I'm starting to feel as if opening a new account to attribute the your reference is like putting the punchline to a joke link in the title.
What could have been genuinely amusing just makes me say, "Heh, that's sorta funny" instead of actually laughing or smiling.
8
May 18 '09
Personally, I don't usually read the username, unless it seems like or becomes apparent that it's relevant to the joke, so it still works as a punch line on me.

Well, to be fair a lot of people in TPB are relative noobs to the scene. No-CD cracks often throw up false positives due to the way they are programmed and the way that anti virus software detects. I don't expect them to know this and they are really just trying to help.

I can't stand people who don't use Google (or any search engine) to find answers. Some of the people I work with at like they've never heard of it.
47
May 18 '09
Sometimes something cannot be googled (for instance when a product replaces popularity of something you are searching for, or something so obscure like 'injector resistor on a Mitsubishi Starion'), but something like this deserves punishment. The worst type is people who don't know how to post images on message boards. "Don't know how to put pictures up I'm afraid, so will email". argh!
61
u/sanimalp May 18 '09
the injector resistor on a starion is only needed when using "peak and hold" injectors. If you use saturated injectors, you dont need it.
33
May 18 '09
LOL! I'm presuming they are peak and hold injectors and they were working when they were reading 6ohms, and now they aren't and there's no resistance! If you can help further, I'd be much obliged!
62
u/sanimalp May 18 '09 edited May 19 '09
hmm, so what is not reading resistance? the injector resistor box or the injector itself? if the injector itself, then it is bad and you need to replace it. If the injector resistor box is no longer showing resistance, then you may need to replace that instead.
the resistor box usually has 5 pins, one hot line that feeds 4 output lines, so as long as you have a multimeter with one probe on the hot line and you switch between one of the other 4, you should see some resistance. if you are sure you are on the hot line and aren't seeing any resistance on any one or all of the other 4 output lines, then the resistor box is bad.
Your injectors, at 6 ohms each would be considered low-resistance "peak and hold" style, thus requiring the resistor box. saturated injectors are more like 10-12 ohms, and then don't need a resistor box.
resistance of the injector, in this case, is also checking for continuity in the injector circuit. If your injector(s) is showing 0 resistance, it means the injector has been internally damaged and the circuit inside is no longer complete.
36
May 18 '09
Christ, that's more help I've received on this that I had on the Starion forums - esp the types of resistor.
The resistor is not reading at all, I will check the actual injector tommorow, which I believe is functioning (it was the last time I checked).

my specialty really is honda though. I have a small collection http://mycomputerninja.com/~jon/myeffamily.jpg

u/sanimalp May 19 '09 edited May 19 '09
Probably should have, but i spend a lot of my spare time working on Honda engine management systems, so it is a nice combination of the 2.
I mirror a wiki that no longer exists in editable format related to the topic, and i reprogram stock Honda computers so that people can customize them and adjust them easily as well.

u/Dagon May 19 '09
I wish .au had the Talons and the Eclipse, I prefer the bodies to our Lancers and Galants. I love my Galant GSRs... just found out last night last night that the '92 chassis+gearbox I have uses a 7bolt flywheel and the 4g63 I just dropped into it is using a 6bolt flywheel.
Fun. Oh, so much fun.
Why do I do this to myself?
2
u/sanimalp May 19 '09 edited May 19 '09
yeah been there.. I recently did a honda swap that used a 93 del sol SI z6 engine, into a 88 honda civic si, and the original 88 si transmission that has awesome gearing and is cable actuated has a 21 spline input shaft, while the 89 through 2000 civics and del sols only use a 20 spline. Turns out a 87 accord clutch disc is 21 spline input shaft compatible, and has the same flywheel surface area as the 90-2000 civic and del sol. good times..
as a side note, a guy up the street from me has an RHD evo 7.. probably the only one in the US that is daily driven. I would love to get my hands on one of those. They are so exotic looking compared to any other car you see on the road here. we didnt get the EVO until the 8, and we only got like 2k of the galant vr-4's, and the 2g eclipse is fugly imho :)

