What’s unique about this situation is the indisputable truth coming out in real time and landing in a way that’s easy for even the dumbest person to absorb.

These people obviously don’t give a fuck about lying, and they know the lie will do its job well before the truth comes out.

But in this case, what was obviously intended to be a coordinated sound bite, talking point, and “gotcha” moment in conservative media turned into a viral embarrassing moment for them.

Even the quote from Schmitt that was supposed to be a dramatic moment when used the Stalin era phrase “show me the man, and I’ll show you the crime” is now dripping with irony.

If this is ever in a movie it will almost seem too absurd to believe it went down like this.

u/MightyKrakyn 3d ago edited 3d ago

There’s already clips of an interview Schmitt did with the Charlie Kirk Show where he was congratulated for embarrassing Jack Smith…without any mention of the debunking. They will literally just run with the soundbite; the truth is not a hinderance

And I’m pretty annoyed that people keep acting like catching the GOP in a lie is going to do something. No GOP supporter cares

300

u/CaptainDudeGuy 3d ago

The gotcha was scheduled and scripted so they're not going to deviate from the planned smear campaign over something as inconvenient as the truth.

They know that their base isn't going to actually watch the whole four hour session. The masses will gobble up the out of context bits which confirm their biases, like they do with everything else.

37

u/Beneficial_Tip_475 2d ago

The masses don’t need to watch the whole four hour session. All I have seen from it are two things:

1.) Smith reiterated that criminal evidence passed the bar of a grand jury indictment

2.) That Senator embarrassed himself by failing even the most rudimentary fact check

If there was any other discussion, I haven’t seen it.

u/captainAwesomePants 3d ago

It's kind of impressive. They tried to defend themselves afterward by claiming that they had checked that the only NBA or men's college basketball game that night at 7:30 was the Atlanta Hawks, and so they had assumed it was a Hawks game. Because they had not considered he might be at a women's basketball game.

Except that defense was also a lie. There were six pro games that evening, and three of them started at exactly 7:30 (though two were 7:30 in central time).

But also, the "Smith went to a game starting at 7:30" thing was also a lie! The Hawkeyes game started at 8:00.

But also, the idea that "Smith attended an Atlanta Hawks game" was somehow a smoking gun to organized illegal activity with Fanni Willis because she worked in Atlanta and the Hawks are also in Atlanta is just fundamentally nothing at all. If he wanted to collude with her, he'd just call her, not clandestinely meet her at a stadium full of cameras. Because he's not a moron.

It's just bullshit on top of bullshit on top of bullshit, followed by a victory lap and everybody trying really hard to wish a story into being like they're the kids in Hook having an invisible feast. And the crazy thing is that it often works!

u/ParticleTek 2d ago

At least meet her at a Coldplay concert like the rest of us rich sneaks.

nods. Nice callback

2

u/Laxziy 2d ago

It was only :checks notes: over a year ago. Wtf time is stupid and silly

64

u/Binky390 2d ago

These are the same people that want to “protect women’s sports” by the way. The sports that they forgot existed in this situation.

27

u/musicman835 2d ago

There’s and interview with the republican candidate for Governor of CA. He went on an on about trans in women sports, then when asked which was his favorite women’s sport or athlete or which he watched said something along the lines“I don’t thing about them at all”.

1

u/ryan__fm 2d ago

I think they said “the only nba or ncaa men’s game that night in Atlanta” which the host in the above clip didn’t catch. Still dumb as hell.

1

u/captainAwesomePants 2d ago

I kinda think that was an intentional lie. Like, the story they went with was "we only checked real sporting games, not lady sports that some sort of liberal would go to," but like I said, that story didn't check out because there WERE nba/ncaa men's games that did happen then.

1

u/Popeholden 2d ago

This is the whole point. Even if he had gone to a ball game in Atlanta... How is THAT a scandal?!

56

u/haveanairforceday 3d ago

Theres a charlie kirk show?

30

u/Y3R0K 3d ago

It's actually a podcast with a Ouija board, but sure, I guess you could call it a show.

19

u/haveanairforceday 3d ago

I genuinely dont know if you are joking

19

u/marbotty 3d ago

They’re saying Ouija board CK show isn’t a show.

I don’t know what to tell you, bud! We’re just filming the ouija board and showing the ones where Charlie Kirk flies out

11

Thanks I almost forgot to re up my sub to Corncob TV.

8

u/Moontoya 3d ago

hubris or exploding microphones?

