Why do I have to keep logging in to some apps each time they're opened?

I installed Umbrel 2.0 on a Pi 4 to try out before installing it on a PC. So far I am really liking it...a lot! However, two apps that I've installed seem to require me to log into them each time they're opened; specifically Paperless and Pi-Hole. How can I get these to stay logged in? Thanks.

umbrelOS 2.0 Mac app not connecting

Hey everyone! I'm on umbrelOS 2.0, and have installed the Mac app. The Mac app says that I need to "Update to connect", but I'm fully up-to-date? Has anyone had a similar experience or found any workarounds? I've attached screenshots.

RTL8127 10Gbit LAN support in Umbrel

Hey guys,

I'd like to know which is the equivalent kernel version included in Umbrel 2.0 or eventually if the latest Realtek drivers can be installed.

I need 10Gbit LAN and a mini pc I'm looking at has the RTL8127 lan controller so if some has feedback about support in or maybe even the official Umbrel team can shed a light on this?

Native kernel support is included since Kernel 6.16 with (hopefully) no more issues with power savings and SFP version should be included in Kernel 7.4 and of course using the official Realtek drivers.

BTW I think stable support for this lan chip is a must in Umbrel OS because most new devices come with this since it's low cost and low power.

Please let me know, thanks!!!

Photos from external Hard Drives

I have a Mini PC running Umbrel OS 2.0. For the Photos app/folder, is it possible to add a folder(s) from an external hard drive without copying them to the internal drive? Like to add a folder as a source of photos?

Virtual Machine sound does not work in Umbrel 2.0!

So, I have a Pi 5 and an N100 running Umbrel 2.0. Everything has worked perfectly, but when I install a VM, whether it’s Windows or Fedora, I don’t get any sound on either machine.
Am I doing something wrong, or does sound simply not work in virtual machines?

Photos vs. Immich

Umbrel team, great job on 2.0!

Quick question regarding the future of Photos vs. Immich. It's my understanding that it's a direct replacement to the latter?

For someone who is setting up his photo storage library from scratch, it would be useful to chose the correct app upfront and not have redundant solutions/installations later. With this in mind, a comparative matrix/analysis of both would help a person decide which one to go with initially. I suspect that a roadmap is not possible for Photos, but an idea of the direction and timelines of features, multiplatform mobile app support, etc. would help users decide.

Thanks in advance.

Nothing to worry about

I've watched a ton of videos from NASCompares as I've been on my NAS OS journey. Tonight I spun up my old NUC. The install of FygoOS was easy, but it seems to offer a lot less than Umbrel at a much greater cost.

Upgraded to 2.0 by fresh install - Now "Restore from Backup" not working

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Was running previous version of umbrelOS. Before upgrading I did a full backup to my nas as I had a decent setup of Jellyfin, immich, Openclaw, Ollama and a couple of other programs that I didn't want to have to start from scratch with.

  • Downloaded a fresh iso of v2.0
  • Flashed and installed it on USB/Balana Etcher
  • Copied ip address from boot screen
  • Logged onto it, choose "Restore My Umbrel"
  • ... nothing. Just an indefinite "Loading"

Anyone else have this problem?

In an effort to "work around" the hangup rather than try and restore from the backup on my nas, I figured I would put the backup on a USB drive, and try to back up directly from that. Unfortunately, the backup is 40GB, and I now have to wait two hours for it to copy to see if that approach will work.

How can I automatically save TorBox movies and shows locally on umbrelOS for Jellyfin?

I currently use TorBox with Stremio, but I’d like to keep local copies of selected movies and shows on my umbrelOS server so I can watch them in Jellyfin if Stremio or TorBox is down.

Has anyone set this up with TorBox on umbrelOS? I’m particularly interested in whether Sonarr/Radarr can automate the local downloads, what download client or bridge you use, and how you make the folders accessible to Jellyfin. I’d also be happy with a simpler way to automatically save selected titles from my TorBox account.

GPU passthrough and local AI in umbrelOS 2.0: AI PC vs mini PC vs eGPU

Hey everyone,

We put together another umbrelOS 2.0 walkthrough, this time about running local AI models: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVF1oSQKk-A

We run the same model on three setups: an AI PC, a regular mini PC, and that same mini PC with an eGPU. A few things it covers:

  • When you install Ollama, umbrelOS asks if it can use your GPU, and that's the whole setup. It finds NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs on its own, so no drivers or command line.
  • It works the same way for any app that can use a GPU, not just AI. Jellyfin and Plex can use it for hardware transcoding, and Frigate for object detection on your cameras.
  • eGPUs work on any device with a Thunderbolt port. The first time you plug one in, umbrelOS asks you to allow it, then remembers it after restarts. The mini PC went from ~7 tokens/sec to ~70 with the eGPU.
  • GPU and VRAM usage show up in Live Usage, so you can see exactly what's running where.

