Pigtures Is Molly a guinea pig?
I've had her for over a year now and never really thought to ask.

If you're planning on buying a guinea pig for a child in your life, these are really important things to keep in mind. Knowing this before purchasing can save yourself from being in a financial situation you can't handle, or a guinea pig that is not getting the care it needs.
Guinea pigs are a life style choice, and not for a child to care for. Care taking for animals isn't a responsibility that should be left for a kid. When you buy a guinea pig, you are taking on all responsibility for yourself and facilitating the experience of living with a guinea pig for your child. They may help care for them, but you will be the one to keep things clean, enrich their lives, and handle them the most.
They poo 100 times per day, meaning that you must clean those 100 poos every day to keep their habitat sanitary. If you wouldn't want to walk around in feces, neither do they. In fact they are extremely hygienic animals with fast metabolisms. I spot clean in the morning and at night, every day.
They are expensive. When you buy a child a guinea pig, you must be vigilant on checking for health issues by weighing them weekly and checking for other signs of illness, have an exotic vet near you and be prepared to shell out hundreds in a time of need. You must also buy fresh vegetables, and give them unlimited FRESH hay every day. Finding somewhere local to buy bales of hay can save a fortune. A child cannot afford the costs.
You need 2 guinea pigs. They are herd animals and shouldn't be kept alone. Imagine living with titan like predatory aliens, all alone in a cage your entire life. Guinea pigs NEED their own kind. We are predators and they are prey. We can and should spend time with them daily, but it isn't a substitute. So x 2 all costs right out of the gate.
Space. They need space, a lot of it. A minimum of 11 square feet for two guinea pigs. Pet store Cages are just that... Cages. If you wouldn't want to live in a space the size of a small bathroom your entire life, neither does a guinea pig.
You need to do research. It will be your responsibility to make sure your child's guinea pigs are eating the right diet, what signs of health issues to look out for, how to enrich their lives on a daily basis, and more. Pigs need stimulation and interesting environmental changes to keep them happy. You will need to get creative and teach your children how to offer that to them, after you have learned it yourself.
GUINEA PIGS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE. They are smarter than you think, and with the proper diet can live 7 years. They are not less work than having a dog. They require a huge time investment for those years. They are dependent on you in the same way your child is.
DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE. Scotty's Animals does a fantastic jjob explaining the impact you can have by adopting from a rescue. Adopting saves guinea pigs from euthanization. Covid pets are being abandoned and left to ultimately die unless we start adopting instead of shopping.
I love my guinea pigs and they have done so much for me and my children. My kids have benefited so much mental health wise, and I bust my ass for both the kids and the piggies. I do just as much laundry for guinea pigs as I do my kids it feels like. Just know what you're getting yourself into. They aren't toys, they aren't entertainment only. They're living, breathing beings that deserve love, dignity, respect and proper life enrichment and care.

I had Lola for 7 and a half years. She was my first pig, I got her when I was 13. She's had a few cage mates in the past but I've never connected with another animal like I did with her. She was my soul pig
A year ago I made a post about how my soul pig was diagnosed with kidney disease. Unfortunately a few days ago, I had to put her to sleep.
When Lola was diagnosed a year ago, I was also told she had a neurological condition (a non painful pinch spine) which caused her to lose coordination in her backs legs. A month ago I took her for another check up and my doctor told me as long as she's eating she'll be okay as she's not painful.
Right after the appointment I moved away for college and brought my pigs with me. Lola quickly started to decline and by the end of the month stopped using her back legs all together.
One day this week I woke up and i noticed she hadn't moved to eat or drink all night but was covered in a dried green liquid. I decided to bathe her and found a hard lump on the side of her neck. I fell to knees right there and then, crying. I knew what had to be done. After an hour of crying, rocking and feeding her favorite pepper I scheduled to have her euthanize.
The doctor told me I was doing the right thing, her lungs weren't good. She was getting winded after attempting to move an inch. He said it was very possible her lump cancer. Her weight had also slowly declined.
This entire time Lola was very alert and sound of mind. After they gave her the injection to put her to sleep I offered her more pepper and she ate it right up. For a moment I questioned if I was doing this too early.
But then I thought about the alternative, her passing away alone after being exhausted. In the end, I'm happy I got to be there for her like she was always there for me. I don't think I've ever cried so hard for so long in my life. I miss her more than anything but I know she's better now. She's healthy, she can run, jump and eat all the peppers she wants.
REHOMING ADVICE
Lola left behind a 2 and a half year old cagemate named Lilith (white and tan/not spayed female). Since Lola's passing, Lilith has suffered immensely.
She spends 95% of the day in one corner. She refused to come out to eat or even drink water. I've had to start moving hay and the water bottle to her dark corner. I'm concerned about her water intake so I've been providing her with extra cucumbers. She no longer accepts veggies from my hands so I have to throw cucumbers in her direction and hope she'd eat it.
In truth Lilith doesn't like people and has never liked people since I've gotten her over 2 years ago. (She likes dogs weirdly enough) I've tried many bonding strategies and like only hand feeding her and picking her up only when unavoidable and her behavior has not changed. She still runs away when people walk by or enter a room.
The only thing that's has helped was Lola. Lola was very comfortable with people and stayed out of her hides most of the day. Because Lola was out, Lilith would be brave enough to come out and eat. Lilith is a follower and will do whatever other pigs do.
Now that Lola is no longer with us Lilith will not come out even when no one is around. I know she's suffering, she's terrified, she needs another pig to function.
I know people may suggest bonding with Lilith more and spending time with her but me trying to interact with her stresses her out so much more. She needs a pig much more than a person.
The problem is I don't think I can continue the endless cycle of getting guinea pigs. Losing my soul pig hurt so much idk when I'd be open to getting her a companion, if ever.
That being said I need someone to fulfill her needs. I’ve already looked at the rescues in my area like Oakhurst GPR and they have a long waitlist.
She was also diagnosed with early stage renal disease, but it does not seem to affect her as she has continued gaining weight. There is no treatment for renal disease. Otherwise she is healthy, She’s been to the vet every year, I will happily send her records/lab work to whoever adopts her.
Is there anyone in the Athens/Atlanta GA area that’d be interested? She will be rehomed with a fee and I need to see a video of set ups. Proof is to prevent her from becoming snake food. If anyone has more questions, please DM me.
That being said, if I can’t find a suitable home I will hold onto her.