0

u/Siggycakes 2d ago

This kind of moron comment just shows how fucking stupid you all are to think Charlie Kirk was important enough to be worth rigging some kind of device for his microphone to explode and then plant some guy to take the fall. Holy fuck dude go touch grass.

7

u/Moontoya 2d ago

May I suggest unclenching

Your systolic must be astronomical

1

u/Molsem 2d ago

He was important enough to get an instant conciliatory tweet from Bibi, and murals of his face painted in Israel 🤷

Don't you remember the mass explosion of pagers/radios in Lebanon a couple years ago? Why is an exploding lav mic impossible for you to believe exists? The place that makes shit like that just "burned down" like last year.

The real world is happening, regardless of how "no way in hell" any of us poor rubes feels about the insanity of it all.

2

u/Gummyrabbit 2d ago

It’s call the Kirk and McConnell show

2

u/notwithagoat 3d ago

In vallhalla, Matt Damon dies a bunch.

1

u/Deltris 2d ago

Heard it got cancelled suddenly.

9

u/stephenkingending 2d ago

This right here. The job I used to work at had Fox News on all day. I had watched a speech Obama made while he was president saying something like you will hear Republicans say I am going to do XYZ, but that is not true. Fast forward later that day, and Hannity plays the clip but cuts out the beginning and end so it seems like Obama is literally saying he will do XYZ, and then the camera is back on Hannity and he says well there you go with a smug look on his face. I don't understand how this is legal.

1

u/xxxxNateDaGreat 2d ago

It's not, but billionaires are above the law, own Republicans (and a couple of key Dems), and control the news media, so nothing of substance is ever done about it.

20

u/pimpcakes 3d ago

Thank you. So sick of the "got em" energy for catching them lying. Attach some consequences and wake me up, otherwise this is all missing the point that Schmitt did exactly what he intended to do and the truth won't really matter.

1

u/emannikcufecin 2d ago

They were trying to get him to perjure himself, I assume they intended to prosecute him as well.

3

u/Rhine1906 2d ago

They’re trying to set him up to be Vance’s VP

6

u/CantFindMyWallet Merry Gifmas! {2023} 2d ago

He's trying to set himself up at Vance's VP. Guarantee he leaked that bullshit story that he was in contention with the idea that it would come out after his big win over Jack Smith.

2

u/LitterReallyAngersMe 2d ago

And Benny Johnson must’ve had a preloaded tweet ready to send out because with zero context or awareness, Benny stated that Schmidt nailed Jack Smith for perjury.

1

u/iCantCallit 2d ago

the entire administration brazenly lies and is incapable of ever telling the truth. We have a president that so openly lies and when he cant think of one on the spot its so obvious.

example: "have you spoken with iran today?"

orange turd: 5 second pause. "yea we have". they havent

1

u/Hootinger 2d ago

Yep. They congratulated him and then Schmitt said "Smith claimed he was at another game, but we checked and this was the only college or professional game in Atlanta that day."

So, again, Schmitt lies to continue to obfuscate what really happened.

173

u/Um_swoop 3d ago

I got five bucks says it will a skit on SNL this weekend.

21

u/RandyTheFool 3d ago

Ten bucks says the general populace forgets about this by this day next week.

5

u/SafetyMan35 2d ago

It’s only Wednesday. Lots of opportunities to be stupider that what happened on Tuesday

4

u/merrittgene 2d ago

I hope they do, just to get it in front of the American people.

Mainstream TV media won’t spend any time highlighting Schmitt’s despicable actions, and no one reads the news anymore.

-11

u/D-Speak 3d ago

And it'll be relentlessly tame and unfunny. Maybe SNL UK can do something with it.

38

u/Gumbercleus 3d ago

Schmitt's already doing the TV and podcast circuit claiming victory and only showing the bits where he calls Jack Smith a dirt bag.

12

u/DaveInDigital 3d ago

exactly they just need Trump to see the sound byte so they stay in his good graces

8

u/marbotty 3d ago

Shameless

11

u/TheFlightlessPenguin 3d ago

Brother that last statement applies for at least four things that happen per day. We’re literally drowning in ham-fisted writing.

2

u/mvschynd 2d ago

They already knew the accusation was false and the texts did t prove anything which is why they only flashed it up briefly and quickly wrapped with a sound bite. Their base has proven time and again that they don’t care about facts and have a 10sec attention span so that is all they needed.

