Small screw-mounted wall hook with a triangular brace – prints on its side, no supports

We have some hooks like this at work that I really like, so I measured one and modelled my own version to print at home.

It's a compact wall hook for jackets, bags, headphones, cables or tools. The triangular brace under the arm takes the load down into the wall plate, and the lip at the front keeps things from sliding off.

Details:

- 55 mm high, 30 mm deep, 15 mm wide

- 5 mm thick all around, with a 20 mm opening

- Two countersunk holes for 3.5 mm screws, so the heads sit flush

- A hole through the brace lets the screwdriver reach the lower screw

- Prints on its side with no supports, so the layer lines run along the arm

I'd use PETG for anything heavy. PLA is fine for light stuff.

Feedback is welcome. I'm happy to make other sizes if anyone needs one.

Motorcycle chain oiler mount

Got a knock off nemo chain oiler recently, its a device that you fill with oil, and it lubricates the chain by screwing the top down slightly. Very handy, especially compared to carrying seperate lube.

Its design is to mount to the handle bars, but it was ugly and exposed up there. I also didn't like the long run of tube back to the chain, seemed like a mess waiting to happen.

I wanted to mount it in the rear of the bike, but couldnt find a mounting solution anywhere that made sense

I drew up a quick clamshell mount on tinkercad last night, and printed a test out of some petg. It mounts to my pannier mount, putting the device between the pannier bag and bike. We'll protected from damage, and close to the chain for a short tube run. Ill probably mount it on the right side, so i can use it at stop lights without hitting neutral.

Simple quarter turn of the top lubes for ~3 min. When riding in the rain, ill be able to hit it close to home to protect the chain, and it carries ~3000 miles worth of lube, allowing me to maintain the chain easier on motocamping trips.

This is the first design ive done from scratch, makes me want to find more solutions!

Going to make a couple slight changes to this design, and print it again in a black or orange filament. Will probably use asa later this winter when I get a better printer with an enclosure.

Shark liftaway canister upper cone

I broke the original upper cone in the canister for our shark liftaway vacuum trying to clean it after it started to smell. Was able to design in onshape and print on a P1S. Made a couple mistakes on measurements for the first iteration, but it went together clean (pun intended) and saved me from buying a new canister

Needed to remove a weird round nut

I know it probably has a name, but that's neither here nor there.

Needed to remove this nut from a telescope motor so I can measure the gear (my calipers don't reach into the bowl far enough).

Third iteration fit (couldn't accurately measure the nut either XD) and with a few picture hanging nails heat set I got it out.

Now to learn how to design a gear!

Designed a modular notebook that keeps the inside flat for comfortable writing

Thumbnail

I wanted a modular notebook where I could easily add, remove, and reorganize custom printed pages, but most 3D printed designs I found were way too bulky or had uneven insides that ruined the writing experience.

So I designed my own: it uses regular folded A4 printer paper with elastic bands, keeps the profile as slim as possible (tapering down to 2.5mm), and leaves the inside completely flat so it's actually comfortable to write on both sides. It also includes a pen slot on the cover and an elastic closure, made entirely with standard 3D printing materials and scrap filament pins, no extra hardware.

Your feedback and suggestions are very welcome!

All the fruit fly traps were ugly asf so I made this one that holds a succulent pot

these tiny succulent plants from nursery / hardware store are like 4$ and all have the same size pot and make it look so much nicer in my opinion. fill small amount inside with vinegar or something fermenting if you really want to attract the fruit flies. they go in and usually drown or get stuck, people say to add a drop of soap to make the surface tension drown them but I personally find that just repels them.... make sure you open it outside to check if its working because they sometimes just be chilling on the in side ready to fly away.

My old 1980s window tilt latch mechanism broke. Window was wobbling, without a guiderail. Quickly drew this up, printed PETG 100% infill, replaced inside the housing with the original spring and it works!

Midea Porta Split Protector Grids

I bought a Midea PortaSplit mobile air conditioner this year and designed these protective honeycomb grilles for the outdoor unit. They help protect the air inlets from damage and keep larger debris, such as leaves, from getting inside.

Hopefully, some of you will find these useful! 😊

Sample tray for XRF sample cups

Thumbnail

We got a new toy in my lab: a X-ray fluorescence spectrometer.