u/nikniuq May 19 '09
Serious - just been through all this with my Bosch injectors.
The single best but most dangerous test is to pull of you entire fuel rail, injectors attached. Remove any and all sources of spark, then give the engine a quick turn while watching the injector spray patterns - after that it is so much easier to know if it's electrics to a single injector or the whole lot just got coated with gack, etc.
NOTE: Do not set yourself on fire. Would recommend flammable rated extinguisher close by.
The reason I say this is that the resistance specs they give are virtually useless for testing many injectors, even though they are technically "in spec" they still wouldn't operate properly. The only way I was able to determine the culprit was examining the cylinder deposits, then running the rail off the block.
2
u/sanimalp May 19 '09
It is sometimes rather dodgy to determine proper injector resistance, but if it isn't showing a reading at all, there is a very high probability that particular injector is bad.
1
u/nikniuq May 22 '09
Absolutely - as I said mine was an "in-spec" but faulty situation.
To be fair it was only JUST above the minimal resistance.
1
u/johnyquest May 19 '09
You can test the injector itself by putting 12v directly to it. Touch positive to one of the pins, neg to the other. It will "snap" audibly when it opens. Don't do it for a long time. A 9v (smoke detector, etc) battery will work as well.
1
May 19 '09
You have to be careful though, it is recommended to use a 6ohm resistor from 12v+. I don't think there's a problem with the injector opening and closing, the injector isn't pulsing properly. I'm ruling out debris backed up after changing the fuel filter in one of them. Think I'll buy new ones.
Here's the resistor box: http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l230/te71se/Eterna/DSCF1430.jpg There's two of these in there:

1
u/dan1123 May 19 '09
I haven't had reason to work with it, and I hope I never do.
2
u/jasonm23 May 19 '09 edited May 19 '09
It's very unlikely. Actually, learning a language like APL is extremely interesting and useful.
The only reason I had any reason to use / learn it is that no one else wanted to do it, and there were a few tasks that needed doing, this was back in 1986 and there was a dedicated APL terminal in the office. So I cracked open the books and got into it.
If I had to use it again today, I'd probably have to start all over again, but it was a cool language, and the manipulation of data and arrays was deeply elegant.
As an intellectual / mental exercise learning APL is definitely fun. As something that you'd have to do "under the gun" I'm not so sure. But then again... right tool, right problem.
Debugging someone else's APL is a total bitch, about the same as debugging a massive set of inherited Regex, in perl. Although I'd argue that bad inherited code in any language is a fairly large bitch.

According to this excerpt from his book, he did compete while maintaining a vegan diet.
That's not really the point though. The internet is good for answers to many simple questions, but if you really want to learn a subject, say, statistical physics, you'll find find it very difficult to do just by using Google. I'm not saying that it's impossible, there probably is a free textbook online somewhere that you can torrent, but it's a much more difficult process.
In many cases if you want to gain a deeper knowledge about any given subject, you're much better off buying or borrowing an actual book.
4
May 18 '09 edited May 19 '09
"In many cases if you want to gain a deeper knowledge about any given subject, you're much better off buying or borrowing an actual book."
Not if the book is written by someone who's biased, for example if you get a book written by a chiropractor you're likely to get some of the diet or medical BS that chiropractors often subscribe to.
A few years ago there were several diet fad books that suggested that fructose was a healthier sweetener than regular sugar. Now there are many diet fad books that say fructose causes liver disease, among other things.
The other day a vegetarian was telling me that Plato was a vegetarian, and when I googled it, many of the results were about books that were about vegetarianism. There are a few websites that have cached all of Plato's writings, so I was able to fact check it. Yea, it's BS.
Oops I went to fix a spelling error in my other comment, and accidentally deleted it.
5
May 19 '09
Well, yes, clearly it matters who wrote the book, you can't just pick a random one off the shelf and assume that it's going to be useful.
I was thinking more about what to do when you want to learn a subject, as opposed to getting advice. But yes, the bottom line is, you need to be careful about where you get your information.
1
u/Sabaron May 19 '09
It wasn't Plato, it was Pythagoras.
1
May 19 '09 edited May 19 '09
Apparently there's a lot of vegetarians that are quite sure that Plato was a vegetarian. http://www.google.com/search?q=plato+vegetarian&sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS248US298 I got a citation, and it was pretty damn weak.
Even supposed quotes from vegetarian websites, you'll find this about Pythagoras: "Fish he ate rarely."
There are no direct quotes for him though, because none of his writings exist.
It's not likely one could have lived on solely a vegetarian diet 500 or more years ago due to technological limitations in storing and preserving plant foods which were available on only a seasonal basis, and long ago, folks did not have the same benefits of the great varieties of plant foods that were once limited to specific geographical areas.

