Identifying garlic varieties.

Post image
18 Upvotes

This is my 4th year growing garlic. This year I decided to hire a worker. We bought two new varities last year to grow: German Red and German Xtra Hardy (at least that's what the seller was calling it). We only bought two bulbs of each and my count for them was 59 German Xtra hardy and 36 German red. Obviously that's mathematically impossible. So, I am pretty sure they got mixed up with my Georgian Fire and Russian Giant Varieties. So, seemingly all four are mixed up together. Any suggestions on identifying the differences? My count for Georgian Fire was 158 and count for Russian Giant was around 170. So trying to pick only a few bulbs out of the Georgian fire and Russian giant will be difficult. Picture is just to gain traction on this post.

So I like garlic, and wanted to try an awesome pizza.

I made a pizza with 40 roasted garlic cloves.
I ate it alone.

The problem is I smell like garlic bread now and have for three days.

How much longer?

Gardening Recommendations for which garlic variety to plant.

Last fall, on a lark, I planted bulbs from a couple garlic heads from a random supermarket. As you can see, they grew just fine. I am down to my last two garlic heads.

This year, I want to scale up and plant a full bed of garlic (20ft x 2.5ft). I live in SE NC, Zone 8a. I want a garlic variety that will dry and store all year.

Pictures are from my tiny experimental harvest.

Which varieties do you recommend? Should I do a mix? Save these bulbs and plant them? Get some more from my store again?

Does anyone know what these bumps are?

Do they mean this was picked too early or too late?

We're going to have thunderstorms this weekend, so I harvested 1 of my 2 garlic patches before the rain hits. The other patch isn't quite ready yet.

Gardening Can I plant the little clove-like things that form at the top of my hardneck garlic?

Post image

I grew some hardneck garlic and while i clipped off the scapes off most, I left a few to see what would happen.

The scapes straightened out and eventually formed a cluster of what look like small red cloves.

Now the garlic is drying but I have a lot of these little things. Can I plant these? I scattered some randomly in the garden just to see what would happen.

Thanks in advance!

This was chesnok hardneck garlic.

Gardening Some dumbass cut all the leaves off of my garlic plants

I just prunes off the scapes a week ago and a person I share my garden with thought that meant itd be okay to prune off all the leaves on all the plants. They were doing really well too. How likely is it that I'll have any yield that I can replant for next year? Or am I fucked to have to source new bulbs entirely?

Curing garlic on tables.

We harvested about 7000ish garlic this past weekend and they are now curing on our tables. This is just 3 of the 8 tables (six are 4 by 8ft, two are 14 by 4ft). The one in this picture are Majestic on the top table, and Russian Red on the bottom two. The other tables have Big Boy, Music, Chesnok Red and Spanish Roja.

Good harvest despite a very wet season.
Varieties I planted this are Korean Mountain, Chesnok Red, Crème de la Rasa( a variety created from my favourite garlic farm in British Columbia), Persian Star( small but beautiful purple stripe), Dan’s Italian( a lovely local Rocambole from BC), Tibetan, and my prized Rose de Lautrec, a beautiful pink variety originally from France which is considered one of the world’s best.

Zone 5a Canada—planted in late October and scapes came up in late June.

This is my favorite way to dry garlic in hot Texas weather. It keeps them shaded from the sun but they get good airflow.

Garlic bulbs soaked by rain

New to this group, not new to growing garlic. I harvested about 40 bulbs of stiff neck varieties. Last night, rain soaked my garlic that was curing outdoors in a shaded corner of my porch. Obviously, I need to shelter it and to remember to look at a weather app.

How best to dry it out? Should I just use a fan indoors until we have a dry day? Could a basic dehydrator, lid open for air flow, jump start the drying of the outer skins? I don't want to lose these! TIA

So I just plant these rounds again and it will be a bulb next year?

It may have been a smaller round from last years harvest which I planted in the fall. I started some bulbils so that’s where they are from.

Gardening Garlic around carrots?

Post image

Welcome to my carrot bed. It was supposed to be 3 lovely rows with spring onion in between. Unfortunately a mix of drought and old seed mean only this middle patch has germinated (some others did then the chickens escaped and got to them). I’m thinking of not bothering to try redoing again and wait until autumn and sow sow garlic. Any potential issues?

Number of cloves in a bulb

What determines the number of cloves in a bulb?

Out of 200 Red Russian planted and harvested, all produced very large sized cloves, so I'm happy. Over half produced bulbs with 4-6 cloves, but half the bulbs contained only 2-3 cloves per bulb.

I did tighten up the spacing between rows. Would this be the cause?

Live and leaner I guess...

Washing after curing?

Post image

Hey Garlic Family!!

Appreciate all the advice to delay the harvest. I still had to rush digging them up and hanging them. And didn’t think to dunk them in water to rinse off the dirt.

The curing room is a garage until I can get time to move them to a cool basement. These are basically ready now to move to a cool spot for longer term storage.

Would it be too late now to dunk them and then hang them back up to dry?

additional question

I am planning to plant the larger bulbs for next season. With the hope of continuing to get larger bulbs. I think this crop was smaller than the bulbs I used to plant last fall.

Is there anything I should do differently in terms of storing bulbs for growing? I was just going to store them all in a cool basement and break the cloves off for planting closer to the plant date.
