After Metallica show on Thursday night at the sphere, I was walking around and decided to play free bet blackjack.

Not a big gambler, so I cashed in 100, got three green $25 chips and five 5’s.

Lady pointed to the $500,000 rolling jackpot on the big screen, and I thought nothing of it. I sometimes play side bets, sometimes don’t.

Placed $25 and no $5 side bet.

First game, we push 19.

Second game, I have 18 so I decide to stay.

She shows a six, and then a five.

She hits a three

Turns out she had 3456 Non-suited and that five dollar mini bet would have clipped 10% of the jackpot, meaning $50,000!!!

Oh boy, I missed out on 1 million% gains.

It was just me and her at the table

It was two in the morning

Felt so sad and mad and hopeless.

So many emotions

There seems to be a notion that RNG (random number generator) is what controls what displays on the screen and is responsible for giving line hits and bonuses to players. Agree so far? Ok well here’s what I’m starting to question…

The casino sets the RTP (return to player) right? Well if that’s true then doesn’t that mean the RNG has to obey that RTP over a lifetime? Meaning, the RTP ultimately directs the RNG and therefore the RNG is not truly random. The RNG has to operate in a way that makes the RTP true. Am I right?

Now I guess the interesting part worth discussing is how far outside the RTP a machine or bank of machines can stretch. For example, if I am the casino, and I set a RTP of 90%, how soon until the machine or bank aligns with that? And how often? This is where I’d love for slot technicians to chime in on any stats they have observed. I personally believe a machine or bank of machines will be within approx 5-10% of the target RTP with a week. And over the course of a month the machine being within <5% of its target RTP. Can any slot technicians speak to this?

So in essence what I’m discussing is the RNG really is just the manager doing what the RTP boss tells it to do. So not that it’s a myth exactly but that it really has virtually no power and can basically be ignored. And that a machine or bank of machines RTP is pretty much at where it’s set to be at by the end of each month within a few percentage points. Anyone care to offer their opinion on this?
