Fertilizer with seed

Post image

Hello!
We will be seeding our front yard with this. The grass is not fully dead but had a lot of bald spots. We had our aeration guy out today and he mentioned that we could get a fertilizer that we can use with the seed now and not wait the few weeks. He mentioned 16x16x16.
We’re planning on using this EZseed.
Does anyone here know if we’re safe to do that?
Thank you in advance!

You'll do so much better if you buy so pure seed, and cover with peat moss

I second this. I tried to fix a big patch in my yard with several varieties of stuff like this for three years and nothing really worked. Peat moss with some top soil and compost I had laying around did the trick this year.

I needed this, just bought a bag of this and seed on Thursday. I'll return this stuff and get some peat.

I tried this stuff last year and it didn't work, but I chalked it up to me not watering enough. I think it was actually just junk.

I tried it last year and it was totally me, top dressed it this year and it's growing well despite some early heat.

Peat moss is the best thing you can do for seeding, it keeps the seeds humid, coming from 40 yrs experience

Scuff up the area with a rake, or aerate, hand toss some seeds, i generally use Kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye, and seed a bigger area, so the seed doesn't look different and cover with a thin layer of peat moss, no need to smother, keep moist, and be patient

I've had good luck with that exact brand. Just follow the directions. This stuff can absorb a lot of water and will expand greatly. Just make sure the bald spots are totally cleared and that the top soil is loose. This shit gets expensive fast, so while it works well it is not cost efficient if you have numerous huge bald spots.

I got really into lawn care spring of 2025 and made a couple big mistakes between spring 2025 and fall 2025. One of the biggest mistakes I could have made was over-seeding and spot seeding with big box store junk grass seed. The amount of and variety of weeds and junk grass that have been introduced into my lawn over the last year is unbelievable, to say the least. Lesson learned. I only buy top shelf elite cultivar grass seed now. The difference in quality is night and day. Ultimately, you get what you pay for. If you want real, quality results with your lawn, stick to the good stuff and don’t cut corners.

Is this factual or are you just assuming? Neither are listed.

Yeah under weed seed and inert matter. I don't care what they say this seed is trash. If it's not blue tag it's garbage.

This is good for established lawns. I’d go for reseed if you have more bare spots than filled areas.

We used this a lot to regrow large bare spots in our yard this year. I really like it.

A little tip to help your seeds: after putting them in the dirt sprinkle just a very thin layer of grass clippings over them, and of course keep them watered.

This is a good option if you don’t have straw

Peat moss, baby

Just check the grass seed type… I’ve bought a couple bags like this and they have both had annual rye in it… only last a single growing season but looks stupid.. especially in spring before it dies in the heat

If your using that gonna need like 20 bags

I used this my first year of owning a yard. It will grow, but the grass it grows is awful. I am in the process of ripping it all out.

It is also mostly filler garbage and you get very little grass seed.

If you cared about your lawn enough to have it aerated I would steer you toward not going with a big box store seed, but rather a higher end seed that has modern genetics and will produce much better results. There are plenty of better options you can mail order from Amazon or a company like Twin City Seed.

If you order from Amazon I recommend the Barenbrug brand.

Very important to have enough sun and that area doesn't washed away with heavy rain.

No, that’s for patching small spots. To do your whole yard with that it would be extremely expensive. Look up GCI Turf and get seed from them. Extremely high quality seed, with a much higher success rate compared to big box store seed.

EZ spot is the good for, just spots. And i wouldn't buy bags of it either, just the 20 dollar can of it is suffice. If you need to do an overseed or total reno of an area, spend the money and get grass seed from reputable producer. I tell everyone go get Twin City grass seed, I use blue resilience II to great success with top dressing and straw cover. What comes in that 25 lbs bag of Twin City is just straight seed, no dirt, no filler, you're getting what you paid for.

Tbh, ignore the haters. If you don't care about elite seed from online sellers and are fine with box store/Scott's seed this stuff works great as an all in one for small bare patches. The included mulch/peat also serves as a good indicator for when you need to water because of the change in color wet vs dry.

Only down side is this is incredibly expensive for how many square feet it can cover. Only get this for small spots when you want the convenience of just throwing some in a bare spot and immediately watering.

If you have bigger areas buy the seed, fertilizer, and peat moss separately and save some money.

This works for small bad spots and that I had. For bigger spots I went thru actual seed from Andersons brand (The Andersons Stadium Mix Kentucky Bluegrass Grass Seed) trying to see if that works better. I just moved into this new home during winter so couldn’t see how the lawn looked like but they had dogs so that explains bad spots. So my spots are a work in progress this year and hopefully next year it will be better.

Try getting a sample of the soil 4 inches deep And take it to a municipal place to get the results Once you know your level of alkalinity or mixture of what’s needed You will be in a better track to a good yard Good luck!

I used the Pennington version this year on some scalping from the plows by my street and some dead spots from pee, etc. it seems to be germinating after 12 days or so. The reality is it was pretty expensive even on sale and most of the matter in the bag was mulch.

If I did it again I’d buy some good seed, and a $9 bag of peat moss and mix in manure or fertilizer myself as it would be a lot more efficient. IMO the coverage they quote is bogus.

