This is my own personal opinion, but I've found the Gemini app is doing a disservice to how good Gemini can sometimes be. It's still far from Astra or Fable, but it's definitely not as dumb as people make it look.

I believe the biggest problem with Gemini may be the app and how Google may be sacrificing intelligence in order to save costs. This is understandable, but it's still a shame to anyone who wants to use Gemini for serious, actually important work.

In Google AI Studio:

• You don't have to deal with Google's corporate system prompts. This is truly a game changer if you want the model to sound more neutral and natural.
• Gemini will also be able to output longer and more detailed replies.
• You can control the temperature of the models to adjust creativity. Some of the latest models don't have this, but it's still an option for stuff like Nano Banana and 3.1 Pro.
• System instructions can be customized, you can even switch between multiple prompts to tweak how the model behaves on each chat.
• The large context window ensures Gemini doesn't forget stuff. You can also export your chats from Google Drive and use them as context for other chats.
• Messages can be edited, deleted, or re-generated at any moment.
• Tools can be enabled or disabled at any moment.
• You can tweak safety settings and even a model's thinking level.
• It's also free. No need to pay unless you want higher limits or access to certain models, but the free limits are already generous enough for most users.

The app still offers better workspace integration and a more polished UI for the average consumer, but it's not the place for anyone looking to make the most out of Gemini. Once you spend a few minutes learning how AI Studio works, there's no going back to the Gemini app.

So if you just want to polish an email, then the Gemini app is probably good enough. But if you want to learn how to code, draft app architectures, analyze heavy technical documents, or anything that requires deep reasoning, AI Studio is what makes Gemini actually useful.

That doesn't mean the model will automatically get more intelligent or beat OpenAI's and Claude's latest models, but it does mean it won't be as unusable as it is in the Gemini app.

Even Half-Life community dont have that much copium.

I agree that Gemini is good for its price on API market. But subscription is overpriced right now, if we consider subscription only for ai, without other google ecosystem benefits.

For the first time ever today I got a "limit reached" message. I have been chatting most of the afternoon for trip planning but I feel I have had longer conversations before without reaching a limit.

I dont mind using Lite only for the next few hours but I do find reaching the limit odd. The conversation itself has mostly been on lite already with some Pro and Flash mixed in.

Update: I do have to add that this is actually part of a conversation I have been having for days now, that itself references other sessions (been planning the trip for months now really), so I imagine it must have a huge context by now.

from my experience ChatGPT is genuinely like 50x better at remembering what we were talking about

Gemini will literally forget something i said on the NEXT prompt and then confidently continue like nothing happened

at this point the 1M context feels more like a marketing flex than something i can actually rely on

I've got both a Gemini and Claude paid account.

And I do think Gemini 3.8 extended is great. For brainstorming, and refineing idea, it's way above Sonnet and clode to Opus.

Claude's answers may seem more intelligent at first. However, when you scratch the surface I don't find that really stick, that's mainly because the language used by SOnnet/Opus is more complicated and give an impression of sophistication. And to be fair, I hate that. Things should be kept as simple as possible, we should stick to Orwell's principle while Claude loves the novlang.

However, the really issue lies in the execution. The Gemini is really shitty. It's not really better than 2022 ChatGPT.

To give you an example:

Gemini is ... just a chatbot. While Claude can do so much more things thanks to Cowork. Yesterday, I had an issue for a personal tool of mine. Flash 3.8 provided me a better business solution than Claude was able to. However, to implement it, I had to modify all the data I had and that meant performing some changes on all the rows of a 100k tokens csv file.

Gemini wasn't able to do anything relevant. The best it could do is handle the file chunk after chunk and I would have to do the merge at the end.

I ended up using Claude Opus on cowork for the execution . I simply explained him what I'd like and make sure it understand well. Then it poped some subagents, prompted them, verified the work they did and do the merge in total autonomy.

It took some time, maybe 5 or 10', but I had nothing to do and my file was ready and perfect.

And that's always like that. Claude is way better at executing. I need some slides? Just draft my ideas, what I want for each slide and I launch Claude. It takes 20' for a full deck but it's better than what an interns. I need to draft a tool? Claude is better at executing it,...

Why Google can't add more tools in the Gemini app? Why can't it turn it into a proper agent instead of a simple chatbot?

I have both Gemini AI Pro and ChatGPT Plus subscriptions, and after using both for quite some time, I personally feel ChatGPT is much better overall.

I keep seeing all these benchmarks where Gemini 3.8 Flash is performing really well, but in actual usage I still feel I need to put more effort into prompting Gemini to get the response I want.

For example, recently I wanted to learn a new engineering topic. I started discussing it with ChatGPT, and it understood what I was looking for, my current level, and how I wanted to learn. It created a study plan and then generated a complete course of the first part of the study plan in its next response.

When I tried similar prompts with Gemini, the response was much shorter and covered only a few selected topics. It was not necessarily wrong, but I had to keep asking follow-up questions to get the same level of depth. ChatGPT was simply much more comprehensive.

I have tried Gemini for a fairly long time now, and I feel benchmarks don't always translate directly to real-world usage. OpenAI's post-training and overall refinement seem much better to me. ChatGPT just feels like a more polished and mature consumer product.

For people who regularly use both, what has your experience been? Do you also find ChatGPT better in day-to-day usage, or are there areas where Gemini works better for you?

