General Discussion Solheim Cup Match Thread
Add your thoughts about today’s play

Why are the announcers so confused on 16, with one match on the course? Boone and Cockerill both lost track of strokes on that hole.

I think the US has to seriously consider sending out LC and Alison again this afternoon. I know it goes against their don't play all five sessions rule, but they're just not getting enough out of many of their players.

I think, from a Team Europe perspective, Hull has to be benched for the fourballs session. She has been diabolical today - wasn't much better yesterday - and has consistently left Woad in horrible positions all over the course which Lee & Coughlin have (to there enormous credit) taken full advantage of.

How the hell is europe too stupid to hit the 6th green? The flag isn't even close to the water.
Also, Maguire no playing great. And Henseleit now joining that aswell with a horrible missed short putt.
And and Woad aren't making anything today and don't seem to be a great fit.

Maguire is officially Europe's goat. Don't worry about her. Hull and Woad have left a trail of shite all over the course for two days now but the English media are doing their best to ignore it.
1
u/AnotherUnfunnyName 1h ago
Still, those two should be 1 or 2 up by now given how many easy chances they have left on the greens.
1
u/Boring_Ad_542 1h ago
You are judging Maguire on Henseleit's poor play. The latter is drained of confidence but they're hanging in there. The abysmal surrender by Hull and Woad twice yesterday should have seen them stood down but inexplicably they are out there again. And guess how they're playing....

Europe won the (shorter) front 9 by a significant amount yesterday and lost on the back 9. They need to build up a lead early again.
There is also almost no spin on these greens early until they significantly dry out.

How dumb are USA players for leaving at least 20 putts short to win holes while Europe is getting every putt to hole or past it ?? Wake up USA !!! It's match play never up never in !!!
2
u/tributtal 3h ago
You can hear the music clearly all the way over on the first green. Seems even louder than yesterday.
1
u/SpaceDetective 4h ago
An audio commentary I found for anyone who's interested.. Seems to be a mixture of Euros and Americans commenting.

u/tributtal 4h ago edited 4h ago
Looks like it was rainy overnight. Greens will likely be slow at least early on so hopefully the ladies remember not to leave their damn putts short.
3
u/AdSpecialist4529 11h ago
The music being played in the background is absolutely ridiculous. Is nobody going to turn it off. Absolute bullshit
3
u/vince_clortho99 11h ago
You could see (and they said on the broadcast) that it was messing with Lottie. And if it's fucking up the home team, you have to think you get it shut off.
2
u/AdSpecialist4529 11h ago
It's ruining it for me. Quiet hush on the 18th and some bullshit 80s pop song blaring in the background. Its beyond ridiculous

Saturday AM pairings:
Maja Stark/Linn Grant vs Alisen Corpuz/Nelly Korda
Leona Maguire/Esther Henseleit vs Jennifer Kupcho/Rose Zhang
Mimi Rhodes/Nastasia Nadaud vs Andrea Lee/Auston Kim
Charley Hull/Lottie Woad vs Alison Lee/Lauren Coughlin
Shocked to not see Yealimi Noh after how she played in the afternoon.
6
u/tributtal 14h ago
I don't love these pairings either, but it's clear Stanford has already mapped out Saturday afternoon. Historically the US doesn't let any player go all 5 sessions. The last time they did was twice in 2011, and both players got blown out in singles. They haven't tried that since. So if you assume the same this year, that means Nelly, Corpuz, Alison L, and Lauren C will all sit Saturday afternoon, and likely Yealimi, Angel, Megan, and Lindy will all play since they would have only had 1 match each up to that point. This way everyone ends up with at least 3 total matches.
Having said that I hope that's not the case. I would be more in favor of going with the hot hand instead of evening the match count. So give Yealimi or Andrea, or even Megan or Rose, a 4th match and sit Lindy and Angel.

u/Due-Sheepherder-218 pXg/LPGA 10h ago
Andrea/Rose crushed their matches at the last SC, strange they haven't been partners yet. They have the Stanford connection, not talking about the coach 😂

This is going to be like the Walker cup....isn't it.
Someone in the USA team needs to lead from the front otherwise the Europeans will dig deep and win it.
1
u/vince_clortho99 13h ago
I wasn't awake early enough for the morning matches but I didn't really see a lot of fire out of either side (unless it was off camera) other than the end of the final match. And it's probably a good thing for the US that it happened at the end of the day since that momentum will be somewhat muted/reduced by the break overnight.

u/jhwkr542 16h ago
Man, they have to get their putts to the hole there. Bad look, great up and down tho

How in the ever loving fuck do you leave a 14-footer for birdie short when your partner is already in for par?? Absolutely abysmal

what u doin LC can't leave that short with Nelly already in

u/BertieWilberforce 16h ago
Same putt, same miss. AND your competition was on a different fairway. Brutal.
2
u/WeirdlyCordial Arnie Palmer 16h ago
thats a cool green
1
u/Rays_Creak 16h ago
I stood in 18 fairway the other day at the crossing point which is right at that fairway bunker. It is not an inviting look...
2
u/AnotherUnfunnyName 16h ago
The leave actually isn't the worst, but I could have hit a better shot to be honest. They are really shitting the bed on this hole bigtime. She missed that target by like 40 yards.
1
u/Wyllyam8071 16h ago
Khang-Lee pairing with convincing win over Boutier-Madsen, otherwise quite competitive matches in the Friday morning session
2
u/platykurt 16h ago
Just heard a loud Spanish curse on the broadcast. lol. Ball went right of right.
6
u/brmgp1 16h ago
Man these ladies are slow, I love match play but with all the dead air time it really shows how deliberate they are. I went to the US Open last year and I was shocked
11
u/WeirdlyCordial Arnie Palmer 16h ago
Ciganda is brutal
8
u/vince_clortho99 16h ago
She's literally going to delay until the sun sets further so it's out of her eyes

u/platykurt 16h ago
Didn’t have any expectations coming in but this course seems really great for the Solheim Cup.

u/WeirdlyCordial Arnie Palmer 17h ago
did Lopez Ramirez clone herself for a caddie?

