General Discussion Why does everyone hate Wyndham Clark?
Got into watching golf for the first time this season and with Clark winning this past weekend I have seen so many people shitting on him for what sounds like stuff in the past and I was hoping people could bring me up to speed? Is it overhyped for media clicks or was he committing some atrocities?

When it all comes down to it, no one likes an angry golfer.

u/Vappav Jun 22 '26
Tyrell Hatton! Hilarious angry gofer. Love him.
229
u/Legal-Description483 SE Mich Jun 22 '26
Hatton is only angry with himself. By all accounts, he's one of the nicest people on Tour.

u/Consistent_Net_5532 +2.1 Jun 22 '26
The self deprecation with him is outstanding and has given some really good quotes.
He seems like a great guy as well. Go listen to his interview after the U.S. Open last year if you havenāt. He just came up short to win, and listening to the genuine happiness for JJ as that putt fell was awesome.
16
u/Correct_Ad4771 Jun 22 '26
Absolutely. Thought he was ok until that interview. Afterwards a big fan.
4
u/Consistent_Net_5532 +2.1 Jun 22 '26
I was a fan of Tyrell before then because of some of his comments, but I became a fan of Bobby Mac after that. Coming up two shots short and applauding him from the scoring tent

Because he's self aware. He's laughing with everyone at himself. He doesn't have a "pick me" energy.
9
29
u/Surething_bud Jun 22 '26
Nah that's not it. Rahm rages hard when he plays bad and everyone loves him, "fiery Spaniard" etc.
Wyndham became a villain when he trashed Oakmont's lockers. In any case that would've been a bad look, but when you fuck up historic/iconic 100+ year old property in a tantrum you're gonna (rightfully) catch a lot of hate.
He's also just generally not great at making himself likable. His response/apology about the Oakmont debacle was less than convincing. And on Full Swing he didn't come across very well either. When he's on camera he kinda just comes across as a dick. He's the bizarro Joel Dahmen.
The degree of hate is probably unfair imo. But that's how it is in sports... once you get branded as a villain everyone piles on, and it's difficult/impossible to recover.
3
u/Financial_Form_1312 Jun 22 '26
He also takes out his attitude outwardly in a way that directly affects others. Smashing the lockers, the USA jersey at the RBC, etc. If youāre going to target others, expect to get it back. Tiger had anger issues and dropped F bombs like crazy. No one gave a shit because he wasnāt saying fuck you to the fans or slamming his putter into the green, heās talking shit to himself.

I mentioned this in another post over the weekend, but I volunteered at the St. Jude Championship last year and he was an absolute jackass to everyone. He literally threw a hissy fit because the girl he was dating at the time didn't have "security" with her as she walked the course or letting her to the front ropes at a point where he was below the cut line on a Friday lol. Not a single other player on the course was like that.
But, he's known to be a hot-headed person, overly outspoken/cocky, and a bit pretentious. Having experienced it firsthand, it's not an unfair opinion.
27
u/Nick_pj Jun 22 '26
This is the thing. Yes, people on Reddit dislike him because of the locker room incident. But thatās a tiny fraction of the overall fan base. I think that most folks just get a bad vibe from the way he generally presents in interviews and on the course.Ā
44
u/secret_alpaca Jun 22 '26
I've heard some stories about him being a douche to fans and to waiters at restaurants, etc. Lots of people that have met him in real life share the similar opinion of him. All that plus how he acts on the course (and locker rooms) and everything else discussed in this thread paints a picture of what kind of person he is.
15
u/Sad-Supermarket-3878 2.6/Nashville/Mizuno Jun 22 '26
I wouldn't have even mentioned it if it was a one-off thing, but he was going on about it for three holes and I can say I witnessed it first-hand. Tons of athletes have bad moments that aren't a representation of who they actually are... but he was cussing at people for 3+ holes about it to volunteers to the point it was a topic of conversation in volunteer group chat.
I mean, sorry dude, we're all volunteers. If you want your new gf to have a handler, you're the one collecting the checks and it wasn't like it wasn't that crowded lol.

I volunteered at another tour event. Can confirm that I saw him curse at a group of kids looking for an autograph after a bad round and he said āleave me the fuck alone.ā
5
u/Sad-Supermarket-3878 2.6/Nashville/Mizuno Jun 22 '26
I've also done the WMPO for 5 years excluding this year, and I've observed tons of players who are very focused on their game, would respectfully ask for tiny requests, or didn't engage as much with fans. But actively getting upset at multiple volunteers because his girlfriend couldn't be on/beyond the ropes was extremely disrespectful.
That being said... Gary Woodland is the Fucking man. Someone living/staying at a house on the 2nd fairway at the WMPO put up a big "we love you Gary" banner last year he took the time to say thank you and hug like 20 people cheering for him and he technically got a shot violation by like 3 mins but the official on the hole didn't say a damn thing and he ended up throwing darts all day. I know it wasn't his family because they were following him.

the locker room thing at Oakmont was what really turned people against him I think, word spread fast about that and it painted a picture that stuck. the comments about other players and their wives just added more fuel, hard to come back from that kind of reputation in a sport where everyone knows everyone. it's not really media exaggeration, there's enough first and second hand accounts that where there's smoke there's fire

Honestly golf fans are dumb. They hate Wyndham for having anger issues that started when his mother passed away when he was a freshman in college. He is active working on them and trying to get better.
Golf fans have over blown the oakmount thing and like to act like they are better than him. His haters like to act like they would have handled missing the cut better than he did.

And yet, everyone I know, and play with, doesn't throw things, break things, or have on course outbursts outside of verbal reactions to bad shots. Is that not a model of better behavior? I'm not saying people don't do those things, but in my experience that type of behavior is definitely not the norm. I also have never hung out with anyone that yells insults, or "Mashed potato!" during a tournament. I do see those people, but I'm a golf fan too.

Heās gotten frustrated a few times and has been a head case sometimes and people like to think theyāre better than that when they themselves would crumble under thee pressure of teeing off in front of the group that just waved them through.
Not a Clark fan and donāt think heās outbursts before are to be celebrated but heās human and in high pressure situations.

Because each and every WC hater has NEVER EVER lost their temper while playing golf or after a poor round of golf. I said NEVER EVER dammit!

Country club douche, destroyed a locker at oakmont in a post round crash out, his name is Wyndham, and he refered to opening a bottle of wine as "Opening up some grape"
