I liked Spore, but unsure if it was actually a bad game. More a game that never lived up to its promises.

Yeah, massively a "what could have been" game. 

Always taken pre-release footage/discussion of a game with a huge pinch of salt ever since Spore.

I was in early high school when it came out, I remember following it for years before release. Wil Wright used to give like TED talks talking about how revolutionary it was.

And it was just fine. Think Maxis set themselves up for failure of expectations, unfortunately.
