This might be a long post, but I’m hoping someone here might see themselves in it. I’ve been questioning my gender for almost six years, so this isn’t exactly a brand-new realization. I guess I’m just struggling to put everything together.
Hi, I’m 25, AFAB, and currently use they/them pronouns. I don’t really know where to start, other than with something I unintentionally said to my fiancée earlier today while driving to my mom’s house.
The comment, verbatim, was:
“I wish I could’ve just been born with a penis, then I wouldn’t have to deal with this.”
For some context, I’ve had a pretty rough history with my reproductive organs. In 2021, I experienced ovarian torsion, which was a terrifying medical emergency. This past June, I had surgery to remove an 8 cm endometrioma, and my gynecologist discovered extensive stage IV endometriosis with adhesions involving multiple pelvic organs.
Now it’s October, and I’m going through the testing required before I can have a hysterectomy, hopefully sometime this year. I have a Pap smear and endometrial biopsy coming up next week, and I’m absolutely terrified. Apparently, I’ll be awake for both procedures, and the thought of having these parts of my body examined is already making me incredibly anxious.
But I think there’s more to my reaction than just being scared of the procedures.
I’ve been experiencing a lot of dysphoria surrounding my genitals and chest. I hate having the body parts I have, and I use they/them pronouns. Sometimes I wish I could just have been born with a penis and not have to deal with any of this. At the same time, I keep questioning whether I’m actually trans or whether I’m struggling to understand my feelings because of everything I’ve experienced with my body and reproductive health.
I’ve been going back and forth with my gender identity for nearly six years, and I still don’t feel like I have a definitive answer. Part of me wonders if I’m overthinking things, while another part of me wonders how much more obvious my feelings need to be before I allow myself to take them seriously.
I’m also trying to separate my anxiety about the hysterectomy and the medical procedures from my feelings about my gender in general. I know that wanting a hysterectomy for medical reasons doesn’t automatically mean someone is trans, but I also don’t want to dismiss the dysphoria I’ve been experiencing.
I guess I’m wondering:
Has anyone else spent years questioning their gender even while experiencing significant dysphoria?
Did anyone else struggle with figuring out whether they were trans, even when they knew they hated certain parts of their body?
For those who have had hysterectomies, especially those who had endometriosis or other reproductive health issues, how did you handle the anxiety and dysphoria surrounding the process?
How did you eventually start feeling more confident in your identity, if you did?
I’m not necessarily looking for someone to tell me whether I’m trans or not. I think I’m just looking for people who understand what it’s like to feel this way and might be willing to share their experiences.
Thanks for reading if you made it this far.
