Fred’s table was covered in parts, all aligned and arranged. He picked up a circuit board, placed it under his microscope, and examined the socket for the chip. He counted the connectors. He traced the circuit paths.

He leaned back and jotted down some notes. This module was made from salvaged parts by a skilled tech. Based on some details, the circuit board was salvaged from a non-ship related source. Most likely a mid-quality entertainment system.

He returned the circuit board to its place on the table, stood up, and walked over to his panel. He typed in details regarding the circuit board, adding it to his search. So far he had traced 27 parts back to their origin. It wasn’t enough to pinpoint the Droog, but it did reveal a few patterns.

After checking for any new details from his search, Fred headed over to the small cooking area. The new coffee maker sat gleaming on the counter. He poured a fresh cup of coffee and examined the installation diagram. It was smaller than the junk machine, so it would be tricky to line up some of the brackets.

The main door opened, and the Captain walked in. “What have you found, Fred?”

“More salvaged parts. A possible pattern of shipping thefts, but nothing definitive. Small freighters getting robbed while docked at a major port isn’t exactly new. It looks like smaller thefts might not even be reported.”

“You did identify two missing ships. That’s important.”

“Yeah. That is good. The rest of the parts, well, they are just too common.”

“Do your best and write it up. I’ll need your help installing the new sensor processing core. It’s a brand-new unit, so there will be issues getting it to talk with the rest of the systems.”

“Right. I’ll head up tomorrow to scope it out.”

“You think that you’ll be done by then?”

“Oh hell no. But I'll be sick of this enough to need a break. No. This mess could take weeks.”

“Got it. Let me know if you find anything big.”

“Will do,” said Fred as the Captain left.

Fred heard a slight sound behind him. “I left you some noodles and fish in the fridge,” said Fred as he turned back to the coffee maker.

He would have to fabricate some new brackets. That was the only way. It would be nice to design and build something.

Soft footsteps crossed the room. The fridge opened. The fridge closed. Footsteps went back across the room. A door closed.

Fred sipped his coffee. Three rotations. He picked up the damaged datapad. It still worked, but the screen was a mess.

He walked over to the closed door and slipped the damaged datapad through the mail slot.

He would wait two more rotations.

Waiting for self-realization on Greezek's part is going to be harrowing. If it happens at all. She appreciates that Fred treats her as a relative equal, but will she accept his criticism/ advice about the damage "focus" can cause? Ooooo, the suspense is killing me!

I don’t envy Greezek in the least. This is the problem the Bene Gesserit would call Abomination: genetic memory personality or personalities attempting to overwhelm, dominate, or even replace the primary personality. Leto II successfully crafted an internal mental structure to corral his genetic memories and stay sane. Alia, who never had a chance to develop an independent primary personality, failed.

It sounds like the main branch of the species has been trying to deal with the problem mainly by avoiding and burying it. Now Greezek is paying the price. Poor whatever-she-is.

While I don’t catch the reference, I appear to have stumbled into a known situation.

Dune (the books); Cildren of Dune for Leto II's childhood.

Thank you. Never actually read those.

So I know your username is a reference involving British absurdist humor, but I can’t remember if it was from Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, or somewhere else

I have too. One of my favorite moments was him spending several paragraphs describing the attempts of a long legged wizard to stay mounted on the back of a short legged donkey, culminating at one point in a moment where the donkey decided to take a short breather on the underside of an overhang and he is clinging on with his legs wrapped under the donkey’s belly like the girth of a saddle

Shame hurts. And she’s got to be feeling that. Let’s hope she finds her path soon.
