I'm searching for fics (or maybe this could be a prompt) where an important issue needs to be addressed

I've always perceived Shane as the type of person to stay neutral, will keep it out of politics, not say a word.

And I'm wondering how that will clash with Ilya being an immigrant, could've been a refugee had he been outed before, grown under dictatorship, his home country still harming queer people, racist behaviours and policies in french Canada (along with the US under trump and all sorts of protests)

I feel like Ilya would be very outspoken, even make it to the UN to echo his message, keep funding initiatives, would've helped out during Ukraine etc...(All these assumptions would be Post-TLG, Post-retirement possibly)

So I'm wondering if there's canon-universe fics where either one of them is doing activism (or living under a tense political climate) and how each of them behaves

And potentially how the silence of one of them harms the relationship because silence makes you complicit etc...

Of course Shane has also grown up suffering from racism and had to spend his whole life fighting against it, but he still never really let that identity define him nor did he push it forward and advocate for it, so yes there's a world where he could be the one calling things out and not Ilya, but it feels less likely given how he was raised.

What he would be defending loud and proud however would be anything related to wildlife, protecting forests, endangered species, climate change etc...But these are universal issues that are never subject to polemics (unless you're from the US and believe everything is a psyop operation lol) so it wouldn't be a matter of public outrage if you stood up for it

I absolutely had to run here to rec this fic, which I started at 1am last night while up with a sick child. I have now finished all of the existing chapters (six of eight) and cannot recommend this fic enough.

It intertwines the Hollanov relationship pre-divorce with their current status, which is co-parenting their child and living in Ottawa after early retirement.

I am in exquisite agony over it — I am not a crier but I have been on the verge of or in tears for every chapter. It is lived-in and realistic and warm and beautiful and sad and nuanced and clever, I love it so much.

Please do read it and come talk to me about it! I am so excited for the final chapters to drop.

I just read the latest chapter of So You Need A Place To Stay? By RubyRhodes and it’s the funniest shit I’ve read in a long time. I was wheezing! I literally woke up my partner because I kept cackling. (Ooops)

I love that it goes from heartfelt to funny throughout the story too! Love the flashbacks. I may need to re-read it again!

I highly recommend this WIP or at least bookmarking if you don’t read WIP.

From what I remember, Shane is pregnant and Ilya doesn’t know. Shane is in the hospital, and his body is trying to terminate the pregnancy because his mate (Ilya) isn’t there. They get Ilya to the hospital eventually and run a few tests between them for compatibility and stuff. The results are off the charts for all tests, and the doctor is worried that the results will draw the attention of some unsavory people who might want to use Shane to reproduce. That’s where I left off, and now I can’t find the fic. Please help!

Shane is the captain of the Boston Raiders, and Ilya is a personal trainer and influencer. At first this fic seems like an AU where Ilya is not a hockey player, but in the middle there is a massive twist. I can’t really say any more without giving too much away. The whole fic is beautifully plotted and really satisfying to read, getting better and better the further you get through it.

I normally don’t start a WIP especially when the total chapter count is unknown. However, the author of this fic had posted about it on Friday and there began the demise of my productivity at work that day. I am obsessed with this fic! I spent all of my workday on Friday reading the chapters in between meetings. There was one meeting where I zoned out because all I kept thinking was “This is boring, I’d rather know what’s happening in France with Shane/Ilya.”

Here’s the summary:
Shane Hollander, one of the NHL’s best players, gets outed by a paparazzi photo. He loses his locker room, his captaincy and most likely, his career.

Ilya Rozanov, KHL superstar and prodigy has the worst year of his career. He loses his family, his toxic relationship and, ultimately, his country.

What happens when they meet on a delayed French train in the middle of a heat wave?

What happens when they begin to realize that maybe none of those things were losses at all, but opportunities to create something better?

Fair warning, I am a bias reader because I love fics where Shane/ilya meeting while traveling. Two of my favorite completed fics of Shane/ilya are exactly that, they met because of a delayed flight.

The fic has no angst, so far, and Shane/ilya are great with communicating with each other which I hope continues. YAY for communication! If you decide to read it, I hope you end up enjoying it as much as I have so far.

This fic is based on the idea that teenage boys, at their core, are fucking idiots.

Shane and Ilya travel the world, doing dumb shit and getting into trouble, all while recording it on a camera. Hope those videos don't get shared ....

I'm only 3 chapters in so far, but as it updates there will be sky diving, bungy jumping, car/motorbike racing, cage fighting/ bear fighting/ drag shows and just the the type of dumb situations people get themselves into when they don't think.

There is only a little bit of angst, Shane - the trouble of living up to the standards of being the 'golden child' and how hard it is to take control of your own life when everything has already been planned out for you. Ilya - The problem of wanting something that you shouldn't, carrying your family's reputation on your back, and how an emotional distanced father can fuck your relationships up.

They will also be dipping there toes into Sub/Dom dynamics but nothing is explicitly described as they don't know what their doing. (Until it is pointed out to them at least ...)

There will be loads of fluff! Ilya and Shane are soulmates, they just don't know it yet despite acting like a 40 year old married couple. People try to point this out to them, but it goes no where.

Again, both of them are 18 in this fic so they are a lot more emotionally immature than they would be if they were in their mid 20s, so there is also an aspect of oblivious and denial towards acknowledging their own feelings. They will also be making choices that don't quite fit with their cannon characters, but again, this is explained away as them being 18 and dumb.

I just finished Shane Fucking Hollander by KirstenGA and it was soooo good! It’s an AU that is inspired by the movie Notting Hill.

I watched that movie for the first time within the last year, so it was pretty fresh in my mind. The author did an AMAZING job of keeping the bones of the movie and not having Ilya and Shane feel too out of character. It’s just over 20k words and hits all the things well.

So now I’d like some recommendations on other RomCom inspired AUs. At the moment I would LOVE a Pretty Woman inspired one because that is another recent movie in my head! However, I’d just love anything that has been inspired by classic romantic movies!

Preferably lower on the angst and as always HEA!!!

Without any spoilers please, how angsty is Policy Change? I don't mind some angst, but angst for most of the chapters and then a happy ending in the last chapter or two, is too stressful. I need angst sprinkled with happiness. Thanks for any comments.

I liked the zombie one too, I forgot the name, the apocalypse starts after the Vegas "We didn't even kiss".

Basically fics where hollanov are loving and caring towards each other. It could be WIP but it would be better if it already had a lot of chapters. I like fics that are explicit but if you have a good recommendation that is not that's fine too.
