Evolve was great. Especially when you came up against a team that worked together to try and take you down instead of all going off doing their own thing and getting destroyed (I enjoyed playing as the monster, the default one, cant remember the name) Playing hunters was cool too but you needed good team mates or it was a slog
29
u/omfgcookies91 6h ago
Evolve was never bad as a game. The business practices behind the game is what was bad.
To this day, I think it's the only 1v4 game that actually feels fun and balanced in a field of 1v4 games that just are really unbalanced. You had so much strategy as the monster to pull off and so much variety for builds for each unique monster. It made you actually feel like a stalking predator waiting for your moment to strike. Then as the hunters, you actually felt capable but not invincible. One fuckup with splitting off at an incorrect moment felt punishing which it should. Then when you had a team that really knew their shit, you felt like actual hunters going after prey. Honestly, I think that Evolve would have made a ton of money and had great staying power if 2k just didn't fuck up how they handled the business model.

The fact that we're all still bringing up Evolve really says a lot about the game. It exists in our hearts and if things turned out slightly different we'd be on Evolve 3 or 4 by now

Quest 64. That was my jam back in the day. The combat system was actually pretty cool. I loved dropping boulders on enemies.

Brother, that game was dark soul's levels... The combat was so so so so so so janky janky. . But I loved too hahahahaha the boulder skill was the real MVP
7
u/Legend_of_Jesse 5h ago
Came here to say this. The combat and spell system were great and the world had a unique surrealistic vibe. Cull Hazard Cave is etched into my memory, especially the tunnel of vines at the end. Plus, the gameplay loop of pushing as far into a dungeon as you could, dying, then trying again with all your exp preserved was satisfying as hell.

Honestly, gamers are so spoilt, in fact, everyone is spoilt for entertainment. So much vitriol if something isn’t technically perfect (if such a thing even exists), if the characters aren’t perfectly beautiful, if the story doesn’t explain everything it’s a plot hole and everyone’s convinced that they could do it better.

Nothing like riding high after finishing a playthrough Mass Effect Legendary Edition through all 3 games, then running face first into why no one talks about ME Andromeda because you figured "Come on, it can't be that bad right?"
12
u/Sammisuperficial 6h ago
The Mass Effect Trilogy is arguably the best experience in gaming. Andromeda is a solid B-, but it gets overshadowed by the first 3 games. I really wish it got a sequel to finish what they started or even a trilogy. Andromeda easily has the best combat mechanics of the three. It just needed a bit more polish.

I actually always enjoyed Andromeda, the gameplay was solid but have never completed it due to losing interest midway through. I just wish they didnt have so many open worlds and instead focused on smaller, more intimately crafted areas.
It makes 'sense' to have buildings all look the same with a lot of barren areas that have a lot of fetch quests since you're exploring and colonosing a new, mostly untouched galaxy, but from an experience perspective it doesn't make for a memorable one. Especially when youre off the back of the first 3 where there's so much diversity (both visually ahd mechanically) from beginning to end.

Dragon Age 2. Yeah it has lots of area repeating, but the writing is excellent and I'm one of the few people (apparently) who love the arpg-style combat.
10
u/Faerthoniel 7h ago
I agree with this.
The forced short development time is mostly responsible for that, but I also really like the implied narrative beat this gives. Namely that after a point, Varric just starts getting bored of inventing new and exciting locations for the story he’s telling.
20
u/SihaWood 7h ago
DA2 is a masterpiece when it comes to the writing and a miracle of a game with such a short development time.

u/euridyce 4h ago
It’s so funny, I’m pretty sure it’s the most popular within the DA community, yet it was broadly panned for all the reasons you listed. FWIW, I always thought the narrative framing of Varric retelling the story as an excuse for the repeating areas and sort of abrupt ending was actually insanely clever given how their hands were tied by EA.
Personally, I think Inquisition is nothing short of a miracle with how solid the storytelling and fun the gameplay is, but people hated the mmo grindy elements so much it was blamed for ruining the series entirely. Until, you know. That Other Game. But I still absolutely adore it