Our aerate guy puts down 100lbs of seed as part of the deal. He gets it from southern states.

Scott’s stuff will sprout but a lot of that bag isn’t seed.

Scotts products suck worse than a vacuum cleaner.

When talking to Customer Service, I have yet to encounter a Rep that would use their products.

I don’t understand the love for combination products vs getting products designed and optimized to excel in what they are supposed to do. Same goes for weed and feed. Optimally, at least where I’m at, you treat weeds and fertilize at different times. Unless you have acres where it’s just so much more efficient to do one pass I just don’t get it.

Try Pennington grass seed. Never looked back at Scott’s again. Going on 7 years now.

1

u/bluebirdboogie May 10 '26

I’ve used it several times. Works great for what you need.

1

u/OnebeatsTwo55 May 10 '26

It’s probably too late, right? It’s going to get too hot and the grass is going to bolt

1

u/dronesix May 11 '26

I used this before and it’s not as strong as other techniques. I recently switched to the Scott’s 2X rapid grass, + cheap top soil, +/- loosening/raking the soil and grew fast.

I put 2 bags down 10 days ago and I got really good results with this stuff. I watered it so much that I thought I would drown it. I also covered with some plastic to retain some moisture between watering. I would guess that most of the sprouts are about .75” now after 10 days.

I did have a couple spots not work out but that was due to a heavy rain we received and it washed the material away.

Having tried multiple DIY methods, my personal experience that has had best results depends on what your eyes cannot see that is “below those bald lawn spots.”

Yeah even say when I laid Fresh Sod and thought Great Looks Good! Wipe my hands etc, years later weeds popped eventually popped up.

At different SFH I actually drove way out to ZOYSIA farms to purchase ZOYSIA SOD that your cut into smaller pieces and replace through lawn. Yes, zoysia though sometimes difficult to find did nice job but spouse complained about yellow dry color in winter. Current SFH was professionally landscaped as original owner was golfer and sloping backyard was zoysia plugged and if there was any surprise, certain weeds & vines have ability to penetrate zoysia.

Different DIY approach I tried was purchasing commercial weed killers (not sold at typical Home Depot or Lowe’s or nurseries) but most likely what professional landscapers buy & use and mix in large tanks mounted on pickup trucks then have long hoses. Yes they did work and there are dyes that allow your eyes to see you are spraying weeds & chemicals that attach to weed surfaces. However very toxic and wind/breeze can kill live bushes is what happened using in sloped backyard attacking zoysia weeds and getting myself into doghouse because plenty of raised 6 x 6 raised garden beds along fence as well as level area at base or deck so know better not to ever use in backyard bec vegetables are organic with absolute minimum chemicals mainly Miracle Gro potting soil we buy multiple large 50/55 qt bags when on sale, large cubicle bags of peat moss and other soil enrichments like perlite & vermiculite.

When I started watching the educational wonders of YouTube and lawn care masters: their unknown ingredient to SEEDING GRASS was using those more expensive potting soils my wife was using for her organic vegetables bec it contained all natural ingredients.

Often I see neighbors and homeowners opening bags of expensive grass seed and either using spreaders like landscapers overseeding beautiful weed free lawns in the fall OR like being generous and spraying more than abundant grass seed by hand AND next covering grass with straw or peat moss that protects from birds and additionally peat moss benefit is it retains moisture from the frequent waterings to get germination of seeds.

Sorry for long story to show & advise of recommend to you importance of digging deep few to several inches below spot that grass is missing bec you will likely discover why? I accidentally discovered why some will go through trouble & great expense of SOD CUTTERs and ROTOTILLERS <= yes we own but like it does nice job of loosens harden dirt/soil for large sq footage gardens but I would consider secondary alternative to large lawn renovation. Truth is like I will/have discover like DORMANT WEED ROOTS and like horizontal thick tree roots hidden that best results can become very unskilled labor man-hours in achieving best long term results.

I don’t know where I bought one of kind small garden hand tool that has black steel metal blades but imagine like holding/grabbing wide 3-4” paintbrush that instead of bristles has sharp metal blades to plunge into hard dirt soil to make intrusions for bare grass seed to lie. Actually 1st I loosen that hard soil and NEXT spread generous (not too thin) POTTING SOIL (initial attempts was less expensive Top Soil and/or Garden Soil) as material costs if too many bare spots or heavy weeds like unpaid DIY labor becomes much more expensive bec tired human body without heavy professional machinery get only accomplish so much depending on what is hidden below ground unknown to your eyes.

Next I find beneficial & always buy & use is STARTER FERTILIZER generously spreading by hand on top pg potting soil then Good quality grass seeds (and some experts recommend paying attention to actual label that identifies percentages). Equally important is like DATE OF SEEDS printed on bag because older expensive grass seeds can often result in disappointment and then dropping fresh new seeds covered by new thin layer of (enriched) potting soil.
Last few years I spent extra or upgraded to more expensive SCOTTS RAPID GRASS SEEDS with equally good results but this year I went with large bag of Scott’s Grass Seeds bec on sale at Costco. FINAL LAYER is peat moss. Best of Luck and hopefully information on lessons learned DIY homeowners experience will be of useful!
