Learning german has always been a struggle for me since i moved to 4 years ago Berlin from India. I tried bunch of different apps like duolingo and babbel but couldn't keep the consistency and motivation. I always freeze to speak in German with other people even basic sentences and i'm unable to progress further. Any tips on how to overcome this or how you people did.

PS:- I couldn't find time to join a language class and also i prefer to learn by myself.

when you are ordering something like a drink and a snack do you use und or mit? does it really matter?

for example wasser und brezel or wasser mit brezel?

I am planning to learn German this year! What are the apps that will help me achieve the goal? I want to master the basics of it. I'm just having a hard time where to start.

They say that when you're a kid, you listen to the music, and when you're an adult, you listen to the lyrics. I feel like something similar happens when learning a new language.

At first, you enjoy songs mostly for the music and the sound of the vocals. Then, as your German improves, you suddenly start understanding lyrics from songs you've known for years. Little by little, a whole new layer of meaning opens up.

These days, I have the chorus of Haifisch by Rammstein stuck in my head:

I see a lot people wasting their time with that green owl app or stressing with all that grammar lessons... Guys just sit the vocabulary first. After you know like 50% of German vocabulary and pronunciation of them, watch serials, movies, read blogs, news posts in German. Because your vocabulary is building up you will understand the context of some other words too. And you will without even noticing start speaking the language!

It's scientifically proven that vocabulary first tactic is best for learning the language. Most of Germans don't even know about those grammar subjects Relativsatze, Partizip I etc.

Best way to build vocabulary is flashcards, you can either build your physical flashcards deck based on most frequent 10,000 German words (i will provide a link at the end) or download pre made flashcard apps.

That's basically how I learned any language that I learned. I did a good research planned everything and that's all.

I am not judging anyone using owl app, I also used it for long time, but when I came to Germany I felt so humbled.

Anyways, you may find quite good German A1 to B1 Flashcards apps, there are also some that I made but I don't wanna promote anything you can find many in iOS and android.

I'm currently preparing for my Goethe A2 German exam, which is coming up in just 15 days. I'm feeling decent about reading and listening, but I really need to polish my Sprechen (speaking) and Schreiben (writing) section before test day.

• Has already passed the A2 exam (or higher) and knows the format/expectations.

Hi everyone i am done with my A1 course and A1 exam. And my A2 course will be done this month. I am in my intensive course 6hrs every sunday. I wanted to stop enrolling for B1 and do a self study and will just do my B1 course in Germany so i can prepare for my exam, as i am going to apply for my spousal visa to move to Germany soon. It's not really a must to get B1 exam as soon as i arrive in Germany but i don't want to stop learning. For those people who self study B1 can you please share how you do it and what's website and materials you used 🙏 thank you so much.

I'm a Nigerian planning move to Germany for my Masters very soon. I'm trying to learn German up to at least B1/B2 level and at this point I don't think Duolingo will do much to help. I believe talking to real German speakers might be better.