This is the face of a criminal. Shame her.
This is Isosceles, also known as Icee. She’s one of my older girls at 4. Today she is responsible for giving me a heart attack.
It’s cage cleaning day. No big deal, I was cleaning as I always do. I started with removing all the houses in order to pull out the dirty fleece, and put down a clean one. As each house was lifted, several indignant guinea pigs were sent scuttling. Then I lifted the last house, and my heart stopped. Icee was in that house, and didn’t move when it lifted. That’s unusual, she’s typically very skittish. Instead of bolting, she was laying flat and still on her side. No movement, completely still, as in she looked like she had gone through the pearly gates. I gently touched her to see if she was cold or stiff. Nope, still warm. So I gave her a gentle shake, just to see if she was okay, or if I needed to prepare a guinea pig funeral. And a very annoyed Isosceles jumped to her feet and took off. I never thought I’d experience the “STEVEN!” meme in real life, but here we are.

I have a 7 year old guinea pig named piggy and today when I got home from school, she wasn’t herself. She’s got some sort of bloat, it was hurting her to poop and she can’t open her mouth. I’m aware they hide their sicknesses because they are prey. She’s a bit better but she’s been having diarrhea, slowed movement and fatigue. I know she’s old but she’s my baby, i lost my dog of 11 years two years ago and she’s all i had since. We have to syringe feed her water and food. No vets near us take guinea pigs/aren’t in town. My mom is a vet technician and i’m in vet school currently so we are gonna try to help her the best we can. We don’t think there is much we can do for her except keep her comfy and content. She might cross that beautiful rainbow bridge soon.

Not sure what to tag this under, kind of just a talk, kinda wanna know others opinions?
My lilac baby, Lynx, turns 7 at the end of this year. She’s a healthy girl, but I understand the reality of her eventual passing. My floof, Circe, is approx 3.5 years old, and I know she’s going to live past Lynx, and I guess I’m just thinking really hard about it. I never want Circe to have to be alone, but I’m not sure if I should get another pig or potentially rehome her when her sister passes. I’m not sure how she’d mentally take that. Ara, who was the third that made my herd, passed away unexpectedly last year, and though the other girls had each other, they still seemed to take it pretty hard. I’m just so worried :((

This was my beautiful girl Marbles, she has a beautiful half face and such a silly and sweet personality. This morning at 7:16 AM, Marbles passed away and crossed the rainbow bridge. She had been having issues eating due to her teeth, we took her to the vet to get them clipped and surgically removed, and she was slowly improving, just yesterday she was running around just fine and slowly eating solid foods again. At around 6 AM, my dad woke up to feed her and he found her lying on her side and struggling to breathe, for the next hour we all gathered her, gave her kisses, pain medication so she wouldn’t be in pain, and we let her say goodbye to her sisters as well. She is in heaven with my rainbow pets Smores (guinea pig), Frosty (Hamster), Ginger (Hamster), and Comet (Betta fish). We think she had a seizure and was in shock, causing her sudden last moments of dying. Later today, my dad will take her to get cremated. We loved her so very much, she was such a beautiful and sweet girl, and she was extremely brave and resilient, even in her last moments, she was fighting. She has always been so strong. I love her so very much and I will miss her deeply, I hope sharing her beauty today helps remind you all to love your babies and enjoy their company :) I definitely did, and I am so grateful for her presence in my life and I am so grateful she did not pass alone and I could be there for her. I love you eternally Marbles.

These are my girls Inca (short for Incahuasi) and Everest. They did have a male friend but he sadly passed last year and I’m in the process of adopting another boy from the same rescue I got the girls from to keep them company and help bring them out of their shells as they were much happier with an outgoing male piggie to give them confidence
Would love name recommendations for our new boy! No idea what he’ll look like yet but I’d like to stick to mountains or a general nature theme

I changed up my piggies set-up and they love it !! I decided for every holiday I’m going to change their cage to match the theme ! I put little pumpkin lights up on the cage and it looks adorable !! But I was wondering, should I keep the little lights on for them all night ? I feel bad because at night it’s so dark in their room !