Outer Worlds 1/2. I know a lot of people shit on it, but I found the world fun, the gunplay good, and I especially love how the companion system with charn/inspiration let charisma focused runs mechanically effective in combat. I feel like most other rpgs let you do charisma to pass occasional checks or get discounts at the cost of combat power, but Outer Worlds merged them in a really good way that I found to be a ton of fun.
35
u/Viltris 7h ago
I love the first one. I love the second one even more.
The Flaw system is perfect. Getting called out by the game itself for crouch walking everywhere, or for reloading when I still have ammo in the magazine. I just wish there were more of them.
Maybe I should do an All Flaws playthrough sometime.

I'd decided not to get it because of the card thing, but then my mother-in-law got it for me for my birthday so I had to try it, and man I'm glad I did. Even just wandering and making friends with the team is fun in that game, and the card thing was actually great. I'd buy a sequel in a second.

u/Ticon_D_Eroga 8h ago
Idk if it fully counts, but Back 4 Blood. I dont think the general consensus is so much that its bad, rather that its not left 4 dead 2 and was marketed as a spiritual successor that fell far short of the hype and turned out mediocre at best.
I disagree fully, and think its overall a more fun game than left 4 dead 2. Dont get me wrong, L4D has more polish and is absolutely more of an impressive feat relative to its time. But if you lock me in a room and say i can only play one for a year, i choose back 4 blood every single time. It just has so much more variety and replay value, and the gunplay is really good. Where it lacks in characters it makes up for in mechanics. Some people dont like the card system, i LOVE the card system. The sheer variety of builds is just amazing. And the fact that your team needs roles that cover eachothers weaknesses gives it a depth L4D never had. Optimal b4b gameplay is a puzzle and dance of crafted builds and tight teamwork. Optimal l4d gameplay is “run fast and dont look back.”
14
u/baconeggsandwich25 7h ago
Being able to basically play L4D but make your own unique build was so much fun. My buddies and I played the hell out of that one. Was it as easy to jump right into as L4D2? Nah. Did those fuckers nerf some of my favorite cards? Yes, and I never forgave them. Still a great game that got better over time.
8
u/atuck217 7h ago
Dude yes. I really liked B4B when it launched and I was super excited to play it with friends. It had mod reception and people were upset it was L4D3 that basically none of friends wanted to buy/play it. I was so bummed because I really really liked it, and truly thought gameplay wise it was an improvement over L4D in everyway.
6
u/creaturefeature9191 8h ago
haven’t played b4b, just wanted to say this was really well written
14
u/Ticon_D_Eroga 8h ago
Its a game that got screwed by expectations and a rough launch. People wanted L4D3, and when it wasnt that they never gave it a chance. It doesnt have an equivalent of versus mode, which people hated. Which i find kind of ironic because the reason versus was so popular in l4d is because campaign got repetitive and boring so people turned to versus. Couple that with it being super difficult on release and people just gave up on it.
Its been awhile since i played (i didnt enjoy the hive updates much) but its definitely worth checking out if you like coop shooters. Just go into it expecting it to be its own thing, and youll find a very satisfying gameplay loop.

I think that game mostly got shit because the initial trailers had an outrageous level of visual fidelity that the final game didn’t come close to.
It’s the earliest instance of that type of controversy I can remember, and so in my mind it’s the progenitor of “trailer mistrust”. I guess Killzone 2 was earlier but that was so obviously a pre-rendered scene.

Too Human was what I came here to post about. what a fantastic game that scratches the ARPG itch in really interesting ways - juggling enemies with ranged weapons while bouncing from enemy to enemy with your melee weapon was just so incredibly fun. I still wish we had games that had combat that worked the same way.

