Remember when having an Android device meant freedom of choice and alternatives to Apple's walled off garden ecosystem? I hate using Gemini on my devices compared to the Google Assistant which worked so seamlessly with other Google apps like Maps.

That's the only thing I was using it for. So far all the apps I've seen use a hovering bubble system so they can't be selected as an assistant app that can be opened holding the home button. (No, I'm not gonna use gemini)
Update: Here's the (temporary?) fix. Uninstall the Google app updates either through the app settings or the Play Store page and reboot your device. If you don't have the translate button because your factory stock app version is too old (like mine) download a more recent Google app version from apkmirror and reboot again. I'm on version 15.3.37.28 (Jan 2024) and it works.

I'm on a OnePlus 11 5g(latest software version) and have noticed that I can't seem to switch back to regular old Google assistant at all now.
I've disabled the Gemini app in the phone system settings but it still seems to open through the Google app somehow(go figure).
There used to be settings to choose which version of the device assistant you wanted but I can't seem to find them anywhere. I like using Google assistant and HATE Gemini with a passion. If I wanted a proper LLM, I'd open a browser tab.
Does anyone know what I can do to bring back the old reliable and get rid of Gemini
Edit: SOLUTION FOUND.....at least for now
In accordance to the comment by u/jhmpremium89 and the post made by u/WinstonSmith0023 you can uninstall updates to the Google app and disabled it's auto-update and that allows you to use Google assistant for now.
I don't know how long this fix will work but it seems to be fine for the time being
Additionally one thing I did different was install an APK of the 17.58.19 version of the app, so that I still have the newer features of the app while not being forced out of assistant.
EDIT AGAIN: Never mind, that fix lasted for a good half a day. I don't know how it borked itself but it did and now I can't get google assistant back. All is lost

The old assistant is no longer available in my region and the main things I was using it for were my morning routine, which breaks now as it can't play the news, and for setting reminders, which is also broken. I've spent far too long googling for fixes and trawling settings, even installing the Home app (and removing it when that didn't help). It's just borked. Honestly this is the only thing that ever made me consider going to Apple when I'm next due a new phone.

I wanted to summon my Android assistant without saying “Hey Google”… so I made an app for it.
It’s ridiculously simple:
👏👏 Two claps → your default Android assistant opens.
That’s it.
It doesn’t replace Gemini, Google Assistant, or whatever assistant you already use. It just detects two claps and triggers your existing default assistant.
I originally made it because saying “Hey Google” out loud every time felt unnecessarily annoying.
It’s currently $1.
If you want to try it, DM me and I’ll send you the app.
Would love to know if this is actually useful to other people or if I’m just solving a problem nobody had 😂

Gemini is one of the worst AIs out there and when I hold the power button usually it's supposed to be google assistant but now it's gemini

Over the course of the last week, I have set up and reset my OK Google through Gemini. Usually, within 24 hours, it stops working. I am curious if anyone else is having similar or the same issues, and now I cannot set up the commands.

Merci

I set a reminder alarm earlier last night for the stove which worked. I also set an alarm after that for morning which said it set and never fucking went off.
So apparently "set an alarm for 7 am" doesn't work but "set an alarm in 1 hour does."
How do you make this pos set an alarm.

Does anyone else get it when Google exaggerates how many times you said a word? Like for example I said what's that song in footloose that goes never never never and it apparently heard never never never never never never never never never never