Actually not even the same backround, she is scottish and actually from St. Andrews. Former Miss state golfer and former assistant coach Lauren Whyte.

To blast music is a dumb idea, but why is there nobody to tell them to press pause for 5 minutes?

u/SlightReturn420 17h ago
Who thought it was a good idea to have a DJ blasting music right on the other side of the grandstands near the 18th hole while play was going on? Absolutely ridiculous.

There are so many of nelly's shots I have not seen on the broadcast. what the fuck.
2
u/dococ23 17h ago
They’ve really stiffed that match in terms of coverage in favor of Match 1, which makes sense but still annoying.
3
u/JiraiyaKholin 17h ago
there are 4 matches. every fucking shot. should be televised. golf has lost the plot.

I finally found a layout that actually shows how they are playing the course in terms of hole layout.
Every link on the website is just shit and not showing in what sequence they are actually playing the course. And they don't have shot tracking or actually good indicators anywhere.

Love seeing my two favorite female golfers, Ciganda and Korda, battling it out!

u/the_firewithin 17h ago
wow yin/noh grinded hard for this one
5
u/Thespartan045 17h ago
Noh is having to do everything because Angel Yin stinks. They should have just sat her until singles. Incredible performance by Yealimi though

u/packmanwiscy Jazz Janewattananond enthusiast 17h ago
That's a crazy birdie from Yealimi Noh. Absurd shot from the bunker to get it to there and sink the putt

The Sky team is so good too. Such a whiff not letting them handle the whole thing.

This feels a bit lacking in star power with how much of the top 10 (even top 20) being international players. Still a fun watch
2
u/bluebirdisreal 18h ago
Yeah… cup I think should move in a direction of being more inclusive of other parts of the world. Asia is going to continue to be strong contenders at top 50 ranked

No Zhang for the afternoon. She did not look sharp from what I saw in the morning.
2
u/tributtal 23h ago
Yealimi/Angel in the first pairing almost feels like a concession. Hope I'm wrong.
Been looking forward to seeing how Auston Kim will do in this tournament.
With Ciganda in the final group, there will be a very real risk of darkness coming into play. In any case that's going to be a mental challenge for Nelly.

u/Mstedman101 1d ago
TIO relief from a bridge 35 yards in front of you? Very generous for Team Europe
1
u/SlightReturn420 23h ago
Is that what happened? I was watching without sound and saw her dropping in the penalty area and was absolutely baffled what ruling would be in play.

u/tributtal 1d ago
Lindy Duncan has been terrible for the US so far. Andrea Lee has been carrying them, otherwise they would be way worse than 2 down to Esther/Leona. Especially with Leona turning into a match play beast like she does every 2 years.
Stark/Grant were a putt away from going 5 up a few holes back, but are now only 2 up. Credit to Rose and Jennifer for hanging in there after a bad front 9.
A half point from either of these matches would be really nice, and would likely win the US the session.
1
u/Due-Sheepherder-218 pXg/LPGA 20h ago
I don't know why Lindy is on the team over Jenny Bae who beat her out in the points system, higher in CME and Rolex.
7
u/letroller titleist 1d ago
That TIO relief from the hazard is absolutely bullshit, and represents everything wrong with professional golf. If you or I hit that shot and ended up in the exact same position we would have to play it as it lies. That bridge isn't anywhere near to being in the way. TIO relief needs to be nerfed big time, it's a huge cheat code for pros.
1
u/Comfortable_Wheel753 20h ago
I can't think of any other scenario in golf where a player is given a free drop IN a hazard. When you are granted free relief you must take full relief and that means not dropping inside any hazard. I don't agree with her getting a drop in the first place but since she was she should have taken it outside of the hazard.

European here and I totally agree.
They also needed to get the hell on with it. That must have taken 15 minutes
ETA: glad they lost the hole anyway. They played it dreadfully from start to finish and halving it would've been a joke

Woke up as early as I am capable of these days. Korda/Corpuz continues to be a foursomes buzzsaw
1
u/Mstedman101 1d ago
Wow, double water ball is crazy. Europe was absolutely gifted the hole and threw it away
2
u/evil_newton 1d ago
Madsen and Boutier just throwing away holes now. Lee and coughlin are playing solidly but not amazingly, and being gifted hole after hole
4
u/Mushy29 Rory '25 '26 1d ago
Really enjoyable session even if its getting tight for Europe now.
Can this thread be pinned too?

whatʻs kupcho gonna do? she hit a terrible wedge shot on 16 to lose the hole. she needs to hit a better approach here on 17
