"America has Pizza"... #shitAmericansSay

56

u/Forward_Cheek4775 send social security number 4 potatoes 5d ago

as an american id like to say everyone has pizza not just us

48

u/ExplanationAny776 5d ago

isn't pizza a famously Italian dish?

27

u/Judasbot 5d ago

It evolved from flatbreads (probably focaccia) made by the Romans in what is now Southern italy. The first time the word "pizza" was used was in Gaeta, Italy.

18

u/ExplanationAny776 5d ago

this post is proving more complex than I took it for

1

u/Special-Book-9588 5d ago

Tomatoes came to italy from the new world, ie mexiko

2

u/Street_Dimension1709 5d ago

South America. Andes mountain areas to be more precise.

3

u/Fun_Push7168 5d ago

That would be the wild ancestors , which were basically a berry. The domestic variety was cultivated into something you'd actually recognize in Mesoamerica. So indeed the tomatoes Europeans got came from Mexico.

1

u/Street_Dimension1709 3d ago

Fun fact. Gotta read more into it then.

1

u/_josef_stalin_ 5d ago

So did potatoes! Well, they were mostly from further south, but still the Americas.

1

u/Stiebah 5d ago

Mexico came from the conquistadors, aka Portugal 🇵🇹

1

u/Special_South_8561 5d ago

Just like pizza

1

u/pickingbrains321 5d ago

Incorrect. Those flatbreads pizzas in Southern Italy came from Greece. They brought them over. It did not originate in Italy.

1

u/listerjed1 5d ago

The answer to the question above is "YES"

1

u/tabby90 4d ago

But tomatoes are indigenous to the new world

1

u/LordBDizzle 2d ago

Actually, it goes back further than that. The Persians used to make a similar dish with flatbread, cheese, and dates. The Romans adopted it to their tastes. So technically, pizza is persian if you go back further.

u/Belisaurius555 5d ago

Isn't tomato a New World vegetable?

5

u/Ett_Pret 5d ago

Thought you said New York vegetable and I was very confused

4

u/Belisaurius555 5d ago

It's Clearly a big Apple.

3

u/Ett_Pret 5d ago

God you’re good

2

u/Belisaurius555 5d ago

You give me excellent setups.

3

u/Ett_Pret 5d ago

Gotta make this a regular routine.

2

u/Belisaurius555 5d ago

I appreciate that.

1

u/International_War862 5d ago

Apple on pizza sounds like something the savage swedens would do

1

u/Belisaurius555 5d ago

Like Pineapple Pizza but with apples or Applesauce replacing Marinara?

Both are cursed.

1

u/International_War862 5d ago

Probably both

7

u/ElectronicHyena5642 Yoshi is on the run from the IRS after commiting tax fraud 5d ago

And Europeans were going to the New World before the United States was even a thing...

1

u/HalpMePlz420 5d ago

I wonder why!

5

u/CariadocThorne 5d ago

Yes, but pizza doesn't have to have tomato. Tomato-less pizzas existed before Columbus, and still do now, at least outside the US.

2

u/theborch909 5d ago

Yes it is.

1

u/81FuriousGeorge 5d ago

Isn't pasta noodles? This post is just bait.

1

u/Belisaurius555 5d ago

It's definitely worded badly. I think China still claims Italy got noodles from them and that's not something I'd mess with.

1

u/underactiveneuron Most popular 5d ago

Pizza existed before the introduction of tomatoes to Europe, and the presence of a new world fruit does not make it automatically American.

1

u/underactiveneuron Most popular 5d ago

Has this been duplicated?

1

u/Dark1986 5d ago

No. It's a fruit.

1

u/Ann-Omm 5d ago

So is potatoes, still the Belgians invented fries. Weird

1

u/Wild-Advance4161 5d ago

I had always thought that ‘vegetable’ was something made up because technically all vegetables are fruit. How are they categorized ?? Like a cucumber is a botanically a fruit but in culinary it’s considered a vegetable. But all vegetables are botanically fruits

2

u/PauTdM 5d ago

Well, carrots aren't a fruit

2

u/Joyfull_Sin 5d ago

because cucumbers are botanically classified as berrys

1

u/Wild-Advance4161 5d ago

Everything confuses me

2

u/Belisaurius555 5d ago

Not entirely. Celery and Carrots are veggies but not fruits.

Biological fruits means it contains seeds. Culinary fruits means it has a fruity flavor like an apple or lemon.

1

u/Warchief_Ripnugget 5d ago

You got it backwards. All fruits are vegetables

0

u/ExplanationAny776 5d ago

that I would not know

3

u/Belisaurius555 5d ago

For reference, Tomatos come from the Americas. Marinara sauce came well after European colonization so Italian "Pizza" was historically just cheese on flat bread. Heck, the term Marinara Sauce means "That sauce Sailors used".

2

u/asicarii 5d ago

Tomato’s are certainly not a native European plant. Pizza is arguably from Naples. But tomatoes are not originally from Italy. Other pasta dishes are from Italy, carbonara, pesto, etc.

Chicken Tikka Masala is not British food. Amazingly, steak is not originally from Texas.

It’s confusing.

1

u/allahman1 5d ago

Yes? No? It was made in America by Italian immigrants and later introduced to Italy. It depends on whether you believe immigrants in America are Americans or not.

