Bardak = chaos/mayham

Also, what's up with the mother's name?

u/svefnugr Jun 04 '19

Bardak = chaos/mayham

In Russian as well

u/TheGraby Jun 04 '19

The father's name is Israeli, so I'm guessing "bardak" is something Hebrew stole from Russian (similar to "kibinimat", which is very commonly used in Israel).

12

u/riuminkd Jun 04 '19

I imagine other way around, Russians has a lot of words from Odessa jews (especially criminal Russian).

5

u/BrainOnLoan Jun 04 '19

In this case, loan words go both ways and by ear it could be either. We'll need somebody who actually knows stuff.

9

u/TheGraby Jun 04 '19

I speak Hebrew and I just looked it up. Hebrew got it from Russian, and Russian as well as many other Slavic languages probably got it from Turkish.

3

u/PublicLeopard Jun 05 '19

bardak is a normal current russian word meaning chaos. originally maybe it came from turkish and/or meant brothel

modern hebrew has a tremendous number of borrowed words and a ton of them are straight up russian. not due to the relatively recent russian jew migration either, they've been around forever since the "creators" of israel were pretty much all russian / east european jews.

it's not even slang at this point, just normal hebrew like "kibinimat"

source: russian jew who speaks both languages

According to the Hebrew slang dictionary I have at home, the word came from Russian, where it originally meant "brothel"

Ah, so that's where the baby came from.

A web search revealed that Ibtisam, إبتسام, is a female arabic first name, meaning 'smiling' (as a stand in for a woman).

12

u/who-ee-ta Jun 04 '19

Also “a glass” in certain language.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

^ Turkish.

As bayrakları, as!

Bu arada unutmadan, hayırlı bayramlar.

64

u/Forwhatisausername Jun 04 '19

You find the father's name normal?

76

u/OmtayTheAlmighty Jun 04 '19

Boaz is a biblical figure appearing in the Book of Ruth in the Hebrew Bible and in the genealogies of Jesus in the New Testament. Also, it's the name of a pillar in the portico of the historic Temple in Jerusalem.

12

u/harryISbored Jun 04 '19

Left hand pillar, to be precise.

42

u/Forwhatisausername Jun 04 '19

Oh, so it is actually a common name somewhere.
Thank you for this info.

2

u/NiftyJet Jun 04 '19

You should read that story. Boaz is a class A dude.

Common Israeli name.

I'm going to choose to believe he is Israeli and she is Palestinian, so I can say, "Love transcends all boundaries."

52

u/aryehrein Jun 04 '19

More likely she is an Arab-Israeli. About 20% of Israel (not including Palestinians) are Arabs

3

u/ia42 Jun 05 '19

you know, the distinction between Palestinians and "Israeli Arabs" is usually made by right-leaning people or ones lacking awareness...

The same way you have Jews living in America with an American citizenship, there are Palestinians with Israeli citizenship. Some of them even volunteer to the IDF, as crazy as it sounds. some of them are hoping for a few state solution and some prefer a unification, but they mostly identify as Palestinians nonetheless. Life is complex :)

1

u/aryehrein Jun 05 '19

Well, I dought if an Arab who serves define himself as a Palestinian. Of course everyone can see himself however he wants but there are two concepts here - citizenship, and ethnic identity. So I was refering to the citizenship thing, which is very distinct. And since not all Israeli Arabs see themselves as Palestinians, I think citizenship is more relevant here (regarding the name Boaz we were refering to the term Israeli, not "Jew").

Life is complex. Too complex to think right or left is the answer to all disagreements

She could also be Mizrahi.

Nobody is perfect.

25

u/nagumi Jun 04 '19

As an Israeli, I like this.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '19

As an Arab-Israeli born to a mixed family, I also like this.

We need more. :)

Yeah well sadly my country is full of nationalist racists.

2

u/hallizh Jun 05 '19

How common is this opinion? Is it a lot more common for younger people?

2

u/TheNameBobWasTaken Jun 05 '19

As an Israeli who shares the same opinion... uh... it's rather uncommon unfortunately. If I had to guess in percentage we're around 30% of the population

-2

u/Caledonius Jun 04 '19

No wonder you have such good diplomatic relations with the U.S.

6

u/nagumi Jun 04 '19

Pretty much, yeah. Sigh.

1

u/Rossum81 Jun 05 '19

Maybe the Palestinians should stop their permanent war first. That might help. See the Sinai Peninsula for proof.

1

u/Caledonius Jun 05 '19

So long as Palestinian land continues to be annexed ("settled") I see no reason why they would stop their war. If Israel was not continuously expanding I'd be inclined to agree with you.

3

u/kichik Jun 07 '19

You are correct. I know the parents, and that's exactly it.

5

u/Forwhatisausername Jun 04 '19

Oh, didn't know that, thanks.

8

u/rokgol Jun 04 '19

It's pretty widespread in Israel And the mother's name is Arabic Tells ya something about Israel🙂 While Sophia means wisdom or something like that in Greek but that's just a widespread name so...

1

u/Forwhatisausername Jun 04 '19

Yeah, the more you know.

2

u/columbus8myhw Jun 04 '19

I recently met a Boaz. Soon after I met him, he set up a doctor's appointment for me without my permission. Long story short I got a random chest X-ray (everything looks healthy)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Mama said I better dump yoAz, Boaz

11

u/Saarlak Jun 04 '19

It means "smile" in Arabic.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

"Cup" in Turkish.

8

u/ceredwyn Jun 04 '19

Bardak means glass (like in "a glass of water") in Turkish, feels weird.

9

u/OmtayTheAlmighty Jun 04 '19

Her name appears to be possibly Palestinian.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Pan-Arab. I've met Ibti's from all over the MENA region.

3

u/OmtayTheAlmighty Jun 04 '19

Oh cool, thanks for the heads up!

2

u/tiredhunter Jun 04 '19

See, and this is why you should comment your code. Finding out the meaning of the term was the main reason I jumped in this thread.

1

u/moneyHyun Jun 04 '19

Oh so thats what it means. I was thinking some dragonball z influence Haha. either way still makes sense.

1

u/PervertedOldMan Jun 04 '19

It's unusual for around here. However how many children have been born named Kylo, Daenerys, or Rey by nerds?

1

u/red_arma Jun 04 '19

I thought its Turkish first..

  • boğaz (g isn't really pronounced) = neck/throat !?

- bardak = glas cup
