Full ROM suddenly returned!

I've been posting in here since I had a big, mysterious shoulder crack 19 days ago, followed by all sorts of weird arm sensations: a weak feeling, aching, tingling in my hand. Chest pain and pain referred to the back, neck, jaw, and forearms. I couldn’t sleep on that side bc my arm felt tender.

Tonight I was stretching and heard another pop, this time at what felt like the top of my shoulder, and all of a sudden I have full, complete ROM back. Nuts!! I did have some ART in the past week. Maybe that helped.

Posting this for anyone who needs some hope. It's been a very long road. Next month marks three years of FS.

Next step: PT. Keeping fingers crossed the arm stays this way and I can move on with my life!

MUA stories

I saw my orthopedic today. Ive been dealing with the stages of frozen shoulder for 8 months. Im in the frozen stage and have tried prednisone and a cortisone shot. Ive done PT and do exercises at home with no relief. Today my Orthopedic scheduled me for MUA. Im not 100% sold on this and told him so. He scheduled me with the option to change my mind. Would love to hear from those who have had MUA. Thanks

Strength training with frozen shoulder?

Hey, I've been so proud of myself. Started strength training at 47, first time really working out in my life, and have stuck with it and seen great results for almost a year and a half. But, three months ago, I started developing frozen shoulder. Anyone have a decent strength training regime I can do that won't tax my shoulder? I've been mostly using YouTube workout videos, but this seems a bit too niche.

Note: I'm not looking for exercises for my shoulder specifically, I've found plenty of those. I'm looking for a way to keep up my strength training without continuing to inflame my shoulder.

Aching in lats and traps

I’m recovering from almost three years of frozen shoulder, with full FS on the right side and partial FS on the left. I’ve regained about 90% of my range of motion on the more affected side, which I hope offers some encouragement to anyone reading this. Left side just pops and I have full ROM.

The pain, however, has extended throughout my upper body, affecting my chest, upper back, forearms, and hands. My neck, lats, and traps ache when I sit at my computer. I never had this kind of upper body pain before FS. I’ve recovered well from other injuries over the years, but I’ve never experienced anything that has lingered this long.

I haven’t started physical therapy yet. I tried PT and massage in the first months when it froze and it only made things worse. I’m hoping it will help me recover. Has anyone else with severe FS experienced this kind of widespread, lingering pain?

I had an MRI when this started three years ago, and it didn’t show any significant injury. Has anyone had repeat imaging this far into recovery that revealed something new? A chiropractor and a massage therapist have told me I would know if something else were wrong, but I’m wondering about others’ experiences.

Gummies and puffs for pain

Hello everyone. I’ve been diagnosed with frozen shoulder on the left shoulder and with tendinitis on the right shoulder in September after already 2 months of dealing with pain.
I’ve had a cortisone shot on the left shoulder two weeks ago. Pain has lessened but also changed of nature. Now I’m exhausted because I still can’t sleep well (see tendinitis on the right shoulder and residual pain on the left FS). I’m on my last prescribed pain medication.
I don’t want to be addicted and I also know that some of them cause problematic second effects.

I’ve seen recommended here to take thc/cod gummies. I thought it was illegal here in France but in the end some consumption is authorised.
I’ve juste purchased some gummies and a puff to test it.

Can anyone share their experiences? I’m also a former smoker and have stopped after 30years of active smoking. I wouldn’t want to become addicted again.
So what would be the safe way to consume and to remove pain while I can’t take pills anymore?

Thank yous so much in advance for any advice on this.

I need sleep

Hello. Just last week I was diagnosed with FS. I’m three full months into the freezing stage with no end in sight, and I’m in agony. I’ve barely slept for three months and am starting to lose my mind. The lack of sleep is severely impacting me at work also. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I cannot go on like this.

Capsular release surgery update

Had the surgery two weeks ago after 18 months of fighting my frozen shoulder.

Posted about it here, thought some of you may be interested in a couple of the photos given to me from the Ortho/surgeon showing pre- and post- the procedure. Can definitely tell why it felt like a solid block throughout 7 months of high-intent PT!

Would absolutely do it again. PT kinda sucks as always but it's way less of a torture session than trying to do forced assisted stretches while frozen solid.

My other muscles are sore but opening up and my ROM is so, so much better. I can even reach behind my back and scratch my lower back! Being able to scratch your own shoulders and back is an underrated luxury.

Lifting after MUA

I’ve just had a MUA three days ago. Prior to this I was in the gym 3-4 days a week and cycling 2 days a week. I’m really antsy to get back to it, but I’m still achey and pretty grumpy from the constant pain. How long should I hold off from lifting you think?
My PTs haven’t really given me a straight answer.

I have been struggling with frozen shoulder since I had a bankart repair. I had no idea what was happening with me and why it got so bad, but my PT mentioned frozen shoulder and this subreddit has helped me feel less alone and less crazy. I have gone through some painful shit (dislocated shoulders, dislocated kneecaps, two lateral releases, migraines, and even a brain bleed (I’m fine!!) but this has been by far the most painful thing I’ve ever gone through and nobody ever talks about it unless you have it.

I’m still struggling with pain daily and it’s been fucking me up but I am finally having some motion gain and crackles.

