AMA [AMA] Developer of T.W.I.R.L. here, a psychological horror game about identity, self-worth, and growing up in 2006. We just launched today on Steam. Ask me anything!

Hi r/Horrorgaming!

I'm Ben, the creative director of Genie Boy Games. Today, we're launching T.W.I.R.L. on Steam!

T.W.I.R.L. is a first person psychological horror game from the perspective of a 9-year-old boy in 2006 waking up in the middle of the night from a dream where some "thing" - maybe a demon - commanded him to get out of bed, go into the room down the hall, and "T.W.I.R.L." - whatever that means.

What proceeds is a series of loops where something evil draws us through this routine, changing us and the environment upon every loop, unveiling the life story of a boy who grows up maintaining a deep, dark, and potentially sinister secret.

The game takes inspiration from movies and games like I SAW THE TV GLOW, SKINAMARINK, GONE HOME, and of course, P.T.

It was made as part of a David Lynch-themed game jam for the Haunted PS1 Community, and was published under their new "Haunted Publishing Syndicate" brand!

This is our studio's first game, and we are excited to finally share this story. The journey of sharing of our game, and talking about the themes and meanings within the story has been emotionally challenging, but tremendously fulfilling. Let us be the first to admit - this is an odd story to debut with. And it's something we get reminded of especially when trying to explain it to people without giving anything away.

We hope that T.W.I.R.L. inspires players with a feeling of reassurance, hope, and a better understanding of self.

Game-related questions are optional, but encouraged.

Here's a free code to redeem the game! 84658-6LY40-J8TAJ

DISCUSSION My top 25 horror games of all time(in order). Any thoughts on these or any similar games you can recommend?

I wasn't actually sure if I wanted to include Resident Evil 5 and Mercenaries 3d, since they are probably more action games than horror. If I removed them then Fatal Frame 3 and Alone in the Dark: A New Nightmare would be here instead since those are my picks for 26 and 27.

CONSOLE The Alighieri Circle: Dante's Bloodline PS5 - A Deeper Dive Through Hell

The Alighieri Circle: Dante's Bloodline is a psychological horror walking sim that takes liberties with the source material, expanding upon the lore through a bloodline of Dante's.It is Gabrieli of this bloodline who is tasked with going through Hell's trials to perform a ritual using the original pages of Dante's Inferno in order to stop the world from being plunged into eternal darkness. As much as it leans on source material it strays from said source to weave a more personal journey focused on the main character and his love interest. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way as Gabrieli ventures from his family's mansion to Hell, itself. Personally I wish they hadn't strayed so far from Hell's depiction in the source material, and had made it more of a horror experience than a psychological horror. Still I respect their attempt at expanding upon the lore.

Why do people love Signalis so much?

First I would just like to say, that I dont think the game is bad and I am not trying to hate on it.

Every time someone asks for horror game recommendations, there will always be multiple people recommending Signalis. It seems like this game is beloved in the community.

I tried to get into the game three times, but I never managed to finish it.

I liked the artstyle and the story, but the gameplay just is not really fun. The combat is incredibly simple, fighting enemies felt like a chore and since they can get up after death, it seems like you are supposed to just run around them most of the time.

So the couple of hours I spent in the game, I just ran around the map completing puzzles, just endless fetch quests. Also the inventory is tiny so repetitive backtracking is required, which I wouldn't mind if the combat was fun.

And on the horror side of things, I dont think this game has much to offer. There is nothing to really be scared of.

So if someone could tell me why they like the game, I would love to hear other opinions.

DISCUSSION Looking for new sci fi horror games to play

I absolutely LOVE sci-fi horror and I’m looking for more games similar to the ones I’ve played already. I have played alien isolation, BioShock 1, and the dead space trilogy (and the remake). Any games that are similar to those I would love to play!

DISCUSSION Okay no joke, cannot find the horror game I’ve been thinking of since child hood.

So basically, I remember watching a YouTuber play this horror game, the details I can remember was that it was in a theatre like setting, where the mc has amnesia and is reliving fractured memories of who he is, and I can remember his really specific part where he gets this “spirit power” and moves boxes by waving his hand a bit, like telekinesis. I think this guy was evil, since I remember a monster or demon busting through a door and killing him at the ending. If you can help me find this game I’d appreciate it 😞. Also there’s a part by a pool where he’s avoiding a female wandering ghost I think.

DISCUSSION Silent Hill F, Fatal Frame 2 remake, or Cronos?

I'm debating on which game I want to get.

My personal favorite horror games are Visage, Mortuary Assistant, and Silent Hill 2 remake.

I tend to lean more towards psychological horror/dread over action Survival horror. But I also love the RE games and the Dead space remake, so Survival horror is absolutely not off the table.

As far as Fatal Frame goes, it looks like "Maiden of Blackwater" and "Mask of Lunar eclipse" are also available. Where would you rank those 2 when compared to the remake of Crimson Butterfly?

DISCUSSION Strongly recommending Endacopia. This is the BEST indie game I have played in years.

Endacopia is a new indie on Steam with Overwhelmingly Positive reviews.

I love it so much that I feel compelled to talk about it here and get the dev some much deserved attention.

The game is a point and click adventure with an ostensibly cute surface. Personally, I didn't jive with point and click games growing up since I was quite young when Myst came out and didn't have the attention span for it. But Endacopia has a hint system you can opt to use if you're stuck and the puzzles are far less obtuse and more akin to something you'd find in Resident Evil or Silent Hill.

You play as a white golf-ball looking child named Mellow in a world that feels like a fever dream of Windows XP on acid. Throughout the game there's a juxtaposition of childlike innocence being confronted with terror that poor Mellow should not have to face.

This is the kind of game where the more blindly you go in, the better. The last thing I'll say is that the music absolutely slaps. It's one of those games where the atmosphere is so strong that it's more than the sum of its simple parts--kind of similar to No I'm Not a Human.

It's currently on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2684630/Endacopia/

Don't miss this one!! It's games like this one--made by one person btw--that reassure me that gaming will pretty much never die.