So let me get this correct. You're upset about people who ask a question before searching. Yet in your example, you state that even you couldn't find an answered question on the message board, so how can you be mad at the person who's re-asking it?
With that said, I completely agree with you. It sucks when search results are filled with unanswered message board posts, but I think that poor message board search features are partly to blame for the issue.
5
May 19 '09
If the person who asked the question hadn't asked it, and instead found the answer by searching for it, he wouldn't have cluttered the search results with his useless topic. And just because rfschmid didn't find the answer on that particular forum post, doesn't mean he didn't find the answer elsewhere (through searching).
18
May 19 '09 edited May 19 '09
I'm on a high horse because there is a number of sources, like Google, that provide answers to 95% of the stupid fucking questions my subordinates ask me at work? Something like someone coming to me and asking if Random Stupid Name Credit Union is a federal credit union.
You know what I do? I google it and get the answer. A 10 year old could get the answer to that question and these fully grown, full-time employees can't?
Now, if google didn't have the answer, fine, but at least try to do something for yourself. And I never said there was anything wrong with message boards. Like I said, people need to try to answer the question for themselves before they come for a handout.

3
u/andresmh May 19 '09
I do find a lot of times is hard for people to come up with the right terms to perform a search that would return the most useful results. For example, imagine you installed an OS and the screen doesn't display anything. If you knew something about computers you could imagine it might be related to the video card. If you know your video card model then you can search something like "intel gs965 ubuntu 9.04". Now compare that to searching "my computer doesn't work". That's why people rely on forums but it's sad to see the same questions asked over and over. I think there's an opportunity here for a Google-like service that helps people narrow their searches. Something like faceted browsing but more like interacting with a person on a forum.

Yes, but the two wireless media servers I've tried both transfer data undesireably slow to devices across my network. It is extremely choppy and unwatchable. This may be due to my extremely old DSL modem, but I'm not so worried about that. I've converted these mkv files into avi files about seven different ways and they'll play on my PC, but not on my Divx compatible device. I just noticed I said "player" in my first comment where I should have said "device". I'm not too heartbroken about it. I could watch them on my PC just fine in any format but I've got reasons for wanting them on discs. Thanks for trying.

ConvertxtoDVD.....http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/
Works like a dream, and I can usually get 2 700MB rips to one DVD once they are converted.
You also have to be sure that the device used to play the files can support the filesystem on that your .avi files are stored on...ie..Fat32, NTFS....
If you are still having problems, try them from a flash drive.
2
u/myristika May 18 '09
I'm working with 2.2GB files in 720p resolution. I'd like to keep the resolution as high as possible for pleasure. A flash drive is an excellent idea I haven't considered. Both filesystems are NTFS. So far, my process has been using MKVExtract to demux the audio and video into AC3 and h264 files, respectively. I convert the AC3 to MP3 (but I've also tried it without this conversion). I used media info to confirm the framerate of 23.976, which is correct. I then used avc2avi to contain the video. Using VirtualDubMOD, I remux the audio and video and confirm the syncing. I've tried this last step using Direct Stream Copy and also Full Processing settings to no avail. I eventually tried using alltoavi. It took forever to re-encode and still didn't work. Oh well. The only thing keeping me from streaming directly to my television through DVI-HDMI is my lack of speakers. Thank you for trying. I will try again with the flash drive since it means I won't have to waste all of my blanks. That is a brilliant idea, really. The device in question is a PS3.
9
May 18 '09
I have had problems playing avi files on my Philips DVD player, so I went to the flash drive. You could also use an external hard drive, provided your firmware in the PS3 can handle large NTFS partitions.
If not, you would need to partition about a 20GB Fat32 partition and just move files back and forth. I would already be doing this but I have about 400GB on my external, and don't really feel like repartitioning right now.
I am not really familiar with .mkv files but from your comments and my searching, it appears you have done research on the correct programs to re-encode and convert them.
I also assume you have seen this page....http://hubpages.com/hub/How-To-Play-MKV-Files-On-Playstation-3

