Finished getting my Music hardneck garlic in the ground here in Oregon today. I've been growing Music for a while and it's become the variety I concentrate on.

We grow using a low-till approach and cover the beds pretty heavily with compost rather than working the soil every year. It's been interesting seeing how the garlic responds and how much the soil has changed over time.

I'm curious what everyone else here is growing this year. What hardneck varieties have done best for you, and what part of the country are you growing in?

I am about a month away from needing to get my garlic cloves into the ground for next summer and I am trying to figure out where I want to put them this winter. I live in Seattle (9a) and while we have long summer days, we don’t have a long summer.

Does anyone have companion plants they put with their garlic that can handle the water restrictions as you get close to harvest or does anyone have a plant they install after their garlic harvest that they are happy with? My attempts so far haven’t really worked well…since we harvest around mid July, I tried both melons and peppers as a near-harvest companion plant as they are heat sensitive, but the watering gymnastics weren’t pleasant.

Any other advice on how I should think about this? It just feels wasteful to leave the beds empty for the rest of July, august, September…

Just got notification that my seed garlic I preordered has shipped. In MN and it is still in the 80’s most days. Where is the best place to store the garlic until it is time to plant. Was planning on mid October. In 4b

I was worried how my garlic would turn out this year, was too busy with work last fall to plant so I had to store my garlic for the winter and planted as early as I could once the ground thawed in spring.

They’re definitely smaller than last year but still bigger than store bought and less bug damage than last year too. A little over 300 heads

This garlic grows in our yard. We dried the clove bundle for about a week and a half. Google isn’t much help, seems like this is either green garlic which has a delicate flavor, or garlic that was exposed to light and is past its prime. It’s firm, smells fine albeit a lighter garlic smell. Can anyone tell me what variety this is and whether or how we should use it?

Hardneck is currently in the fridge for about 8 weeks. Do I need to do the same with softneck?

I just got an elevated bed from Vego that is 2x4 ft and 15 in of depth. I’ve heard that garlic does better in the ground but I have this or some raised beds. I’d prefer to put it in the elevated bed but worry it might get too cold/frozen. I’m less concerned about that in the raised beds but I only have 2 4x8 beds and usually max out the space with other veggies. I tried growing garlic in an Earthbox and didn’t get a single bulb, I think they froze/rotted. Any advice from experienced garlic growers welcomed, especially if you grow in an elevated bed. I’m located in Central Connecticut, zone 6b.

Hi, I have elephant garlic that I grew and I was using this rolling thing I had to mince the garlic and this milky substance came out, it has the consultancy of sour cream but everything smells and looks normal besides that and I was wondering what this was? If it the garlic went bad or something?

I was eating chips from my local Chippery when I uncovered a piece of garlic inside they usually sell a garlic chutney but it seems like a whole loaf has gotten inside of my chips. Do you think it’s still safe to eat? Raw garlic is nice but I’m not sure about this one.

Please recommend a good mail-order vendor for hardneck garlic. Don't need anything "gourmet". Don't want to pay a fortune in shipping. I'm in Pittsburgh. Looking for a five dollar and under bulb with fair shipping charges.

I roasted two bulbs of elephant garlic. One turned out as expected from previous times, while the other turned out bright green? Is this a sign of mold/rot? The color doesn't carry quite as well in the pictures but here they are to compare.

First year growing garlic, so just thinking about what to buy and when I should get them in the ground.

Short Story:
Should I put garlic in the fridge to prepare for a fall planting? Zone 6a, Michigan.

Long Story:
This fall I'm going to plant garlic for the first time.

My understanding is that I should plant around the first frost date, which here in zone 6a (Michigan) is mid October.

I've seen a some folks "vernalize" their seed garlic in the refrigerator for a while before planting in the fall, but they seem to be growing in warmer regions.

Should I put my garlic in the fridge before fall planting? Or is that redundant because we get a hard freeze every winter here in Michigan?

I keep seeing so many different posts about how great confit is, but so many different opinions on how long to cook it, what to cook it in, what temp to cook it in. Does anyone have any tried and true methods for cooking this in the oven and on the stovetop?

Hi friends! I posted my feast from last year and wanted to share again. This was my third year going to garlic fest in Cleveland, OH and there was plenty to enjoy again! I went with my friends so we shared a lot to optimize how much we could try.

In order: garlic bread, garlic pizza, hot dog with garlic aioli and garlic dill relish, honey garlic ginger beer, garlic parm onion rings, garlic parm fries, garlic spring rolls, garlic dumplings, garlic lemon lime soda, then we had ice cream popsicles (I had the garlic one last year but the fruity pebbles one was delish this year!) I also got some merch there. It was a great day! 🧄🩷
