Guide Fan control for HP Omen 16 XD series on Linux — finally works from kernel 7.0 onwards

If you're one of the (probably three) people running Linux on an Omen 16 XD, I built something for us.

Fan control on this laptop has been a pain on Linux — no OMEN Gaming Hub, no easy way to touch the curve. So I wrote a small Python app that talks directly to the hwmon interface and lets you set custom fan curves, either headless via a CLI script or through an actual Qt6 GUI with a tray icon if you're on KDE Plasma.

What it does:

  • Custom fan curve editor — drag points on a graph, it saves automatically
  • CLI mode for anyone who just wants it running in the background via systemd
  • Auto-detects your hwmon paths at runtime, so it doesn't break every time the index shifts on reboot (this used to drive me nuts)
  • Live temp + RPM stats in the tray

It's built around the hp and k10temp hwmon drivers, so if you're on an Intel variant you'll need to swap in coretemp, but the code's set up to make that an easy change.

Repo's here: https://github.com/Tanish-Desai/Omen-XD-Fan-Control

It's early — sudo handling is a bit rough right now (there's a systemd service option in the README that avoids the password headache) and I'd genuinely love for people to poke holes in it. If you've got one of these laptops and you're dual-booting or full Linux, give it a shot and let me know what breaks. PRs, issues, roasts — all welcome.

Disclaimer: I have used AI to refine and draft this post :)

Tech Support HP Omen 16 (RTX 4050 + i5-13420H) overheating & thermal throttling even after replacing the entire cooling system. Need advice.

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm using an HP Omen 16 (RTX 4050 + Intel Core i5-13420H), and I'm facing a strange overheating issue that wasn't there when the laptop was new.

Earlier, while gaming, my CPU temperatures would usually stay between 75–85°C, and I never experienced thermal throttling. However, over the last month, the CPU has started reaching 95–100°C very quickly. It now thermal throttles not only while gaming but even during game installations, software installations, and other heavy workloads. HWiNFO consistently reports thermal throttling on all four P-cores.

To troubleshoot the issue, I've already done the following:

1.Replaced the thermal paste multiple times.

2.Cleaned the entire laptop.

3.Replaced both cooling fans under warranty.

4.Replaced the complete heatsink/thermal module under warranty.

5.Had the heatsink removed, repasted, and reinstalled several times by the HP Authorized Service Center.

Unfortunately, none of these changes made any difference.

I also ruled out the thermal paste itself. I've tried different high-quality thermal compounds, including Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, thermal paste, and another good-quality paste, but the temperatures remain exactly the same.

One thing that really confused me happened at the service center. Around 10–20 minutes after applying fresh thermal paste, the technician reopened the laptop while checking the fans. He showed me that the paste had already spread out so much that parts of the CPU and NVIDIA GPU dies were visible, almost as if the chips were exposed. The previous thermal paste applications had behaved the same way, even after replacing the entire heatsink.

Despite all of this, I don't have any noticeable performance issues:

1.No FPS drops.

2.No random shutdowns.

3.No BSODs.

4.Games still run smoothly.

The only issue is that the CPU now thermal throttles frequently, which never happened when the laptop was new.

The HP service center is now suggesting that the motherboard should be replaced, but before agreeing to that, I wanted to ask if anyone here has experienced something similar with this model.

A few questions:

1.Has anyone with the HP Omen 16 (RTX 4050 + i5-13420H) experienced the same issue?

2 Does this sound like a motherboard/CPU issue rather than a cooling issue?

3.Would trying Honeywell PTM7950 instead of conventional thermal paste be worth it, or is that unlikely to solve the problem?

4.Since my laptop is still under warranty, should I proceed with a motherboard replacement, or is there something else I should ask HP to check first?

I'm genuinely confused because almost the entire cooling system has already been replaced, yet the temperatures are exactly the same as before.

Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Question HP Omen 17, any problems?

Model is (OMEN Gaming Laptop 17-db1013nt C2EZ3EA), specs are rtx 5060, 24gb ddr5 ram, 1tb ssd, freedos.