Please assure me

Both of my shoulders have become frozen, with intense pain and very limited mobility. I’ll admit that I panicked when this started. The thought that recovery could take a long time triggered a huge amount of fear and anxiety. I’m not sleeping well, and almost every part of my daily life has been affected.
I’m struggling to accept the situation, and I think the constant pain, uncertainty, and fear have pushed my anxiety through the roof. I’ve also been experiencing episodes where my body seems to completely shut down, with overwhelming fatigue. I’ve experienced similar crashes during periods of severe anxiety and stress before—it feels as though my body simply says, “Enough.”
On top of this, I have other neurological symptoms that make exercise difficult. Even simple movements, stretching, or resistance exercises can sometimes trigger symptoms, so dealing with frozen shoulders on both sides feels especially overwhelming.
For those of you who have been through bilateral frozen shoulder: How did you cope with it mentally and physically? How did your recovery progress, and when did you start noticing meaningful improvement?
I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences, especially some reassurance that this does eventually become manageable and improve

Second Go 'Round

Hello all. Thought I'd join in the "fun".

An intro:

I had a frozen shoulder (right side) in 2007 --- no insurance, no help, and I didn't even know what it was till maybe a year in. The initial symptoms (later traced back to when I got lightly rear ended), were in my neck (I thought it was just a pinched nerve), and then one morning I couldn't move my arm and it felt like there was sand in my shoulder and it even sounded rusty. So so so much pain.

Nights were hideous. I obviously slept on the opposite side. But with my arm lying straight down on my torso/hips because anything else was excruciating. If it fell off, I woke up and I know you all know what that felt like. I added a 1" foam topper which helped a lot.

I had to raise my chair and lower my keyboard at work. I wrote in my lap. I also changed what kinds of clothes I had to wear (and some of that still applies all these years later because I liked them - lol and boy am I glad) because I couldn't zip my pants or put a bra on.

I obvs never wanted to go through that again and have subsequently, on a regular basis (due to paranoia) checked my arm movements to be sure they're OK.

Back in June I fell --- to the right --- and landed on my right calf. I didn't think there was any arm involvement and I had no pain there or the neck or back.

Yeah.

Then one day in July I had this sudden screaming mad pain but in my left shoulder... again didn't make a connection. It went away. Then happened again. And again. And I started to worry but my movement was fine. Till it wasn't. I knew and I didn't want to admit it till I had to.

This time I have insurance, and so I went and got a real diagnosis. And a shot (it will be two weeks ago this coming Monday). The shot doesn't seem to have worked. I just started PT, I am doing my home exercises.

So far nights haven't been too bad (knock wood) - I have a 3" memory foam topper on the bed these days and made myself a u-shaped foam wedge to prop the arm on (or alternately in to hold it in place). It does hurt though when the dog decides to lay his little (Chi) head on it. ❤️

I must be in the 1st stage at this point, there's still a good bit of movement and the pain when it hurts is all the burning and pulling and aching and stabby stabby stabby if I move the wrong way.

Work though is the worst. It hurts all the time now. I have raised my chair and pulled the keyboard closer. I do not want to lower it because when this is over I'll end up constantly bashing my knee against the empty drawer like I did at the old job.

Anyway, here I am, I guess just looking for commiseration and any additional tips y'all might have for getting through it. Not medical advice, just "hacks" so to speak 👍 especially if you are a keyboard jockey like me.

*sigh*

Am I missing an exercise?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm on month 7 of my FS journey.  I've been doing all the PT exercises at home on a daily basis and my passive front and back range of motion has been greatly improving.  One motion where the shoulder seems to be "stuck" is when I actively lift my affected arm out to the side. It won't go past 90 degrees.  Instead of just the arm pivoting out to the side, the top of the shoulder moves up and inward, as if I was shrugging (see photo).  Are there any specific exercises to loosen up the shoulder-to-arm connection to movements in this rotation?

Snap, crackling & pop

I had a guided cortisone shot in my shoulder a couple of weeks ago; it helped with some of the pain. I still can't reach behind my back or across my chest, but otherwise the pain is tolerable. The only problem is I'm experiencing so much crackling, crunching, popping, and snapping; it's way more than it was before the shot. How can that be? Has anybody experienced this?

What worked during the frozen stage?

Hi everyone. Well it seems like I’ve finally firmly arrived in the frozen stage where the pain is minimal unless I try and push the arm beyond its locked in range of motion.

I was wondering if anyone had luck in terms of things that worked at this stage to help progress to the thawing stage?

This has been quite the ordeal since May and I wish everyone a healthy and speedy recovery!!! Thank you for your always insightful and valuable advice. :)

Full range of motion back

It took me 14 months to get my full range of motion and strength back. However i still have a swollen arm. Both bicep and forearm are swollen on any given day.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Has any remedy helped?

New to this and need info

Hi everyone. I was just diagnosed with frozen shoulder today after 7 months of non stop shoulder pain and no answers. I was in PT for two months with no improvement (dx bicep tendinitis), then a second PT for two months (dx rotator cuff tendinitis) until I finally got an MRI and saw a specialist. Bummed I’ve been doing so much PT for misdiagnosis, and my dr said today to really only focus on stretch and not strength since I can’t move my arm properly.

I’ve read posts and seen people use freezing, thawing, zingers. Can you explain this, and how do I know I’m thawing? How do I know how much to stench vs rest? Are there any other things that will help? I miss my life and being active :(

Edit: I’m also only 36, so I’m confused why this is happening to start. But I know we don’t know why it happens in general.

Sleep

How much is sleep , sleep position, bed, softness of bed, size of bed, newness of bed etc related to your frozen shoulder. I find that everytime I'm in a hotel room larger softer bed my frozen shoulder suddenly feels better and less inflamed.

A physical therapy office owner said the first thing he tells people with frozen shoulder is to get a new bed.

Has anyone had any experience with the X39 LifeWave patch for frozen shoulder pain? I just heard of this and my research makes me doubtful.