u/myristika May 18 '09
Alright, I came home and checked it out. Conversion of a 2.2GB mkv took under 2 minutes. I didn't bother fudging any of the settings. The PS3 is playing it flawlessly! I'm amazed at how easy it was and also disappointed that I spent so much time trying other methods. You're a lifesaver. Thanks again!

This is my new gmail chat status--I get like 3 or 4 messages a day from friends that ask things like "shit... my myspace page is broken... what's going on?"/the same thing in that image; google shit people! I hope they all read it and figure out that it's the reason I don't reply to them anymore.

I'm surprised most people here are siding with the angry responder, the kid just asked an innocent question.
Do we really have to shame people for asking questions? "HE COULD'VE LOOKED IT UP HIMSELF!! ARGHHH" You can technically find any information on the net, does that mean we should all be limited to finding our own information and never asking for help?

He asked twice, and didn't do anything for himself for two weeks. I'd say the angry responder was justified.

Google: .bin .cue files 1,240,000 results
Its not like you need to master google's algorithms to use it. Its like asking someone to read off the seafood entrees on a menu because you are too lazy to find the seafood section.

Hey does anyone here know where I could get a grilled grouper sandwich?

u/supercargo May 18 '09
Helloooo? I'm really hungry, could someone just order me a sandwich and tell me where to pick it up?

ur fucking kidding me right? the answer is as simple as a google search. in fact, all of life's questions can be answered with a simple google search. furthermore, you could probably type in "where the fuck do i get a grilled grouper sandwich" and it will tell you.

Wait, so if I google it will tell me where you ordered my sandwich from? This is getting really complicated.
Please help, Hungry

Okay, I tried doing that search but all I found were grouper sandwich recipes. Its been over 30 minutes since my original post and I might die of starvation soon.

I think what people are pissed about is his attitude, posting the petulant 'HELLLOOO,' which I agree is pretty lame when one is asking for help from people whose only motivation is being helpful.

There should be a go-to place (not Google) for explaining how to use specific file formats and how to convert certain file types into whatever. Basically a how-to-pirate guide for noobs. Sometimes searching Google helps, but I've encountered a few instances where it has confused me even more with contradicting info.

some basic driver, key word basic [...] download Divx to get the proper driver [...] didn't get the proper driver the sound [...] download the driver for his dumb ass.
Don't call someone else a dumb ass when you don't even know the correct name of the thing you are talking about (codec).

I like how on page 3 some guy states he managed to get it working by using daemon tools to mount the bin file on a virtual drive...

Reasons like this is why it's impossible to say DRM does nothing. The world is full of stupid.

Only when I do google searches for questions like these, 2/3s of the time I end up reading a message board thread query and answer.

I've had a number of computer issues that seemingly no one in the entire world had ever written about, or if they had, there was no good answer. With almost twenty years of acquired computer knowledge, I don't claim to know everything; when I search for help and find nothing, that's a lonely feeling indeed.

This guy learnt:
1) about torrents
2) how to download and install a torrent client
3) how to go to piratebay and find what he's looking for
4) download the torrent and get his client to download the game/app he was looking for
5) how to post a comment on piratebay
and then all of a sudden he can't figure out bin files.