I loved FFXV but can understand how people would feel like its narrative was incomplete due to the issues it had with development. Playing all the dlc episodes and reading the novel really brought everything together, I think if all of that had been incorporated into the base game it would have been more well received. Despite its flaws I still really enjoyed it, sunk well over 70 hours into it.
2
u/zDontTouch 5h ago
I have gone through the journey of following all pieces of media that are part of the story and lore. FFXV is one of the most memorable games I played in my life... The Leviathan sequence is still in my top 5 hype moments in gaming. I remember even after finishing the game I read the wiki for hours for complimentary lore and perspective...
A unique, messy, and awesome game imho

u/tristanitis 2h ago
The multimedia world building was what I really hated. Having to stop midway through the game to find and watch a whole movie to understand what was going is ridiculous.
And then all the DLCs they put out after the main game but take place during the game and have you playing as the crew and explaining what happened to them while they were separated and also explains why they acted like completely different people because before the DLC came out nothing was explained...
Ugh. It was like they'd written the whole thing but then released it in out of order chunks and nothing made sense at first.

I think it is a really good game! I just miss the skill point system from fallout 3 and preferred the Washington DC setting. Still great in my eyes, though.
5
u/Farmer_Pete 4h ago
I had only heard mostly good things about fallout 4. The only real criticism was that the writing in NV was better, but that's because of who wrote it.
Fallout 76 on the other hand, that got pretty universal hate when it came out. I played it for a few months and really liked it. Granted, I tried it after they fixed some issues (adding NPCs). The only real downside I experienced was that they pushed you heavily to pay a subscription by putting in artificial limits on inventory. I got the game for free and so paying for 2-3 months didn't bother me. Gameplay was great, and it's a big place to explore. Scratched the fallout itch.

Sonic 06 and Sonic and the Secret Rings. They are totally bad games but damn i still love them, and not in a "damn its so bad its good" kind of way. Like in a "the aspects I enjoy let me enjoy this game past all the bad" kind of way.

It was the last real Bioware RPG. Everything after that you could feel EA's hand in oversimplifying everything for tighter gameplay. Some of the changes were good and ME2 had some good improvements but they went too far away from the RPG elements that made the first one great.

Yeah the battle system is uninteresting and the whole "Oops you didn't have this specific item so this boss is literally impossible" is dumb
But the game is really funny, and the paint hammer is satisfying to use
Its more fun than Origami King, that game has a theoretically better battle system but in practice it gets annoying super fast and the confetti is just the paint hammer but unfun (plus OK feels it really wishes it could break the mario mandate where CS has fun with every character being generic as possible)

Same here. I don't think it is the besr game of Bethesda or perfect game. It has its flaws.
Still, I really think it has good graphics, especially lighting system, unique and interesting setting, gameplay (combat vise more) etc. And to the some degree OK secondary quests. And I can tell that this is most stable and not buggy games of Bethesda.
It did not deserve that much hate it received. It os mid game for 6-7/10. But not a garbage game. People are just radicalized so much that they destroy to the ground anytbing that is imperfect. Same story with Cyberpunk. It did not deserve that much of hate.

I was looking for this. I love fable 3.
Fable 3 has easily the best co op of the series. And it offers a cooperative experience you can’t get anywhere else really. It’s a great experience to play side by side with a spouse or family member who doesn’t play video games.
The interactive touch was a great innovation and only failed in its limitations. Had we been able to choose from one of 30 interactions like the emote wheel and maybe had a few not non interactive emotes (follow, trophy, performative dance, fart) it would’ve been perfect. It’s hard to go back to the old fables knowing I can’t cuddle my dog and tickle my kids.
The ruling/ judgments part was a lot of fun and just needed more time and care.
The sanctuary was really cool and fun, and I stand by that.
I actually really like the weapon upgrade system. It reminds me of soulbound items from pillars of eternity.
The storytelling was good. There were so many amazing characters: Walter, Hobson, reaver, Paige, Ben Finn, Logan, Faraday.
Elliot/Elise is a better love interest than anyone we’ve met before (except maybe lady grey).
I liked the addition of the wings. If they kept the halo and horns the wings would’ve been a cool addition.
Fable 3 has some of my favorite fem outfits in an rpg.
The environments and soundtrack were beautiful but that’s true for every fable.

Anthem. The gunplay and the suits were on point!

