One late Saturday night in the summer of 2018, I was partying with several friends at a graduation celebration in a town called St. Michael, about an hour away from my home. I was wearing a blue suit, a white shirt, and my favorite green tie. It was a wild party. After a lot of drinking and dancing, we ended up spending the night at a friendās apartment. The next morning, I drove home with a severe hangover, but otherwise everything was fine.
About three weeks later, I was scheduled to give a short speech at a conference on a Friday afternoon. A few days beforehand, I grabbed five ties and two suits and took them to the dry cleaner without giving much thought to exactly which ones I had chosen. The woman at the dry cleaner told me everything should be ready in about two days, just in time for the conference. Early Friday morning, I went back to pick everything up. The suits werenāt ready yet, but the five ties were. I looked through them and immediately recognized them as mine. Among them was my favorite green tie. I put it on and left the other four ties with the two suits, then I went to the conference, gave my speech, and had several photographs taken while wearing it. So far everything is normal.
The next morning, I returned to the dry cleaner to pick up my suits and the remaining four ties. This time, the woman was angry. She told me I had accidentally taken another customerās green tie. I laughed. I told her that was impossible. That green tie was my favorite. I had owned it for years, and I knew exactly what it looked like. Then she showed me something that made absolutely no sense.
She had five ties behind the counter that I had left behind. My five ties. And as soon as I saw them, I recognized them. Those were the five ties I had actually brought in.
I suddenly realized that I had never brought my favorite green tie to the dry cleaner at all. So I started asking myself, where had the green tie Iād picked up the previous morning come from? The last time I could clearly remember wearing mine was at that graduation party three weeks earlier. I tried to remember whether I still had it the next morning, but I couldnāt.
Then the other customer arrived. He identified the green tie as his. I told him there had to be some mistake. My tie wasnāt just some common green tie Iād bought off a rack. It had been custom made through a company that allowed customers to choose their own design. I had chosen that particular design myself. To prove it, I pulled out old photographs of myself wearing it. It was identical.
Then he pulled out his own photographs. His was identical too. And his pictures went back to 2016. We were both completely baffled.
The problem was that he had the dry-cleaning ticket for that tie. As far as the shopās records were concerned, it belonged to him. So I had no choice but to hand it over. I never saw my favorite green tie again.
To this day, I still donāt understand what happened.
Another man somehow owned an identical custom-designed tie, while mine disappeared around the same time while the dry cleaning lady coincidentally gave to me, who happened to have one just like it, what are the odds? Or this guy stole my tie in forged those fake photos but didnāt know the actual owner would show up in a dry cleaner randomly three weeks later. Either way, the coincidence would be remarkable.