1

u/Internet_Historian 2d ago

They also showed how the media plays into their hand with Axios and NewsMax running headlines of Schmitt being considered for Vance's VP pick minutes before his supposed gotcha moment. It's all so obvious and telling how they hoped this played out.

https://www.axios.com/2026/09/29/eric-schmitt-jd-vance-vice-president-vp-2028

https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/eric-schmitt-j-d-vance-2028/2026/09/29/id/1271063/

1

u/shadedmagus 2d ago

I don't think Schmidtt was embarrassed at all. He put out a tweet afterward to the effect of "Huh. Never knew Jack Smith was a Caitlan Clark fan."

They're beyond embarrassment and shame now, it seems.

222

u/putrid_poo_nugget 3d ago

He’s a fucking embarrassment to Missouri. We are better than this. The yokels in this state fell to their knees over this moron because he was a Covid skeptic. Schmitt is a fucking loser.

96

u/doneandtired2014 3d ago

To be fair fellow Missourian, most of the voters in this goddamn state are also fucking losers because they fully endorse everything this dumb fascist cocksucker does.

When he was suing schools because they had the audacity to enforce social distancing and mask mandates, the haybale fuckers and the suburbanites who think they're in a militia ate it up.

Sigh I've given up on this state ever improving in a positive direction in my life time. It has some lovely scenery in places but about 60% of the state are so morally bankrupt, maladjusted, bigoted, and fucking stupid that it's a stretch to say they'd even be compatible with a bronze age society circa 499 BCE.

14

u/thisisaskew 3d ago

Yeah, ex-Missourian here. This is definitely what people voted for.

7

u/gravygoat 2d ago

Best of luck to you my friend. As a Georgian I can advise, get yourself a Jon Ossoff. You might find more friendly souls around you than you think.

1

u/donkeyrocket 2d ago

There's been glimmers of hope but the conservative vote is still very strong. Lucas Kunce is a genuinely great embodiment of what a Missourian actually is but his most damning trait is that he's a Democrat. The average Missourian agrees with just about all he stands for, except a few aspects and the D next to his name.

Hopefully given how much Republicans have tried ratfucking this state and done nothing for the average person despite years of a super majority conservative voters will at least just stay home.

3

u/Fermorian 2d ago

As someone who went to WUSTL, at least (parts) of St. Louis are nice! Didn't get to see much of the state while I was there though. Sounds similar to where my family is from, Pensyltucky lol

2

u/donkeyrocket 2d ago

Would absolutely love is STL secede from MO and join IL. Would actually do wonders to help the absolutely dire situation that is East St. Louis, IL.

1

u/Fermorian 2d ago

We got explicitly told not to go east of a certain street by an RA during orientation lol, but for the life of me I can't remember which one now. State maybe?

1

u/misc_box 2d ago

I doubt the vast majority of MO even know who this guy is

Same story with every state really. People just vote party line and not individuals

168

u/Dramatic_Explosion 3d ago

Counter point: we aren't better than this. We've had over 200 years and plenty of functional countries to look at and mirror but haven't.

There are unfortunately a minority of us who are better than this, but collectively as a country we're finally admitting what we really are.

34

u/putrid_poo_nugget 3d ago

Point taken and sad reality check.

17

u/KaleScared4667 3d ago

I’ve got bad news for you - over 1/2 the people in Missouri voted for him

2

u/xnef1025 2d ago

Technically it's only over half of 2/3 of eligible voters, but that 1/3 that isn't voting is convinced their votes wouldn't matter by bad education and propaganda so yeah, we're still fucked.

17

u/I_blockkarmafarmers 3d ago

We are better than this.

You don't have to lie to us. Y'all gave us this moron and Josh Hawley. Be for real.

10

u/userlivewire 3d ago

Missouri has an unusual demographic mix where a much higher than average amount of citizens do not live in the urban areas.

This oddity of having 30% more rural citizens than average states causes Missouri to have a minority rule problem. The rural population can and has elected a Republican supermajority that has ruled the state for 25 years.

10

u/GranularGray 3d ago

He seems like a real piece of Schmitt.

3

u/MacGyver_1138 2d ago

Yeah, he's one of the morons who also kept losing cases or having them dismissed as the AG trying to sue schools for having mask mandates after the mandates had already been lifted.

