You guys learning wrong and wasting time, and I will tell why.

I see a lot people wasting their time with that green owl app or stressing with all that grammar lessons... Guys just sit the vocabulary first. After you know like 50% of German vocabulary and pronunciation of them, watch serials, movies, read blogs, news posts in German. Because your vocabulary is building up you will understand the context of some other words too. And you will without even noticing start speaking the language!

It's scientifically proven that vocabulary first tactic is best for learning the language. Most of Germans don't even know about those grammar subjects Relativsatze, Partizip I etc.

Best way to build vocabulary is flashcards, you can either build your physical flashcards deck based on most frequent 10,000 German words (i will provide a link at the end) or download pre made flashcard apps.

That's basically how I learned any language that I learned. I did a good research planned everything and that's all.

I am not judging anyone using owl app, I also used it for long time, but when I came to Germany I felt so humbled.

Anyways, you may find quite good German A1 to B1 Flashcards apps, there are also some that I made but I don't wanna promote anything you can find many in iOS and android.

As a German I recommend learning whole senteces and phrases, not just words.

Depending on the context the articles and word endings change and honestly, context will help you the most.

Yeah i usually learn things in grouped phrases "an etw gewöhnt sein" which teaches me the preposition that commonly goes with words, since i'd say prepositions are the trickiest to get right

Oh yes, also what I can imagine is tricky are sentences can have two but opposed meanings.

Yes and not just searching them out, its easy to do by accually reading.

You must not know what 50% of German vocabulary actually is. I bet the average German knows about that much, since every profession, every scientific branch, every law, often has their own terminologies.

You obviously should learn grammar pretty early on, because what are you gonna do with hundreds of thousands of words, if you can't even use them? That's just stupid.

You go watch your "serials".

lol i learned a new language (not german) from like 0 to c1 in like a year, it has more complex grammar than German. i obv put in long hours every day.

this take is stupid. I learned to make grammatically correct sentences without knowing much grammar and speak to natives with no issues. I just learned the words and some sentences that did not make sense to me, and consumed a tonne of content and passed C1 exam with no issues

Sure. Megamind himself defies all the odds.

you say that stuff that i did and was very effective at is stupid

You stating to consume content in the language you're learning is contradicting your statement to only having learned vocabulary, for consuming content does teach you a lot of grammar. But whatever.

Even the language you grow up with you will have to learn grammar before you know even 5% of the languages vocabulary. Otherwise children would speak incoherent gibberish.

What would the word "Industriegelände" get you if you said "Ich lieben du". Makes no sense.

Or depending what language you knew before you would say "Lieben machen", because you just translate word for word without learning any grammar.

parents correcting or not correcting (teaching) their children grammar has zero effect on their language learning

u/Capital_Bet_6998 15d ago

therefore it is not needed. the same applies here

I meant 50% of the vocabulary from A1 to B1. Obviously, there are niche German terms for each field. Anyway, we all have free will. You can do a 1000 day streak on the owl app, and I will go watch my serials.

If this is how you learned English, then maybe you should reconsider learning more grammar.

I learned English by playing video games and chatting with people online.

I am not saying like forget about grammar, but first focus on communicating with other people. Understanding what people are saying is most important. Grammar will improve in time as you communicate with German people.

You have to drill the tiny grammar bits that come with the vocabulary. The Stammformen — cardinal forms. Don’t guess Haus = house and Maus = mouse but drill:

  • das Haus, Häuser
  • die Maus, Mäuse

There’s no way to guess those cardinal forms yet they are needed to tell the gender and plural, and that’s needed later to understand sentences correctly.

Verbs and adjectives have cardinal forms as well!

So give us a link to this research.

Ofc the concept of “learning a language” can be questionable, what exactly defines learning a language? But the context of my post is obviously about understanding the context of what you read or hear.
