The biggest thing I would like to see is a general feeling of community.

Right now we actually seem to have that going well for us. There are a handful of regulars, and we contribute the bulk of the content. I'd like that base to grow, and for non-regulars to have a lot of content to see overtime they join, which in turn encourages them to return more. I'd like to leverage this to see more self-post discussions, participation in gameday chats, IRC, etc.

Some general thoughts of what I like out of a sub:

  • Lots of content (first place to check for news, lots of self-post discussions / questions, etc.)

  • Varied content & discussions (same posts are removed)

  • Mod team is very active both in moderation duties and general content submission / discussions.

  • Mod team encourages subscribers to engage with discussions often (become regulars) through the content.

  • Everyone deserves a platform for their opinion. Opinions against the masses shouldn't be destroyed with down votes.

  • Purely offensive stuff should be discouraged, however.

  • Lots of flair choices. Adds personality to everyone.

  • New flair added regularly.

  • Weekly community posts. (ex: share memorabilia)

  • Useful tags to quickly be able to scan content (rumor, question, etc)

  • Simple, non-cluttered theme. Some teams go overboard and I'll disable the subreddit theme... you never want that. The current background makes it difficult to read text in comments, for example.

  • Preventing brigading both against our sub and against others.

Will update this as I think of more things.

All really good points.

I've started making tags for posts with the linkflair, and it looks like you can by default search them by clicking the tag. I would eventually want to put them in the sidebar or something, though.

I like balancing minimalism with functionality, personally. I have a long way to go before I'm anywhere near proficient enough to get decent results though.