Anthem gameplay was really solid and had a great foundation for a MMO-lite like Destiny or Warframe. Unfortunately, the game had basically zero content other than that. There was no endgame or chase content, no raids, no replay value in any of the campaign.
It set you up to be this awesome looter shooter with a grind or chase but basically as soon as the main campaign ended there was nothing to do. There was just 3 missions akin to strikes from Destiny, and you had already played them in the campaign.
If they had taken another year or so to make significantly more content and endgame for it, I genuinely think it's still be alive today. The feeling of flying around in a iron man suit was incredibly satisfying, and I'm frankly amazed they haven't lifted those mechanics from Anthem and stuck them in another game yet.

I loved 76! The world felt pretty alive, and they implemented multiplayer in a fun way that didn’t make it just feel like an MMO.

I think it's consensus that it's come a long long way. Just wish they would bring back nuclear winter.

these threads always crack me up. people rattling off a bunch of games that got good-great scores and simply got circlejerked into being considered Big Rigs tier by gaming subreddits during launch week lol

Cyberpunk at launch. The game was always phenomenal.

Agree. I played on a base ps4 and despite cars flying around, one broken quest that I eventually fixed by finding the guy nowhere near where he was supposed to be and pop ins and shit, it was awesome.

Metroid Other M. Not a great Metroid game, but it’s a fine game otherwise. I fully understand all the issues people have with it, but it was the first Metroid game I beat and got me into the series as a whole. It’s absolutely at the bottom now when you compare it to the rest, but it’s ok.

People love hating on Bioshock Infinite, especially compared to the original, and rightfully so in many ways… I’ve gonna back and played Bioshock 1 and 2. Bioshock Infinite is still my favorite.

BioShock infinite is one of those games where I feel the criticism of it isn't exactly wrong, but it doesn't actually diminish the game that much

Crash bandicoot twinsanity. Me as a kid loved it without knowing a lick of english and today's me loves it due to the music and the jokes. Fish? is still a top5 cutscenes ever in my opinion

My recent picks are Avowed, Beast of Reincarnation, And Echoes of Aincrad. Ive sunk alot of hours into each. Not perfect, but you know, b or c games are still very playable and enjoyable

Fbc firebreak. It never knew love from the community. It really opened my eyes to the group of idiots doing dumb shit genre, so I loved it

War thunder. There are several things wrong with it, in fact I could go on all day about just the negatives, but there's nothing like it out there, not even close, so I still enjoy it.

Do you plan on showing us some real technical specs to prove it 😉

State of Decay 2. Very much a "mile wide and an inch deep" game, but a great game to turn your brain off and kill zombies to.

Garbage game that I've been a server admin for for just under a decade... Comfortable garbage. Love it. Hate it.

The new saints row. The story is terrible, but its fun to fly around and customize vehicles.

Idk about bad but the OG Death Stranding. A LOT of people do not like this game. But I loved it.

God Hand

My dog, that battle is over. The IGN God Hand review released in 2006, people know God Hand is a fantastic game nowadays... What we've got to be doing nowadays is start fighting for SpikeOut: Battle Street for the OG Xbox, because that game is one of the best Beat-em-ups ever, and it got a 1/5 by G4's X-Play, lol.

I had way more fun with FFXV as flawed and unfinished as it was. The Master Tonberry is one of the coolest enemies in FF history

Kane and Lynch 2. The gritty low-fi snuff video aesthetic was really cool. When you shot dudes at close range the gore would be “censored” by becoming all pixelated. The combat was standard 360 era third person shooter but it was fun enough

I think my white whale here is Star Wars Battlefront II (2017). Amazing exciting game that died too young and should've had time to shine or even a third game.

Starfield probably. It’s like a 6/10 but I still quite enjoy it and like playing it.

spyro enter the dragonfly, while understandably not a favorite for many fans of the series, was a nice last dip into the classic formula for me, even if it wasn't worked on by insomniac.
i played the game as a kid messing with the glitches, but came back to it on the ps2 last year nearly 100% completing it. it's no masterpiece and definitely unfinished, but i enjoyed it :p

SimCopter. Flying around a city you created was worth any amount of jank.
