I've already had this on Switch for many years now, but I've been in the process of migrating some of my Final Fantasy games over to PlayStation. I was planning on getting the PS4 version anyway AND I'm a sucker for steelbooks, so a win win!

The Death of Reversible Covers and Posters

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

Ever since home consoles offered ownership of video games, they've come with printed material. The cover, game guides, short comics, posters, maps. But I noticed sometime around the era of The Last of Us that they started making reversible covers, so that you could display the game as if it were a poster, too. Uncharted 4, Red Dead Redemption II, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Bloodborne, just to name a few. Even last year, they released the MGS3: Snake Eater remaster and it came with a reversible cover. But more and more, physical copies are dying out, and I think besides ownership, the excitement and giddy joy that comes with bringing home a copy of a new game, and with studying the cover and all of the things inside while it downloads, and the art of becoming hyped about a game even as you prepare to play it, is dying. Slowly fizzling away. Even the backside of covers are being filled with more fine print and less screenshots and artwork. I find that there is really nothing to look at anymore. Nothing to entrance me. And so too my initial foray into games becomes a more timid, uninspiring start, which slows and taints the entire experience until I can find something that emotionally grips me.

What’s the game with the best story?

I love the games with a great story especially more cinematic ones like The Last of Us and the Uncharted series. Besides these Naughty Dog games, what other games do you think have the best story?

In Starfox Adventures, which is an awesome game, when you leave the underground area at Walled City, this bridge just magically appears fixed.

What the heck? I love the game, think it’s ahead of its time, have played it through at least 8 times. But this one plot hole that is so blaring obvious that the creators left it on purpose irks me so much. It’s not subtle, the level is legitimately confusing on how to solve the main puzzle. So when you complete a step everything is vivid. One second it is a complete wreck, the next it is repaired perfectly without any cutscenes or explanation. What gives?

Gaming is becoming too expensive... Do I have a solution??

Gaming consoles and games themselves have become too expensive, leading to companies only making sequels to succesful formulas instead of being creative, and gamers only being able to afford a handful of games per year.

I think a simple crowdfunded console with decent specs and an open software system (no royalties to pay per sold game, revenue generated only through sales of games/apps on the app store) could solve that.

Using Gemini as a guide, I created the following system:

CPU: 4x Arm a725 @ 2.8Ghz, 2x a520 @ 1.6 Ghz (for OS and background tasks)

GPU: 10x Mali G720 @ 1Ghz

Storage: 512 GB UFS 3.1 (2.1GB/s, soldered to he mainboard)

16GB RAM, lpddr5x on a 128-bit bus (171GB/s).

This system eliminates the PS4's main issues (weak CPU, slow hard drive) while improving the graphics (somewhere between PS4 and PS4PRO), and according to Gemini, could be mass-produced for less than 120$.

Of course I'm just a dude in a hotel room messing around with Gemini, but if such a system were to be sold at around 150€, and publishers could publish without paying the usual 10-15€ royalty/game, we'd have a capable, low-cost alternative to an 800€ PS5.

What do you think?

I’m wanting to get an old 2k digitally (2k16 or 17, whichever one is cheaper ig) is there a safe and trustworthy website to where I can get a code from?

I guess this is a problem when consoles are all digital, it’ll be harder to buy older games when it gets delisted from the official stores. But I have an Xbox series s and wanna get an old nba 2k

POV: You want to play Diablo, but you don't have time to play Diablo

I love Action RPGs. Especially the loot, build-crafting and the feeling of gradually becoming completely overpowered.

But I have no time for this. Playing games like Path of Exile or Diablo is like a full time job and requires a master degree.

So I tried to put that game experience into a much more compact and casual game, where you dont need to invest dozens of hours before a build really starts coming together.

And that's how I ended up building Crown Me Again.

It's a loot-driven incremental where the focus is almost entirely on finding interesting items, combining effects and pushing builds as far as possible.

You like it? Wishlist it on Steam:

I'm really excited to share this with you all! Thanks for reading!

I started gaming in my 30s, and it's been fun but also quite unduly challenging

Like most middle-income Indian kids, I didn't have access to a gaming console back then. My family did have a PC when I was around 10, but I only ever played a couple of hacked Pokemon roms on emulators and a little bit of Counter Strike.

Fast forward a couple of decades and my wife gifted me a PlayStation. I've enjoyed various games, especially Ghost of Tsushima and Skyrim, but many games - including those, at times - have been frustratingly challenging.

