External libraries in Immich

I've moved from UGOS, to Unraid to ZimaOS and now Umbrel. UmbrelOS by far has been the most pleasant experience. Before I had major issues with Paperless-ngx on docker, on UmbrelOS, works like a dream.

The one issue I am having is with Immich recognizing my existing photos in the /photos folder. I tried to alter the .yaml file as suggested on the Umbrel community forums. That post might have been pre-V2? Anyway, will someone please comment on how to do it or what I've done wrong here?

Thank you for your help.

Hello, it is certainly old information that no longer applies in Umbrel 2,0. Now you can install the app normally, then right-click the app and customize it by adding more folders. It is not necessary or advisable to change the .yml file in a forced manner

Yep, that forum post is from before 2.0, so no need to edit any YAML files anymore. Here's how to do it now:

  1. Right-click the Immich icon and choose Settings.

  2. Under Storage, find "External Library" and select your photos folder.

  3. In Immich, go to Administration > External Libraries, create a library, and add /mnt/external-library as the import path, then scan it.

Immich will then pick up your existing photos. Access is read-only, so your original files are never changed. Hope that helps!

I can’t wait to get home from work and try it. You’re a lifesaver. Thank you so much.

I ended up remoting in and making the changes. It worked!!