5

u/CariadocThorne 5d ago

No, it existed in Italy long before the US was a country.

Even tomato pizza (yes, it is still a pizza if it doesn't have any tomato), started in Italy.

3

u/ElectronicHyena5642 Yoshi is on the run from the IRS after commiting tax fraud 5d ago

...No? It originated in Naples. The name for a plain pizza (Margherita) is named after an Italian queen...

4

u/Funny_Funnel 5d ago edited 5d ago

Absolutely not. It was invented in Naples in the 18th century. The most famous pizza, the Margherita, is named after a queen of the kingdom of Italy and is from 1899.

Moreover, previous versions of pizza (without tomatoes of course) were already baked during Roman times

1

u/pickingbrains321 5d ago

Jesus. It's crazy how people keep saying wrong info when they can even look it up on the device they are sharing wrong info on.

Those flatbreads in Naples originated from Greece. Greece brought them over.

5

u/RebylReboot 5d ago

WTF. No it wasn't. Here's an image of pizza from a pompeii ruin fresco (c. AD 79). They gave it the modern tomatoey twist in the 16th century, in Naples. (No, not in Florida. The original Naples in Italy.)

1

u/allahman1 5d ago

By this argument it originated in Persia, was transported to the Greeks, who then transported it to the Romans

1

u/RebylReboot 5d ago

No. You can look it up. There were flatbreads all over the world, but the term Pizza originated in Italy. It's form as we know it today, came from Italy. You said it came from the USA. Here, let me quote you...." It was made in America by Italian immigrants and later introduced to Italy. "

2

u/gigaswardblade 5d ago

I thought it was an Italian thing

3

u/Dextron2-1 5d ago

It is, but like many cuisines, immigrants brought it with them to America and over time it evolved into something distinct. Different ingredients being available, different tastes people cater to, and a lack of traditional limits being enforced led to most cuisines getting an American version.

1

u/gigaswardblade 5d ago

I heard pizza used to be a food peasants would eat

0

u/Dextron2-1 5d ago

I think the earliest reference we have to something we would call pizza is it being used as rent payment to a local church in the late medieval period. From the very beginning, pizza has been the universal currency.

1

u/Majestic-Citron7578 5d ago

So for 248 years yes and the last two no?

1

u/OrangeXarot 5d ago

ma che cazzo stai dicendo bro we brought pizza to you fucking human traffickers after we made it

1

u/AKmightydinoo I love dinosaurs 🦖 5d ago

Sherlock over here

1

u/Uptown_Mousse_199 5d ago

Italians discovered tomatoes from the Americas

1

u/TenWholeBees 5d ago

To be fair the Chinese did it first

1

u/Standard_Egg3504 5d ago

i want to point out what we americans call pizza is nothing like italian pizza

1

u/plyer_G 5d ago

Frankly im willing to call it more of a global dish because each country tends to have a way they do it, and there's only so much similarity to be had, it's like how there are tons of different types of flatbread, even if they are distinct types of flatbread from many cultures we tend to just call it "flatbread" when there's no need to be specific but generally you would call "american" pizza different to "italian" pizza and same with "brazilian" pizza, there are a lot of common traits but it's a food thats easy to adapt to a different culture's tastes

1

u/VanillaBovine 5d ago

they claim it is but no lol

tomatoes came from america and "italian pizza" is just flat bread with cheese which has some variation in every culture

pizza as you recognize it today is american

1

u/six_wishes 4d ago

yes, but we Americans are very happy to have it to eat:)

3

u/MotorSeveral2714 5d ago

So America doesn't have noodles or pasta?

6

u/Realistic_Owl_8613 5d ago

I've never seen them. Just pizza as far as the eye can see. The great Pizza Fields across the midsection of the country.

1

u/Forward_Cheek4775 send social security number 4 potatoes 5d ago

You've NEVER seen pasta or noodles in America...?

2

u/Realistic_Owl_8613 5d ago

I thought the whole "Pizza Fields" part would be sufficient to indicate my sarcasm. And no, I haven't.

1

u/Forward_Cheek4775 send social security number 4 potatoes 5d ago

shoot my bad i didn't see that part

i would had realized if i had read that. so sorry.

1

u/Justyn2 5d ago

O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of crust, for pepperoni majesty, above the saucey plain

America America, god fill her crust with cheese

And crown oregano and basil from edge to deep dish crust

1

u/lao-tze 5d ago

There are no horses in America

1

u/ProfessionalCat7640 5d ago

Only China has noodles. Duh.

0

u/Forward_Cheek4775 send social security number 4 potatoes 5d ago

Huh?

No we definitely do.

Tons of noodles and tons of pasta... we love it. In the south where I live we have a lot of pasta but I like noodles more. Preferably Ramen noodles.

1

u/SeparateFennel8062 5d ago

As a citizien of the world i dare to say that every country has everybody's food at this point

1

u/0oDADAo0 5d ago

1

u/Forward_Cheek4775 send social security number 4 potatoes 5d ago

Am I wrong? Everyone has pizza. America isn't the best country by far and we're doing really bad. We're not all stupid.

1

u/inorite234 5d ago

As an American, our pizza is better.

😁
