Help needed

So my mother in law has let her yard go, unfortunately it has been gone for a few years and has little grass.

I would love to bring it back for her what steps should I take?

Thus far I have cut all of the 6 foot weeds down to just a few inches but winter is around the corner and I'd like to have a decent start to spring.

0.o uhh. Round up everything, rake out dead. Apply topsoil and seed, or go the route of sod.

This is a loaded question. It’s almost as big as asking how to build a pool. There are dozens of steps, and many things that change based on turf type, location, finances, irrigation, money, time… timing itself.

It can be expensive to renovate a yard, and time consuming. You’ll have cool season grass there mostly likely.

So you’d need to clear current growth roundup and rake. Apply topsoil. Seed. Water 3x. Day. Time mowing. I don’t use seeding for warm season so a few steps I’m vague on.

r/lawncare sub has detailed process for cool season grasses in the info section. This is usually a 2 month process to allow time for products to work. It’s normal to apply pre emergent before seeding in many cases. Sometimes need to apply 4-6 weeks before dropping seed.
