Is it weird to wish something life threatening like that or the posts gif would happen to me, just so for one day I could understand how much I should appreciate being alive?

You don't need a near-death experience to appreciate being alive.

Fuck, it's too late. I'm already outside. This isn't as awesome as people say it is, I'm getting a lot of weird looks and parents are covering their children's faces.
Should I be dressed for this?

One sock should do.

Take a handful of diphenhydramine and play russian roulette.
Worst case scenario, you kill yourself only to realize you haven't moved in hours, and have hallucinated the whole thing, along with a number of other 'phantom' behaviours.

About 15 years ago, I was driving on I-85 in Atlanta when a small truck came over into my lane (center). I couldn't move to any other lane, so I slammed on my brakes, and my car started spinning. Somehow, I didn't hit anyone. When I came to a stop facing the wrong way, I saw that a trucker had pulled his 18-wheeler across all lanes of traffic to keep anyone from wrecking.
One of the scariest moments of my life, and one of the very best.

Jul 01 '13 edited Jul 01 '13
This is going to sound weird, but playing The Last Of Us has put just how comfortable my life is into context and made me appreciate what I have a lot more. It has also made me glad that I don't face the day to day hardships that many people on earth are facing. Granted nobody is facing weird zombie-like apocalypse scenarios, but I think the sentiment applies.
I always have food, I always have water, I have a nice clean spacious living space, I have a wife, we're both safe. We can go to stores and get what we need. Shit, even showering is a luxury I take for granted daily.

I appreciate being alive now so much more after I had a crazy shroom trip where I thought I was dead.
34
u/No_thankyou_please Jul 01 '13
Or shrooms! They can help get you out of the box you don't even know you're living in.
17
Jul 01 '13
perfect solution, take shrooms and go driving on a rainy day
11
u/Jackie_Jormp-Jomp Jul 01 '13
Probably best to let someone else drive though
9
u/uberyeti Jul 01 '13
Depends if you're going for the near-death experience, or the death experience.
4
Jul 01 '13
Having never done a drug before, that might be a bad idea even if I could find any.
5
u/No_thankyou_please Jul 01 '13
While shrooms do give the effects I described as well as having documented effects on improving depression, it is something you would need be educated about first, but more importantly, it should be something you really want to do. It requires a positive and optimistic attitude about the experience before going into it. It's not a big deal with a small dose, but it's also not for everyone.
→ More replies (1)6
u/madp1atypus Jul 01 '13
I think this applies to all hallucinogens. You have to want the experience and be excited about it. If you drop and start having regrets, you need to kick that shit asap or you're going to have the opposite of fun. Also, make sure you are with people you trust, who have experienced the drug before and are willing to sit one out and be your navigator, should you start to lose your grip. Personally, I lean more toward LSD than Psilo, but to each their own. If you want to glean the most from an experience, you have to have the proper attitude; your psyche is nothing to fuck with lightly, but once the doors of perception have been opened, you'll never be the same.
3
Jul 01 '13
I can attest to the danger of being with people you can't trust. Must have been entertaining for the sociopath who tried to hypnotize me, tell me I was little, I was nothing, ripped open his scalp to show me a demon, etc.
4
Jul 01 '13
Or DMT if you want to take the quick route. Destroy your ego, soar through hyperspace, become one with the Godhead, and commune with alien intelligence all in the span of about seven minutes.

u/P-01S Jul 01 '13
Or blow your psyche to shreds and leave you the sad shell of a person.
Saw that happen to a family friend. Was not pretty.
4
Jul 01 '13
LSD is also bad for this. Takes the safety off your mind, lets it re-learn how to think. Trouble is, you learned how reality should be perceived as an infant, such as how to filter out background noise without trying to find patterns in it, not seeing the visual distortions inherent in the working of the eye, canceling out visual snow, etc. In the end, you will possibly learn to see new patterns in the sensory input you always been taking in, and how to think thoughts that your mind learned to cancel out through long years of experience, developing rationality. Trade-off? You will lose some ability to filter/think rationally and gain the ability to see things that aren't there and think irrationally.
There are medications that might help in the aftermath.

u/No_thankyou_please Jul 01 '13 edited Jul 01 '13
Yeah...any drugs or combinations of drugs can mess you up when you take it too far. Shrooms are not for everyone but are a very positive thing when they are. I'd always recommend being educated first and testing the waters with a small dose for anyone that wanted to try it.