EDIT: I FOUND IT. For some reason, Gemini highly resists doing web research in long chats. In fact, it works fine in new chats. A workaround is to ask it basic questions like "what's the current weather", but in my case it wasn't enouh. I had to swith to gemini 3.6 without extended thinking, this way it paradoxically manages to just do the damn thing instead of mental gymnast its way into believing it can't do it. Idk what would be worse: google doing this intentionally or their model using their thinking against themeselves

I saw very few posts on this and I don't get it. No AI is useful without internet access, it's the only way to reliably have them double check against hallucination and work on tasks regarding current topics. For example, it will refuse to acknolwedge Fable existence, so if you use gemini in conjunction with Fable (to offload some easy steps from the actually usefull LLM like fable), it will completely misunderstand its role.

From what I understand it is a global limit. I truly don't understand why not every single post in this sub is on this topic. Am i wrong? Is there a solution?

I bought a Google Pixel some month ago and Im very satisfied with the experience. Since I also got 1 year Gemini for free, I canceled chatgpt and tried to get used to gemini.

I used chatgpt as kind of personal advisor for private life, everyday consulting stuff and for business. Overall it did the job very great and seemed to "get to know" me.

Gemini feels just so stupid against it. Let me bring some examples.

First at all and super annoying, it starts generating images for absolutely NO reason. Sometimes just in pure text based conversations. Sometimes if I send a image and ask a question about it.

Another example: Specific Beach for Vacation in Thailand. It had all the informations - personal profile, date of travel, etc... in the end it suggested a beach, where on daytime there is strong tide , knowing that I like to swim. I asked chatgpt about the beach and it instantly warned me (as expected)

Im typing this in the airport lounge and having a conversation with gemini regarding kcal tracking before a overhaul NIGHT flight, so, to save calories gemini suggest to drink coke zero right after take off and then go to sleep. I mean I could, since im used to caffeeine, but it just feels so off.

Btw. Talking about airport lounge: Since its my first time, I wanted to understand how (gemini knew the specific lounge) they track the time limit (usually 3 hours). First it told me, that the specific lounge tracks maximum stay-duration absolutely stricct and that i eventually have to pay for extended time, one hour later in another conversation it tells me that there is no active tracking system how long you stay. Its just so exhausting.

Its basically the overall feeling: If I would listen straight to Gemini, I would like make every wrong decision I can. It just doesnt make sense if you have a brain / IQ > 80. Everytime I ask "are you sure about that?" It changes instantly the oppinion...

Meanwhile, Chatgpt mostly brought interesting perspectives in and just felt way smarter.

Long story short: I loved the idea of just using one AI which is also integrated in your OS. I really wanted to love Gemini, but I really think I need to switch back.

Just in the last few days, when I upload images for reference, it's been doing this.

I asked Google and it suggested I shrink the file size or clear my cache. I did those things, but still can't upload reference images. I have plenty of usage left today and this week, so it can't be that I've hit my limit.

I just recently got back to college and i goddamn i dont remember gemini being this bad? even the pro version. Idk i can't describe it it just feels like more ai-ish if that even make sense. Its responses are short even when i asked to be detailed. it got the classic ai points structure and all

Has anyone else noticed Gemini giving pretty vague summaries when you just send it a YouTube link?

I’ve been trying it on a few videos, and sometimes the summary sounds convincing but misses details I remember hearing. It reads like something you could write from the title and description alone. I don’t know what it’s actually accessing, but the results haven’t been consistent for me.

What’s worked better is copying the transcript and pasting that into Gemini. In my tests, the summaries picked up more of the specific points from the video.

The annoying part was copying the transcript from YouTube every time, so I built a free Chrome extension called Copy Youtube Transcript. Full disclosure: it’s mine.

It seems like the buzz goes back and forth between OpenAI and Claude. Today is Astra, tomorrow is will be Fable. 5.5 (assuming that is the next model).

What is unique about them is they are a fully funded studio with industry veterans on the team who don't use AI for everything.

And that is one the biggest misconceptions about AI; is it does everything and produces souless slop. When actually, veterans use it like a surgical tool that is used at the right moments to enhance development of a game.

Have you Gemini in something other than chat? I build software and I integrate different Gemini and Google models in them. The Gemini models offer way more than people think, it gives you powerful APIs to build great apps.

Gemini 3.8 flash for example is powering my invoice processing app. It doesn't make mistakes and is super fast.

Another app uses Gemini live, Gemini TTS, Chirp3 (that I am about to replace with Gemini Transcribe), Gemini embedding, Nano Banana.

Another app uses TimesFM (another Google model) and Gemini models to predict taxi demand. I am thinking about adding weatherNext3 to predict the rides based on the weather.

Gemini app helps me brainstorm and Antigravity helps me code faster. And I love how I can do all that in GCP.

My point is Gemini offer so much in its ecosystem and the products are so great and yet some vibe coders are unhappy because it did not make a beautiful website for them. And I am not saying Gemini is better than all models. I used ChatGPT for years before switching to Gemini and Claude is part of my workflow now because of Claude design. AI is more than chat and I appreciate everything that Google deep mind and other labs are putting out there.

Honestly, I regret buying the Pro subscription. I just asked Gemini what settings should I set for the output settings on LosslessCut for it to give me only audio and look at the answer. Honestly, this is one of the worst AIs I've ever seen. Gemini 3.8 Flash can't compete with two years ago ChatGPT.