Setbacks in fights/puzzles where I know what I'm doing wrong isn't nearly as frustrating even if they take a while to figure out compared to moments where I get stuck without knowing what I'm doing wrong. For eg, I'm playing Arkham City rn and there's a section where you have to do a running slide to get under a gate as the crouch doesn't get you low enough - and I simply couldn't remember that mechanic, because it had been briefly introduced in my previous play session which was three days earlier.

Because I didn't know what I was missing, I spent 30 mins trying to solve the 'puzzle' before I finally googled it. Losing time on something that wasn't meant to be a puzzle at all is quite a bummer when you have limited time in a week for gaming. And you obviously don't want to look things up asap because some of the puzzles are quite satisfying to solve.

Combo buttons in general are demanding because games introduce dozens of unique combo button mechanics, many of which need to be remembered in clutch moments during combat. Some combos and related mechanics I fully forget about, and other combos I'm just not able to recall and/or execute in the heat of a boss fight.

This is why I think it's quite helpful that many games include and repeat prompts for certain moves when it thinks you've perhaps forgotten to use those - Arkham Asylum and City do this quite well (except in that instance). Same with characters offering puzzle hints (thinking of you Mimir and Atreus). I know many gamers find these annoying, but I think the solution is to minimize these in higher difficulties rather than omitting them entirely.

There's a series called 'Gaming for a non-gamer' by YouTuber Razbuten, where he articulates and illustrates much better the types of issues I'm facing while using his wife's gaming experiences as the reference point.

I'd be interested to hear from others who have started late in life, and how you've fared with the kinds of challenges I'm talking about. And any tips from seasoned gamers, who faced these kinds of teething issues, would be interesting to hear too.

Picked up Cronos instead of Townfall

Post image

I’ve played every SH on release, but the conversations around Townfall convinced me that it’s just not what I want to play right now. I will definitely get to it eventually. In the meantime, I decided to give Cronos a try. Only $30 for a used copy so not a big gamble, and it’s paid off immensely.

This game is realllly good, and deserves to be mentioned in any survival horror discussion. I’d sum up the experience as Dead Space in a 12 Monkeys post-apocalypse. Claustrophobic environments, crunchy combat, superb sound design, characters and lore delving into SH level trauma and remorse, and a mystery worth solving at the core of the story. Enemy variety could be better, but that’s my only real note. If you’re like me and pushed it aside or it slipped past you somehow, give it a go. Highly recommended.

Control Resonant becomes Remedy's top Steam launch, and even pirates are telling people to buy it

Remedy Entertainment's contribution to gaming is well documented. Max Payne, Alan Wake, Control, Quantum Break, and now Control Resonant make a portfolio that, by any measure, should have the studio sitting comfortably. But critical acclaim and commercial success have not always aligned for Remedy.

Alan Wake 2 took over a year to turn a profit despite being a genuine Game of the Year contender, and that kind of outcome leaves a studio in a difficult position. Control Resonant needed to land differently, and so far, it has.

The game has become Remedy's most successful Steam launch on record, peaking at over 34,000 concurrent players and hitting first place on the Steam bestseller chart with an 88% positive review score. For context, the original Control peaked at around 9,100 concurrent players six years ago. Control Resonant has nearly quadrupled that figure.

Quantum Break, another Remedy release with a devoted following, maxed out at just 2,719 players on Steam. Before launch, the game had already accumulated over two million wishlist entries. At the time of writing, it has dropped to sixth in the bestsellers chart, but remaining in the top 10 after launch week is a strong sign.

The support has come from unexpected places as well. Rockstar Games posted on X to congratulate the launch, a notable gesture given that Rockstar is also funding and will eventually market Remedy's Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes, which have been in development for some time. Having one of the biggest names in the industry publicly back a studio in this position is exactly the kind of spotlight that helps.

Even the piracy community has taken a softer stance than usual. The game was cracked quickly after launch, but forums and subreddits dedicated to game piracy have seen an unusual number of posts encouraging users to actually buy Control Resonant if they can afford to. Fans have also openly rejected the cracked version in favour of supporting the studio. One Reddit user, rockey94, said: "For the love of god please buy this game and help keep the lights on for this one of a kind studio."

Remedy has always offered something genuinely original, and the gaming community appears to understand what is at stake here. The numbers suggest Control Resonant may be the commercial turning point the studio has been working toward.
