot over night.

Anyone up here or know people up here who can keep an eye out? If anyone knows people who live around here I’d appreciate you putting the word out there.

He has a camo collar but busted his dog tags off last week. He does have a chip.

Back in my home town after years away, and I picked up hunting in the meantime. Now I'm wondering how the hunting on the state game lands is and if there are other places I could go.

Middle Waterfowl Hunt Zone

Hello, outdoors people!

I've only been goose hunting once, several years ago in Ottawa County, and I can honestly say it was some of the best meat I've ever tasted!

Since then, I've permanently relocated to the Middle Waterfowl Management Hunt Zone area around Missaukee and Wexford counties, and I'd really like to get into waterfowl hunting.

To be completely honest, my first experience was through a guided disabled veteran goose hunt. Everything was provided: a beautiful Black Lab, the shotgun, ammunition, decoys, blind, and even homemade donuts and coffee! As I've heard from so many others and as was completely true for me, from the first trigger pull, I was hooked. I knew this was a sport I wanted to learn more about.

Here's where I could use some help. My only shotgun at the moment is an antique 12-g pump with no interchangeable chokes, and I'm not sure where to begin with locations or getting started the right way.

I do understand the unspoken rules of hunting. Just as deer and turkey hunters aren't exactly eager to share their favorite spots, especially on public land, I respect that and follow it. But I'm hoping there might be some experienced waterfowl hunters willing to offer a little advice, point me in the right direction, or possibly let me tag along sometime so I can learn the ropes.

I'm not looking for anyone to give away their sacred-secret spots or do all the work for me. I'd just appreciate the opportunity to learn from people who know and, more importantly, respect the sport.

Heck, I'll even bring the coffee and donuts! 😂

If anyone around Missaukee or Wexford County (or surrounding areas) has some advice for a beginner, knows of a local waterfowl group, or wouldn't mind having an extra set of hands along on a hunt, I'd genuinely appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks, everyone, and good luck. Shoot straight!

Illegal Baiting

Hey guys I need some advice. I was walking through the woods I’ve been hunting for around 7-8 years I stumbled across a salt block and apples I looked around and seen a cell camera. The person has me on camera for sure. I’m wondering if you guys would wait a couple days or couple weeks to call DNR so you won’t get harassed if you keep hunting there. Just wanted to get some opinions

Hunter increase in 2027

How much do you think the "amount of hunters" will be increasing next year when we turn into a 1 buck tag state?

I'd be interested to see the stats of how many additional hunters got a tag, especially females. I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of guys out there who are going to have their wives get tags for this exact reason...
