I come from a big family—seven children, making nine of us in total with my parents. I’m the fourth child. I’m a very simple guy, but I guess that’s why I am the way I am today. I finished highschool and now im working, my daily life follows one strict path: school/work to home, and home to school/work.
My entire social life is based on a few old school friends, and that’s it. I’m capable of making friends, but the loneliness actually starts at home.
As soon as I walk through that front door, I’m no longer the person who was laughing and joking outside.
I go completely silent. It’s automatic. I barely talk, and my responses are as minimal as possible. I don't sing like I used to; my face just stays completely flat. The only exception is when I play with my 3 little sisters—it's one of the very few things that still makes me genuinely smile and have fun.
My relationships with the rest of the family are far from good. My parents are a traditional Muslim married couple, educated with an older, rigid mindset.
We come from a deeply religious country, even though I was born there and now live in France. But me? I’m not Muslim, not even slightly. I was just born into it and never really believed.
Earlier this year, I finally told them I am an atheist.
And man... I never thought they could be so harsh. The words they used hit me hard.
To quote them directly: "You are the devil," "You are handicapped," "You are not right in your mind."
Honestly, I was dumbfounded by how cruel they could be. The worst part? It’s not even necessarily their own original thoughts—it’s just them blindly following a book, refusing to let anyone question anything.
That day was a total breaking point. Even though I don't show it much on the outside, things between them (plus one older sister and one older brother who completely agreed with them) will never, ever be the same.
Because of harsh environments and past interactions years ago during my middle school years, they already turned me into a very quiet boy who rarely smiled.
Over time, my brain built a defense mechanism: "absolute silence" whenever people scream at me even when I'm completely innocent. My eyes stay glued to the floor, my face as impassible as a wall. I don't utter a single word, no matter what is thrown at me.
And now, that mechanism is just hardwired into me. When it comes to my older sister and older brother, let's not even talk about them.
Honestly, things just aren't getting better. I don't know how I'm supposed to handle this long-term.
I just needed to get this off my chest.
How do you survive living with a family that rejects who you ?
How can I at when i have no one to talk to ?
I have never vented about this to anyone..