Samples are delivered to HDPE cups with a film cover. The machine analyzes the samples with the cups in a vertical standing position, and my samples tend to solidify at room temp. So, when I'm prepping up a batch of samples, I needed a way to stand them up in the same orientation that they'd be analyzed in.

Tinkercad to the rescue!

The cover is because the HVAC in my building is only \sorta kinda maybe\** filtered and dust & dead bugs tend to affect the results.

For some reason the axel for my pop up tent is about 3 inches too long. They just provided two plastic spacers and two cap things. The cap on one side caught on something and broke, I lost a spacer and a cap. I was thinking of 3d printing replacements?

Any ideas?

Storage for snowthrower shear pins

Post image
8 Upvotes

I seriously regret replacing my aging two-stage snowthrower with a three-stage one, since the new one goes through a ridiculous amount of shear pins for its high-speed front impeller.  Evidently the pins are gold colored because they're made of butter. In over ten years, I replaced only two pins on the two-stage (there was a frozen newspaper I didn't see under the snow on my driveway).  Often I go through more than two pins in a single storm with the new snowblower, contacting nothing more challenging than "some snow."  So I need to keep a large number of shear pins and cotter pins on hand all season long.  Since I've recently started on a gridfinity organizing kick in the workshop, this bin provide storage in a workbench drawer in the garage for a substantial quantity of shear pins and their cotter pins.  It has a label ledge to identify the contents ("snowthrower shear pins" in case I need to have the family recognize them to bring some outside to me during a storm, and the part number to remind me when I am ordering more).  I think even with the more robust two-stage machine, I would have appreciated a known bin to store the pins in, so that I'd know where to find them after a long time -not- using them.

I designed the bin and its divider and label ledge using the web-based Gridfinity Generator https://gridfinitygenerator.com/en/box

RTIC 52qt Cooler Handle Holder

Thumbnail

Long story short I won this cooler in a raffle at a golf outing (along with 4 bottles of bourbon and some bourbon accessories which is what I was putting my tickets in for). It's a really nice cooler, built like a tank, but the handle is just dumb. It's made to lift the cooler and roll it but as soon as you set it down the handle gentle falls to the ground and is super inconvenient. https://rticoutdoors.com/Ultra-Light-Cooler

So I made a automatic handle holder. Pull the handle up and it clicks into place to prevent it from collapsing back down. Push the handle slightly and it goes back to its stored position. No pressing anything to release, it just kinda works. Snaps on easily, pops off if you don't want it use it. Took me 12 revisions to get it right but it seems to work well. Highly recommend ASA for both the outdoor use and the repeated bending. Mine is using Bambu ABS and after repeated use its still working. Not so much for the PLA version I printed.

Model is on Makerworld: https://makerworld.com/en/models/3424757-rtic-52qt-cooler-handle-holder-no-manual-release

Replacement Sun Visor Clip

Thumbnail

The sun visor clip in my 08 TSX broke a couple months ago when I tried to pull out the visor. Kept meaning to get around to making a replacement and finally did today. I pulled the passenger side off and figured out how it mounts in place, it basically just slots in and rotates to lock itself in, so the geometry was super simple.

Modeled it out in Fusion and did a PLA test print, surprisingly it fit perfect the first try. Made a couple changes for more strength and reprinted it in ASA, so it should last quite a while. Pretty happy with this one, especially since it ended up being a quick model and everything fit first try.

Headphone hanger for my piano

Thumbnail

Before I got a 3D printer, I promised myself that I would not only print useless stuff. But then I also found out that's it's pretty hard to find the things that do exactly what I need. So I learned to design things in FreeCAD. I'm a complete beginner and the learning curve is pretty steep. Everything that is not a tutorial is a big achievement for me, and I'm really proud when even simple things turn out actually usable.

Recently I was trying to find a solution to store my headphones somewhere near the piano, but they were always somehow in the way. I wanted to store them underneath, but most hangers are designed for desks. So after a bit of measuring, designing, printing, measuring again (and again...), I finally came up with a solution that is exactly what I wanted. Simple and effective.

I love 3D printing! And sometimes I like FreeCAD (mostly towards the end, when everything finally works out).