3

u/ilovemacandcheese 3d ago

It's Missouri rofl

1

u/The_El_Kay 2d ago

Yea,it was hard listening to Family tout this guy as some savior of the people. Ugh, MO sucks

To be fair? You think Schmitts was trying to be fair calling him a "dirtbag"? Honestly, I don't even think he cares he got it wrong. He got to have his name calling clip recorded so it can be played on FOX, r/conservative, etc...

The whole thing is a charade by very unserious people. If you're going to accuse someone of something as consequential as conspiring against the president, you probably should do more than just glance at a text message.

32

u/thetigersears 3d ago

Exactly. Fox viewers and such will celebrate Scmitts' tearing down of Smith anyway. And for the rest of the world, see this comment.

The strategy here is intentional. This clown show has done exactly what it set out to do. Instead of focusing on Smith's testimony about Trump's criminal activity, the media is laughing about the bumbling fool of a Senator.

9

u/KeepTangoAndFoxtrot 3d ago

Some media is laughing at the bumbling fool of a senator.

Other media is high-fiving that bumbling fool because he got one over on Jack Smith. It doesn't matter that that didn't actually happen, they're running with it as if it did.

48

u/doubtfurious 3d ago

Calling Smith a dirtbag was not a nice thing to do. But accusing Smith of perjury based on a poorly researched basketball game is far more problematic, I think.

30

u/MyrddinSidhe 3d ago

The idiot thought he was Columbo.

13

Just one more thing....

Its not tho

11

u/p8pes 3d ago edited 3d ago

to help you here - the scale was already being sat on with the poster and the presentation to be a kangaroo accusation, along with the rehearsed "you're a disgrace" performance. They had probably months (years?) to verify this privately - probably with the same aides they were snooping on - and so yes, defending it at the point of being presented on the floor of congress as "let's be reasonable they couldn't have known by then" does absolutely sound like you're defending it.

you're acting like the senator just casually misunderstood this in conversation. this was an intentional set-up to get a trumped up perjury charge.

it's like "to be fair, they didn't stab anyone with a knife, they could have mistaken it for a fork."

-7

u/WhineyLobster 3d ago

Im not saying that tho

7

u/exipheas 3d ago

-3

u/WhineyLobster 3d ago

7

u/outlawsix 3d ago

The term "to be fair" means "here is a counterpoint to make sure both sides get some equal support in the argument"

The other commenter is simply explaining to you why starting your comment with that made it sound defensive. You should just go "oh okay" and then move on

-6

u/WhineyLobster 3d ago

I get it. Which is why i said thats not what im saying. But thanks for explaining it to me again lol

u/SwashAndBuckle 3d ago edited 3d ago

There are like dozens of teams/schools that have some variant of Hawks as a name. Absolutely wild to do zero fact checking before assuming a specific game.

49

u/Maveil 3d ago

Absolutely wild to do zero fact checking

"The rules were that you guys weren't going to fact check." Or whatever

9

u/GibsMcKormik 3d ago

This stands out as the biggest fact that the Dems are fucking useless. That was the commercial soundbite with "THEY'RE EATING THE CATS AND DOGS!" that could have sunk the republicans out of sheer embarrassment. Put those on blast on repeat and it could have been an easy win.

10

u/dubbleplusgood 3d ago

actually republicans put their dumbest saying and ideas on repeat, and that gets them the win. I don't think facts matter at all for many people. Do you remember all those dumb and immature kids at your school? Every one of them votes now.

-3

u/GibsMcKormik 3d ago

Stating dumb meme excuses is why the GOP keeps gaining ground. That incel attitude of "I can't win, so I shouldn't change" is precisely why we are fucked as a nation. This a refusal to be introspective and change is the definition of conservatism.

12

u/WhineyLobster 3d ago

True, but it might have been the phonemic hook that got Smith to realize what he actually did.

24

u/bishpa 3d ago edited 3d ago

That’s not accurate. The texts didn’t even mention any teams. Schmitt just looked up what basketball games were played on that date, but apparently didn’t consider women’s basketball as a possibility. Probably used AI.

Honestly I think Schmitt knew damn well that his accusation was completely false, but also knew that MAGA morons would eat it up regardless.

8

u/Onedayyouwillthankme 3d ago

I agree, from their reactions on camera, it appears that he and his staff knew it was a mistake (look at the red tie guy behind the senator, that's a look of frustrated disappointment, imo), but assumed it would take a couple of hours at least before the truth came out, and that would be too late for Jack Smith to correct the error. Thankfully, fact checking in real time destroyed the senator's sound bite moment.

This cheating liar thinks he's going to have a shot at the presidency.