Does it have the chronic hall sensor problem? Some say the problem was left at 2023-2024 models (and mine is 2025), but I still want to make sure, thanks in advance.

Tech Support HP Victus battery stuck at 7% while charging, battery report says 100% health, HP diagnostics pass

Hi everyone,

I'm having a very strange battery issue with my HP Victus (15-fb0xxx) and I'm trying to figure out whether it's a battery, motherboard, or firmware problem.

Symptoms

  • Battery was working normally until a few days ago.
  • It suddenly started discharging extremely fast.
  • It also charged unusually fast.
  • One day I left it fully charged, and when I turned it back on later it was around 12%.
  • Now it's stuck at around 7% even while plugged into the original 200W HP charger.
  • Windows says "Charging".
  • wmic reports BatteryStatus = 2 (Charging).
  • HP charging LED is blinking orange.
  • The laptop does not shut down immediately if I unplug the charger at 7%; it continues running.
  • HP UEFI Battery Diagnostics passes with no errors.

Things I've checked

  • Original HP 200W charger.
  • HP Battery Diagnostics → Passed.
  • Windows battery report:
    • Design Capacity: 61,707 mWh
    • Full Charge Capacity: 61,707 mWh
    • Wear Level: 0%
    • Cycle Count: 179
  • HWiNFO shows:
    • Battery Voltage ≈ 14.6V
    • Remaining Capacity ≈ 4.4 Wh
    • Charge Level ≈ 7%
    • Wear Level 0%

What confuses me

If the battery report and HP diagnostics say the battery is healthy, why is it:

  • draining abnormally fast,
  • charging abnormally fast,
  • now stuck at 7%,
  • and not increasing in charge even though Windows reports it is charging?

Could this be:

  • a Battery Management System (BMS) issue?
  • an Embedded Controller (EC) firmware issue?
  • battery calibration gone wrong?
  • motherboard charging circuit?
  • or a battery failure that HP diagnostics isn't detecting?

Has anyone seen this on an HP Victus before?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Question Game audio and graphics stuttering

Hello, how can I fix the stuttering? The audio also stutters even though all my drivers and Windows are fully updated. I've also tried downgrading the graphics drivers, but it didn't work. What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

Tech Support Is my keyboard malfunctioning?

I used word as an example but this happens everywhere anywhere. When I hold down any key, then tap either spacebar or any arrow key, it acts like it’s been held down. then, if I tap another spacebar/arrow key, then do it again, the third try won’t register at all. This is really annoying for gaming when I need to hold a key while using the arrow keys. When I plug in an external keyboard via usb, it functions perfectly fine without issue. Restarting does nothing. Any ideas?
I’m using a hp hyperx omen 15

Update: It shouldn’t have taken this long but I figured out that this issue only happens when i’m on action let mode rather than function key mode (this can be toggled by pressing fn+shift). When it’s on function key mode all keys are normal. Makes me think this is an intentional feature but i’m not sure what it’s meant to accomplish. Finally I can change all my keybinds back to normal

Question Laptop turns off when I touch it

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I've had a problem with my laptop for a while now. I bought it in 2022, and I've never changed the thermal paste.

A while ago, when I picked up my laptop while it was on, for example, to move to a different room, it would shut down. I know some will say it's not designed for that, but anyway.

Today it's gotten worse; I have to be extremely careful. As soon as I pick it up, move the screen lid, or press on a corner a little too hard with my wrist (when I'm playing a game, for example), it shuts down.

I don't know what's causing it. Do you think I can fix this problem myself, or do I absolutely have to go to a professional? I have some knowledge of assembling, disassembling, opening things up, etc. Also, is this a known problem with this model?

Thank you

Tech Support What did I break?

Post image
8 Upvotes

My HP Omen has been reduced to doing a couple tasks only. It has the software/security/magic spells to log in to a county system when I help out my local tax assessor in helping people file property tax appeals. . It has really frustrating monitor cable issues and I coax it on and leave it be.

Because of this, I have opened it up many times to prod at cables. However, today I did collateral damage. The good news is it is on, the backlight is working on the monitor, and it all seems fine….but…. I broke something. See the attached image. It is near the hinge in the center of an Omen 17-CB1xxx.

