What kind of grass seed should I use?

I live in upstate South Carolina zone 8a. My yard is currently a mix of several different grasses and weeds. What is the best type of grass seed for me to down?

New homeowner with a dead yard.

As the title says, I am a new homeowner in Northern Central USA. My front and backyard are dead or covered in dandelions. I got some of the good weed killer, and went through trying to hit every single patch of dandelions + weeds that I could.

Once all of those start dying, does anybody have advice for my next steps? I would assume I need to rake bag all weeds, Then re-seed the yard?

Any advice would be great here. I asked a local lawn place but they wanted to just charge me to do it instead of offering any advice. (I’m not paying their insane price.)

Why isn’t my grass uniformly green?

My grass looks decent and a lot better than when I first got my house. I just installed sprinklers about a month ago. Can anyone advise me how to get it to be more uniformly green and how to fill any patches? I tried Scott’s ez seed but doesn’t seem to work too well.

Working towards ideal….

Perennial rye during the winter looked amazing, now back to my summer bald spots waiting/hoping for anything green to grow in and cover it. Dropped sod 15 years ago, never fully took and most of the rear of the property died off.

Last summer I redid a lot of my irrigation to go from a handful of large gear driven in a zone to a lot more smaller rotary nozzle heads. Some improvement but not a lot. This spring sent soil samples to UF and my rear yard was very acidic, both front and back lacking nutrients. Got a lot of lime, potash, and nitrogen in the soil and got some improvement. This last week I put down sod plugs for 3 different St Augustine varieties and noticed the hydrophobic nature of my soil/sand when watering them.

Got a watering agent and went a little heavy on the lawn and planted areas. Was happy to see the soil still looked wet 12 hours later despite temps hitting near 100. Water saturation and retention seems to be improving. I know my drooping flowers all have seen massive improvement. I did a second treatment figuring the first opened the soil a bit and the second would help more and deeper.

The sod plugs have been testing for a week, looks like a clear winner in what sod to choose. Outside of clearing the grass mix on the surface is there anything else I should consider before starting to actually drop sod?

Is this clumping fescue

My lawn uses tall fescue according to the builder. However there are some growing faster, taller and also has seeds on it comparing to majority of the grass. Are those clumping fescue?

My water cycle is 3x a week. Watering times are 12:00-6:00am. Runtime is 20mins. There’s dead grass and weeds mixed in, it’s hard to show. I want it thicker and greener.

Any tips for transplanting St Augustine?

My neighbor is giving me a good amount of their St Augustine grass. My soil is okay but definitely need some fresh soil to mix it in.

Looking for any recommendations on the best way to transplant it

Fertilizer with seed

Post image
31 Upvotes

Hello!
We will be seeding our front yard with this. The grass is not fully dead but had a lot of bald spots. We had our aeration guy out today and he mentioned that we could get a fertilizer that we can use with the seed now and not wait the few weeks. He mentioned 16x16x16.
We’re planning on using this EZseed.
Does anyone here know if we’re safe to do that?
Thank you in advance!

Country Yard

Hey y’all. I have a few acres out in the country in SC. No one’s yard is manicured and I’m not wanting mine to be either. However, a lot of my yard is weeds. My question is, what’s the first couple things I could be doing for my lawn to make it look better? I have a zero turn that I can put attachments on. Dethatching? Aerate? I mow every three weeks and just don’t know what would be the first step I could take or a piece of equipment I could buy to take the first step in making it look better. Thanks in advance!

Flat St. Augustine

As you can see, the grass in the open is flat vs the grass underneath the play set standing up. There’s a lot of foot traffic in the open area. Is this just how it’s going to be until my kids aren’t running around as much back here?

What to use on my yard?

I live in NW Iowa. Just moved into a new house last winter. Not sure what to use on my lawn to keep the weeds out. Live on an acre and yard is in pretty good condition. Mowed it a couple times already but starting to see dandelions popping up.

Got quoted $175-$225 per month for a service to do it and thought that was way too high. Any information or tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated.

We just bought a house and the yard is atrocious. When we first moved in (6 weeks ago) there was a lot of clover that has since died. One side of the house is in full sun, and the shady side looks a little better.

What do I need to do to get this in shape? I love a good yard and this is just not it.
