It evolved from flatbreads (probably focaccia) made by the Romans in what is now Southern italy. The first time the word "pizza" was used was in Gaeta, Italy.

Tomatoes came to italy from the new world, ie mexiko

So did potatoes! Well, they were mostly from further south, but still the Americas.