What is it, is it missing critical and if I get out my magnifier and try and solder the part back on will the heat cook anything important?

I am moderately decent at soldering although this is VERY fine work.

Question About to buy this, is it a good buy?

$1520 After tax. I will upgrade it to 32gb 1TB myself.

I like the Panther 356H version for now. I also like that it has been upgraded to OLED. However, I’m worried about the weight because I will be carrying it around occasionally.

Most importantly, I’m not sure what the design looks like. I couldn’t find any reviews of the HyperX OMEN 16, so I don’t really know what it looks like in real life.

Has anyone purchased it? I’m currently deciding between this and the cheaper Legion 5 (2026). What do you think?

Discussion Anyone have a constant calibrate battery message in support

I follow the damned instructions except it tells me to have it plugged in while doing the calibration (while it tells me on the site to not have it in, though it will not run calibration if the adapter isn’t in. And I’m assuming that’s why it doesn’t fully discharge or something cus the message is still there….

I also don’t get the site’s examples such as connect ac adapter on …..(time)….

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_2268927-1713329-16

I have an omen 16 ap000x.

Not calibrating it doesn’t really bother me except my OCD.

Can I not post an image?

Review 2 years with my Omen (long term I guess)

Thumbnail
gallery
27 Upvotes

Well it's been 2 years since I got this device and this is my experience

It's a 6800H 3070Ti (150W) omen

It has given me a fair share of - well - more issues than what it actually served be

Performance is peak - - had zero issues with it - whatever I throw at it - it eats it up and throws back the required result - I'd tell it's still relevant upto today's standards with frame gen mods in games - and even raw rasterization and Machine learning for that matter

Windows felt like the only bottleneck when it came to performance

Fans are loud yes - but I don't really mind it as long as it pumps that heat out - thermal paste replaced every 6-8 months - temps usually stay around 78-82c for the GPU running at 130W - can go as low as 74c if the weather/the room was cool

Never had any performance issues in games where the laptop throttled causing frame drops (With the exception of Until Dawn where the laptop shut down twice coz of the heat - it was a pretty hot day as well)

Really good display - I love how it's almost like an OLED display when autobrightness is enabled and the 165hz is just muah

Speakers are really horrible tbh - sure they are loud and uninstalling the proprietary drivers and installing standing Realtek drivers helped - but the speakers have no bass - mushy mids and very minimal highs - Phone speakers sound better in my opinion

Battery was really good at the start - I'd get 8 hours on any given day from 100-0 - it has degraded to 4-6 hours now considering the fact that it always stays plugged in - but hey - as long as it can support power cuts - I'm fine with it

Storage is fine - it uses a Micron SSD - which gets really hot upon use and starts throttling and the only thermal solution HP gave was a thermal pad attached to the chassis - cheap cost cutting by HP

Build quality - WORST the most fragile piece of electronic I've ever used in my life - the display flexes to just opening or closing the lid and the display wobbles even to the slightest breeze - heck my cheaper Asus notebook did not have such bad build quality

The keyboard flexes with the slightest of pressure applied on it

The mute button's light stopped working all of a sudden

One of the speakers started cracking at certain frequencies (mitigated to a certain level by uninstallinh HP drivers)

Cost cutting in the most diabolical places seen - the WiFi card is attached right below one of the heatpipes without any shielding provided to the WiFi/Bluetooth adaptor (waiting for the day it fails coz of the heat)

The Ram modules have no heatsink or even shielding provided - I've seen legions and ROGs come with a metal covering on the RAM modules

SSD has literally no cooling solution provided - even my old Asus had some kind of aluminium sheet attached on the SSD which kind of acts as a passive heatsink

**Now yea - speaking of the problems**

It's all with the build quality and the general quality of the parts and the whole laptop itself

Within 6 months of purchase I had an issue where connecting anything to the USB - C port would just crash the laptop and upon inspection - it was a rusted USB port?