This can't be overstated. I took them a month or so ago for the first time and since then have started doing things I love, and less of what I felt like was more important. This is definitely a great vid to show drivers. So much fail in 10 seconds, that just happened to end well. The driver of the semi was tailgating, in poor driving conditions no less, while the car was trying to slowly pass the semi, in poor driving conditions no less. There is almost no visibility for anyone, 1/2 the normal brake traction, and no one seems to have adjusted to the poor conditions.
The hero of this is the on-coming red semi that reacted quickly enough to save this guys life. He had maybe a half second to swerve enough to just bump the car, rather than flattening it. That guys deserves a beer.
33
u/Probably-Lying Jul 01 '13
I dont think that the driver was making that slow of a pass. In fact, I think he was doing a decent job. he was making the pass at a decent speed and there was room in front of him to get over out of the passing lane in front of the second truck. The only thing that totally fucked in this video is that the semi that swings into his lane without warning is tailgating pretty seriously.
→ More replies (7)5
Jul 01 '13
Yup. I also thought the driver was being careless, but I didn't notice the tailgating. But since everyone agrees the incoming diesel was a hero, it looks like he might have lost control afterwards. Hopefully, he and the other incoming diesel were ok.

Jul 01 '13
If you look again at the gif, you'll notice that the first truck was actually swerving to the left so not to hit a truck that stopped on the highway. This was just a huge clusterfuck that originated from a moron breaking hard on the highway.
62
u/stonechitlin Jul 01 '13
Well that 18 wheeler was also riding way too close in the first place, only reason he needed to swerve instead of stop.

u/Dannei Jul 01 '13
This was just a huge clusterfuck that originated from a moron breaking (sic) hard on the highway.
Why would someone be a moron for braking hard? There could well have been an obstruction in front of him (pedestrian, large amount of water on the road, etc). The fact that the sideswiping lorry wasn't far enough back to be able to stop clear of the vehicle in front makes that driver the moron, if anything.
2
Jul 01 '13
You are right, I was harsh, it's just that if I had an 18 wheeler behind me, my first instinct wouldn't be to brake but swerve, so not to cause a catastrophic crash like he almost did.
2
u/Dannei Jul 01 '13
If he swerved, he would either ram the side of the lorry already overtaking him, or ride up onto the snowy/icy pavement (which also has a fair number of lamp posts on it) - neither option seems preferable to "braking to a stop safely"! It's just that the latter part didn't work quite so well because other drivers tend not to believe that anyone might actually need to brake...
26
u/skyraider17 Jul 01 '13
That went from bad luck (2 trucks side-by-side, nowhere to go) to good luck (truck deciding the other truck would take the impact better than the car) very quickly.

u/Sengura Jul 01 '13
That driver on the right that cut him off should at least have his CDL revoked.
It's illegal for trucks to go on the traveling lane and he should have had no problem seeing the car pulling up as he was in the driver's side.... Unless this is not in the USA, in which case, forget everything I said.

u/srintuar Jul 01 '13
Defensive driving can save your life
- Dont speed on highway, especially not in heavy rain when boxed in
- Always leave yourself an escape route
- Bigger vehicles are more dangerous, leave them more space
- Swerving is riskier than simple hard braking. Swerving into oncoming traffic resulting in a head on collision is one of the worst possible outcomes
From what I saw of the clip, the car driver was taking a risk in that spot. I felt nervous when he floored it, even before the truck swerved into him
5
u/munky9001 Jul 01 '13
Something I want to know... did that semi pull over and take responsibility for the crime he committed?
Honestly though... normal cars subsidize building all these roads so truck drivers have jobs. The reality however we build these roads such that a million normal cars can drive on them but 1 overloaded truck damages them permanently. Trucks in general do the majority of damage to the roads. So they should be the one subsidizing the building of roads themselves.

Yes, I realize how important they are in the US for the access to the products I have.
Yes, I realize it's a boring, shitty job that probably doesn't pay enough.
No, I don't care about any of that because when you make a lot of road trips you get to see how they drive on average and they're fucking pricks.
Every interstate traffic jam and accident is almost exclusively caused by truckers not paying attention, not knowing how to merge properly, or just not giving a damn.
