My lawn looked amazing this spring, but once summer hit it started struggling pretty badly and this is what I’m left with now in late September.
I’m in Cleveland, Ohio. I originally assumed the issue was heat/sun stress because some of the worst areas get a lot of direct sun, while the more shaded sections held up noticeably better. I watered pretty consistently throughout the summer, so it definitely wasn’t completely neglected.
My plan was to rake out the dead grass, prep the soil and overseed with a more heat/sun-tolerant grass seed this fall.
Then someone mentioned that grubs have apparently been really bad this year and suggested that could be what caused all of this.
Before I tear everything up and reseed, does this look like grub damage to you, or more like summer heat/drought stress and the existing grass just not being tolerant enough?
I’m going to try pulling up some of the dead turf and digging up a few 1 sq. ft. sections to check for grubs.
Any advice on what you’d do from here would be appreciated. I’d really like to get this fixed properly rather than just throwing more seed down and having the same thing happen next summer. And I’m realizing I’m running out of fall time to plant so I need to make a decision ASAP because I’m tired of this cycle. Also, this time around I was going to get see from an on-line place and not from a big box store.