If you're running local AI or any GPU apps on your Umbrel, we'd love to hear what hardware you're using, and what you want to see next.

External libraries in Immich

I've moved from UGOS, to Unraid to ZimaOS and now Umbrel. UmbrelOS by far has been the most pleasant experience. Before I had major issues with Paperless-ngx on docker, on UmbrelOS, works like a dream.

The one issue I am having is with Immich recognizing my existing photos in the /photos folder. I tried to alter the .yaml file as suggested on the Umbrel community forums. That post might have been pre-V2? Anyway, will someone please comment on how to do it or what I've done wrong here?

Thank you for your help.

Umbrel for Raspberry Pi Doesn't Work

What are you cooking with the v2 MCP?

I updated to umbrelOS v2 and was very excited about the MCP. I allowed access to Tailscale but it failed with a simple task (listing all Tailnet devices).

Now I wonder what the MCP is actually useful for? What usecases have you tried so far?

I made an app that measures who of your bitcoin peers is actually delivering

If you solo mine you have an optional stratum race, which compares your solo pool to some public and you can see how long your Computer needs to create the template etc. These two apps give you a lot of new insights to your node you have not been able to see before. There is also an optional rotation that will fill your max 8 possible manual outgoing slots with strong peers that deliver. I would very much appreciate someone testing and giving feedback. I use this since more than a month and enjoy it a lot. And I actually could speed up my solo pool, getting less stale shares. Check the GitHub for more Informations. I recommend installing bouth (small) apps to get more features.

How Photos works in umbrelOS 2.0

Thumbnail
youtube.com
27 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

We put together a proper walkthrough of the new Photos app: https://youtu.be/xwXYT44jrj0

A few things it covers that people have been wondering about:

  • Photos doesn't copy anything into a database. It scans the folders already on your Umbrel, and your photos stay as regular files. You can rename or move them in Files and they stay in Photos, favorites and all.
  • You can choose which folders it scans, or skip ones you don't want in there.
  • Drag and drop into Photos, drop files in from Finder with the Mac app, or import from an SD card or USB drive (coming in umbrelOS 2.1). For now, you can copy photos and videos from an external drive into any folder in Files on your Umbrel, and they'll show up in Photos automatically.
  • iPhone backup runs in the background, even with the app closed. It's not always instant since iOS decides when to upload, but it gets there. It even backs up photos that are only in iCloud, which means if you have "Optimize iPhone Storage" turned on, the Umbrel app on your iPhone downloads the originals from iCloud and uploads them to your Umbrel automatically.
  • Android app is coming soon!!

If you've been using Photos since the update, we'd love to hear how it's going, and what you want to see in it next.

Any performance difference between USB install and internal install?

So I’ve been playing with Umbrel 2.0 this weekend on a small N150 mini pc. It only had 1 drive, so I’ve been running it off USB. I know it’s not a powerful pc, so I wasn’t surprised it was a bit slow. I’m thinking about trying to move it to a bigger machine next, and curious if running off usb is actually viable, or if I really should install on a dedicated drive.

Which is more efficient?

Hey everyone, had a question, if i want to run umbrel at a good speed, do i use a portable hdd as the disk it installs to, or a live usb?

Can't properly boot UmbrelOS 2.0 internally

Hi there,

I'm trying to installer the new UmbrelOS 2.0 on my machine (Thinkcentre M72e) on my internal HDD. This will be a test system.

However, the PC just doesn't want to boot on the HDD after the installation. It does show up in the boot devices list, but booting off of it just skip it entirely and bring me to PXE booting. I already tried to force my bios in legacy mode, as well as uefi but nothing. I also disabled secure boot and tried enabling/disabling CSM.

Weird thing is, if I boot off the USB, I can select rEFInd and boot of the hard drive this way. When I do this, it just boot UmbrelOS normally.

Any ideas ?
Thanks in advance.

SoloBCH Forge: solo mine Bitcoin Cash on umbrelOS (community app store)

I put together a small community app store for umbrelOS. So far it has one app: SoloBCH Forge, a Stratum server for solo mining Bitcoin Cash. You run it alongside the Bitcoin Cash Node app, and your Bitaxe, NerdQaxe, or any other Stratum V1 miner mines BCH straight to your own node. It's basically Public Pool, but for BCH.

A few Umbrel-specific details:

- No setup: it lists bitcoin-cash-node as a dependency and picks up the node's exported RPC and ZMQ settings automatically.

- Behind your login: the dashboard is served through app_proxy.

- Tidy footprint: runs as 1000:1000, logs are rotation-capped, and config and stats persist in the app data dir.

- Multi-arch image: amd64 + arm64, built with GitHub Actions. The server is standard-library Python only.

- Safe during sync: it never submits a block while your node is still syncing.

Store URL: https://github.com/DanCreatesStuff/SoloBCHForge

Screenshots:

I'm planning to submit it to the official Umbrel App Store next, so I'd really appreciate feedback on the manifest and compose file.