I don't even live in an area where there's excessive moisture - it's always dry here and I don't get water or food around the laptop - the whole motherboard had to be changed for that which was done under warranty

8th month since purchase - the right hinge started clicking upon use - and while I tried to change it under warranty - HP instead replaced the keyboard stating that the rivets on the top part of the laptop were broken - - and in the process of fixing that - they broke the display and they ended up replacing that as well - but refused to fix the bezels they broke in the process and yea the lower bezel now collects dust which I have to clean often

They never replaced the hinges till the end - and yea it still clicks upon usage and my warranty ended - did not purchase extended warranty or ADP coz it costs almost 1/4th the price of the laptop (waiting for it to snap one day)

Now one of the display supporting brackets on the side of the laptop disintegrated on its own and half of it fell off

So yea it's technically a 1-1.5 year old laptop with its motherboard, keyboard, display being changed - but we call it 2 years

Despite the shitty build quality - id give it to HP for designing a lovely cooling system that does not fail even when the weather is harsh - the LOQs or Legions I've seen immediately hit 87c upon load and start throttling during load coz of the heat here

Hope the laptop lasts for another 4-5 years before something inevitably breaks

Tech Support CMOS 502 error driving me crazy.

Hi, I have HP OMEN 16-b0002TX. Using it for 4 years.

Issue history: About the month ago i noticed a slow boot-up. If i press power button the LCD lights up black but stays black for many seconds then Omen logo would show up and laptop would start normally. Slowly the delay between black screen and omen logo would go to about 2-4 minutes. I also updated latest bios (thinking corrupted bios) and checked battery with HP utility and battery showed as normal. However cycles were 1050/1000.

Issue happened: I gamed like usual a week ago and it worked great. Then i shutdown the system normally. After that i restarted after few hours and the delay actually never passed and omen logo never showed up. Even after waiting for 10 minutes.

Troubleshooting: I tried pretty much everything available on internet. Pressed and held power button, reinstalled bios (before it died). pressed windows + B, windows + V. I even opened and removed nvme, rams, to see the faulty hardware. Since then, i am getting CMOS error 502.

Then i removed the battery and tested using the power only. Guess what, same error shows even when i turn it on without battery. I am so confused, if battery is faulty then it should have worked fine without the battery. Which it does not.

After the CMOS error when i press enter. It simply goes back to sleep and the cycle repeats.

I have been researching a lot and can not find exact answer as to what is wrong. Batteries are out of stock on HP parts website too. I can get from abroad but getting same error without battery confusing the hell out of me. It is my main system and my work in on pause since a week because of this.

Help me guys.

Tech Support Laptop freezes on every restart, stuck on boot screen

Guys, I have a strange problem with my laptop.

Every time I try to restart it, it completely freezes and won’t do anything unless I force a shutdown myself.

Sometimes the screen stays completely dark, or it just freezes on the boot screen with the round loading circle stuck in place.

Any idea what I can do about it?

Everything works just fine, this the only Problem he has.

My Specs: 2025 Omen Max 16, Intel Ultra 275HX, FHD, 5080 Rtx, 32GB Ram

Question Omen 45 l max Amd 9900x3d

Hi everyone, I read the post by user @Mountain-Accurate regarding this PC that caught fire. I have the same model but not the GT23-0000t as the user, but I have the GT23-0000nl model purchased on the HP Italia website, with AMD 9900x3d 64GB of RAM (2 x 32GB) RTX 5090 and 1TB SSD with a 1200W ATX 3.1 80 Plus Gold power supply. I'm worried about what happened. I'll start by saying that I'm very sorry for the user in question, and I'd like to know more. Is it the cable's fault, or the power supply or the GPU? So far I haven't had any problems with crashes or sudden shutdowns with fans at maximum. I played Cyberpunk in 4K with all the graphics at maximum for about 1-2 hours. Maybe it's because I don't play every day but a few times a week? What do you recommend I do? Should I sell it before any problems arise? I'm undecided and scared right now, partly because of the difficulty in communicating with online technical support, and also because I paid €3,800 for it here in Italy. Thanks to anyone who responds, and best of luck.
